Why doesn't An Post deliver post on Saturdays?

It's extremely annoying having to wait till the Monday for something you're expecting and might not make the Friday post.

I know in England they have it,

    Lazy bastards.

Ch'yeah... bank holidays too... what the fuh?
Feckin' long weekend there... added 3 days of needless waiting, almost doubling the overall waiting time.
They could stand to deliver at night too... pfff, cost of a stamp doesn't get you much these days :/

Isn't he the same guy that delivers all those presents down chimneys during Christmas?

Hey, you posters better be nice, or you might end up on the naughty list! No presents for you!

Happens in some smaller shops in culchieland too. They haven't started taking siestas up here yet though.

You might get better 'quality' with the correct stamp (55c ;)).

My postman barely does 5 days a week, he often skips my street one or two days in a row and I get a load of post together. B**tard's always doing it. So 5 days a week would make me happy.

And it really goes to show what a consumer driven culture we've become that we now demand shops/services be open on a Saturday/Sunday. Soon there won't anyone left to go shopping at the weekend 'cause they'll all be working.

When I was in England post was delivered approx 8am. But here its more like 1pm and thats if your lucky enough to get it, sometimes the postman doesnt come to anyone in the estate full stop. Ridiculous!

    Shouldn't you be at work?

I love the postmen, i'm trying to get them extra shifts and more money!

But somebody somewhere in your area, the postman will deliver at 8am.

I guess he can't cover everywhere at the one time!

1pm? pffffft that's nothing. For most of last year I was getting post at 3pm everyday. When we called An post to complain they told us that was perfectly normal. Only in Ireland

When I lived in England, the post service was great for the delivery times etc, but the system was rife with robbery by the employees.

I knew a guy who worked as a postie over there and he loved telling everyone stories of how they learned to recognize credit cards, birthday cards etc and used to rob them.

But they were clever enough to just take a few at a time. I think panorama aired a show about a year ago about this. Robbing gits.

He may be covering for another postman who is on sick leave. In my area, the delivery was down to one day a week for several months due to long term illness.

Mmm, I love getting post on a Saturday! Except it's rarely nice post, it's usually bills :(.

Royal Mail is great. Packages get from Cork to Edinburgh in 2 days. In fact, that's generally the longest you'd be waiting for any first class delivery within Britain too.

Yeah we found out from another postman he was doing double-shifts. But I don't think he was covering for anyone, the post was coming that late for about 10 months. We've a new guy now who comes around 11 which is much better.

I've thankfully never had any problem with post going missing but I've heard stories about them opening dvds at the sorting office and watching them.

Post in the US is pretty good, plenty of options if I need anything sent to Ireland (I wish it was better the other way around):( . My old postie was a family friend so if there were any packages, we often got them a day sooner as he would be at the sorting office and he would drop them by when visiting. :)

My dad is a postman, and I myself have delivered over a couple of christmas' and i can say for sure that no postman will skip a road just to get off early, because he knows he will get a **** load the next day.....he would have a valid reason, possibly post didnt get sorted by someone else due to illness etc etc, many reasons, but it just isnt practical for them to skip a road.

i think the OP said they were lazy bastards.....my dad is one of the hardest workers i know......many postmen deliver in the day and also sort at night, they are far from lazy.....and why should there be an obligation for postmen to work a 6 day week when most of us just do 5? just because the OP is waiting for the latest final fastasy to arrive from england?:p

what i learned while delivering the post was that alot of people blame the actual postman for mistakes, but in actual fact there is nothing himself personally can do but deliver the letters he has got on the days he works.

Post offices are open on a Saturday in NZ and you can get post too. Was just comparing my dingy hole local oifig to the efficient and appropriatley staffed NZ one today. And we're supposed to be a richer country? Pffff

Is there any way to put a stop to it?

Put a sign over your letterbox. or under, whichever you prefer.

I don't know if An Post post it, local companies pay for a leaflet drop.

My postman delivers it himself, so i guess it's An Posts doing.

And also, I never said one postman has to work 6 days a week.

The public sector should employ more, more postmen. say, 2 per region. Each one works 3 days a week or something.

    :)

Our local postman was telling us once that advertising spam like Readers Digest were the bane of his life.
He has to visit so many extra houses on his circut with these so he just bins them if that is the only letter for the house.
He can then finish around half an hours earlier.

Fair play I say unless I've realy been selected to win a Readers Digest draw:eek:

My local post office opens on a saturday.

I have no problems with the postmen/women working a 5 day week. I'm rarely waiting for post on a saturday.

An Post in general are useless tbh. Lose this, take forever to deliver that.

our postal system is a sham, like everythin else in our fcunked up nation.

    FACT.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 234 ✭✭ctc_celtic

our postal system isn't bad at all, it may come later in the day and not on weekends, but at least you'll get what you were waiting for if it was posted in Ireland.

i know of quite a lot of parcels that where sent from england and never came to Ireland because of thefts by UK postal workers (in sorting depts). the Panorama doc, mentioned earlier, said lots of sorting office employees are ex-cons.

I had a car spoiler posted from england and it never arrived, i got the postal receipt from the sender so i know it was sent. it was 5ft by 1ft, so it didn't get lost, but because it wasn't insured and 'car part' was wrote on it, it was stolen.

there was a company in england doing postal DVD rentals, they had to shut the company down cause there was so many DVD's being stolen, and it wasn't worth the extra cost to insure them.

so typical of the Irish attitude, we have the worst this and the poorest that, if you want something delivered quicker get DHL, or would that mean having to blow the dust off the wallet.

Yeah i got some today too. It was two dvd's i'd ordered but what made it even better was one of them was the wrong one but was worth €20 more than the one I was meant to get which only cost €5! Score :)

It's because An Post is stuck in Victorian times, is heavily unionised and has rigid work practices. I have a friend who works in a Post Office and the kindest word she can come up with for them is incompetent. By rights we should have a postcode system like they do in other countries but the gobsheens in An Post wouldn't be able for it all and would kick up.

PS I've got one of those postmen who only deliver mail every few days when stuff builds up as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Ste.phen

We don't NEED a postcode system, though it would be convenient I suppose.
Don't An Post have fancy ass computers that can sort mail addressed to pretty much anywhere, without needing a postcode at all?
The problem we have in Ireland is people call the same place by 5 or 6 different names.

The post I got had nothing to do with the election, thank God.

I thought maybe it was because there had been a bank holiday in the week.
