    Is yoga any cop? You always hear people raving on about it and Madona certainly bulked up on it but I don't see how it can be any good as an exercise and is it any good for weight loss?

    I busted my hand at the weekend and can't hold the weights, punch the bag or use the rowing machine.

    Well if you can't use your hand you won't be able to do a lot of yoga! To be doing it at a level where you'd be getting the benefits you're touting you'd need a hell of a lot more than a few weeks practise, by which time your hand would be healed.

    It burns calories like any activity, and ashtanga yoga makes you sweat like a lunatic, but if you actually want to lose weight it isn't a patch on traditional cardio.

    Also, Madonna isn't bulky, she's absolutely tiny but her muscles are obvious because she has hardly any bodyfat due to an alleged 2 hours of cardio per day on top of her yoga/pilates practise, and a really strict macrobiotic diet. Bodyfat is 80% diet, 20% exercise (unfortunately! :p)

    O well. I've always been fascinated by yoga but maybe that's just the women you see doing it on TV. :)

    I suppose I can just keep going with the left arm, it's allot smaller than the right anyway and it needs to catch up.

    If you want to get more bendy and relaxed then yoga is the way to go, for most other purpose there's better options, though yoga is a good complimentary thing to do besides your normal training

    Not that you're interested cos you couldn't do it with one hand - but I do advanced pilates and at the end of a 40 mins session my whole body does be in spasms and I ache for about three days - and I'm a gym bunny so it's not like I'm unfit. Gives you abs of rock - not that you can see them under the layer of fat but you can feel them!

    I have to agree here, while I have done yoga for years and enjoyed it, it is nothing compared to a good pilates class, I would also feel sore for a couple of days after a pilates class which I never felt after yoga and my abs are in better shape, after 5 c-sections I can finally do a sit up that cant be bad now can it ;)

    Brown eyed girl - do a well taught asthanga yoga class with lots of balancing poses etc and you will know all about it the next day, but then again thats not the purpose of yoga

    transform,m I do remember you talking about this before but I can't find the thread. Can you recommend a class in Dublin for astanga that is suitable for athletic people (i.e. not my granny). Ideally monday or wednesday as I'm rarely working those nights.

    I'd recommend the Wednesday ashtanga 2 class in Yoga Dublin - assuming you've done ashtanga before :)

    My friend I think Yoga isn't the best exercise as far as losing weight is concerned, unless you are seriously into Ashtanga or power yoga, but that shouldn't stop you from practicing it. Yoga is an excellent discipline, and regular practice helps maintain flexibility, improve coordination and eliminate stress.
