I have been jogging now for nearly a year 3/4 times a week.

The last few weeks I have pretty bad knee pain, hurts when walking up and down stairs especially.

now I can hardly walk, I am limping everywhere. I obviously cant jog or even go fast walking.

does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? Went to physiotherapist yesterday and he gave me some exercises to strengthen my quads.

Will I ever be able to jog again? I am missing my exercises.

Its been 2 weeks now not being able to do anything.

    Should I go doctor?

    Appreciate any advice.

    Hi aibby,

What was the diagnosis that your physiotherapist gave you? They gave you quadriceps strengthening exercises and anything else?

Its just the one knee? I injured me knee in a similar fashion (I think) and I went to an orthopedist (as I had gone to him previously for other injuries) and it probably has to do with a quad imbalance I'm no expert though. My experience is that once you have it assessed and know how to stretch it and are getting it massaged/treated(I had and imbalance from scar tissue treated by massaging) then you'll be back on track. This is of course if it is similar to what I had.

It's a condition called runners knee. Google to get more information on it. Suggested treatments are

    * Rest or Relative Rest: Run Less
    * Avoid exercises or activities that require your knees to be bent
    * Avoid running or walking downhill, downstairs or down inclines
    * Do posterior muscle stretches (hamstrings and calf muscles)
    * Do Straight Leg Lifts (Start with 3 sets of 10, work up to 10 sets of 10)
    * Check Your Feet and Shoes, overpronation often contributes to this problem
    * Consider More Stable Shoes (with better anti-pronation features)
    * Orthotics If Needed (OTC or Custom)

Got it myself when I started jogging in the mornings last month. Walking down stairs was very painful.

Transylman, I don't think you can make a diagnosis based on what the OP has said. He has seen a physio who is a professional and has given him things to work on, particularly the quads where you are suggesting posterior stretches?

Also, for all runners out there, don't asume that because somethng hurts you need more support to prevent protonations. There are suponators (I put my hand up here) out there and the worst thing I could do is get motion control shoes.

    Thanks for replies..

Physio gave me straight leg lifts to do and quad strengtening exercises to do. He also told me not to do any un-necessary walking. I still walk to and from train everyday... It is feeling a bit better but I still cant put any weight directly on the knee...

I am limping now and wish I could go out and do something...

I will look up runners knee on google too

    Thanks again
