i think im addicted to poker!!!!
when i first started off going to casinos and such i was playing poker a lot, as in 4 nights a week for around 7 hours, i still think that is a lot... but i always actually had control of it, if i didnt want to play, i wouldnt, i took 3 months off of it last summer even, but now....
now is different, i have played poker for the last 7 days straight, have a sleeping pattern which is so messed up, wake up at 4, doss around mostly, head out some nights or just relax at home, go to internet cafe and play poker at either 2/4 am and play for 5 hours minimum,
this totally wrecks with my sleeping pattern and my life in general, i havent talked to a lot of my friends in the last month, they have slowly but surely been phased out of my life, i basically have 2 poker friends that i talked to regularly, and 4 other friends, thats it, its kinda messed up....
and tonight is the worst example!!! i was sitting at home watching some crap movies, basically wasting time so i could get to sleep instead of playing tonight, but oh no, i lasted until around 5 and then i had to!! had to!!!
im pretty sure im trying to prove to myself that i can play good again, and im not going to give up until i do, but it still shows im addicted, and my question to all of ye

is there much harm of being addicted to poker at the age of 20?
i know its a weird question but one i'd love to hear the answer of...
at my age, i know im gambling a lot, and im probably going to go bust if i keep it up... but i think that if i dont learn the lesson down the line im still going to do the same, but i'll have people to support then, thats why im thinking that its not too bad a thing, im after leaving college, partly due to poker, other part is because its crap and i hate it....
so i basically have either the choice of going out and getting pissed, or playing poker, and im choosing both, is there really much harm in that?
apart from the playing poker drunk part

What are you going to do when you lose your bankroll? You have 30K or so, I think (from one of the other threads). At 5/10 I'd say that will be gone within the month.

As far as I can see, you ran extremely well early in your poker life and built a big roll playing live. But the fact is that the majority of live players around the country wouldn't survive past 1/2 online (and most wouldn't even beat 1/2). They don't understand the basics, and from reading your other threads, neither do you (no offence intended, but that's the way it looks).

Anyway, sort yourself out now, while you still have your poker winnings to give yourself some options. If (when) you lose that, you'll be a hell of a lot worse off than you are now.

Doughie, i promised the good folk here i wouldnt post low content crap anymore but I gotta reply to you. NO ADDICTION IS GOOD, if you feel addicted to something you really need help, go to GA, get back into college and hold onto your money. The danger in receving 'easy money' so early in life is that you lose 'respect' for it. Once you lose this respect you are on a downward spiral to brokesville. I think there in a mini epidemc with young lads these days blowing a fortune and shrugging their shoulders, then planning to shrug and lose more in the future, they live to play, the problem with this is when they have no bankrolll left, what do they live for then?....I suspect the impact of this to be seen futher down the road in this country and elsewhere...health ->physical and mental issues

as someone said get some help,( oh yeah I said it) for every success story there are many more
failures.....I'm off now to kick ass/shins in a soccer game, then some new elixir strings for the axe..(it's the little things :)

Everton 1 United 4 (well Ive a tenner on this:) )

the fact that you see poker as gambling means you should quit.

its obvious from some of your threads that you must have been running extremely well to build up your bankroll. so quit while your ahead, because playing 5/10 im 100% you will go busto.

if you insist on playing, then i recommend you pick up a few poker books and give yourself some sort of an edge.

For standard 1/2 Live = .25/.50 On-Line (where you made a large % of your BR AFAIK). If you keep playing 3/6 and above you will go broke. Guaranteed. Take out 25k (assuming you still have the 30k BR) and drop down to 1/2 with your 5k.

I remember reading in your other thread you are trying to get back your "Form" from earlier in the year. Here's the sad truth, you were just running savagely hot and got lucky. You can't regain this form without getting Lucky again, and now you are a marked account because of your posts on here, (if I played 5/10, I'd sit down at any table you were at) so you will be broke very soon.

Seriously man this is not funny, thought it was a piss take for a while but it is obv not.
Why not set your self a challenge to to beat 1-2 over 100,000 hands or something because that is a s**t load of money and you have been told by some players that have been beating 2-4 3-6 5-10 for a long time that u are not good enought to beat these levels and hey if you are right and you can beat these levels then 1-2 should be no problem to you.

Plus i believe you have said you have been running extremely hot and that has got to change so it would be +ev to move down when varience runs its course.
and if you are wrong and you cant beat thoes levels then you will have saved yourself alot of money.

    Ps excellent post solksjaer

Hey, i think the original post in this thread raises an important issue.Understandably replies have focused on bankroll management, game selection and general playing ability but are these issues really related to addiction? What does winning or losing have to do with addiction? If someone is a big winner in the long term this does not mean that they might not be any less addicted to poker than a losing player?Obviously the question of addiction is raised far more frequently with regard to losing players and with some justification, addiction and bad poker often go hand in hand, but is it not fair to say that a winning player can be addicted? So imagine a scenario where a player is winning, he or she is not married, has no kids, no other responsiblities, that person would most likely never be deemed an 'addict' even though they might have the same mental dependence on playing that a broke degenerate might have.I know from personal experience that i only stop to question myself if I have lost what would be alot of money to me but never if I have won.My own opinion is that addiction should not be defined in financial terms but in terms of how poker takes over other parts of your life and effects your relationships with other people.

when i first started off going to casinos and such i was playing poker a lot, as in 4 nights a week for around 7 hours, i still think that is a lot... but i always actually had control of it, if i didnt want to play, i wouldnt, i took 3 months off of it last summer even, but now....
now is different, i have played poker for the last 7 days straight, have a sleeping pattern which is so messed up, wake up at 4, doss around mostly, head out some nights or just relax at home, go to internet cafe and play poker at either 2/4 am and play for 5 hours minimum,
this totally wrecks with my sleeping pattern and my life in general, i havent talked to a lot of my friends in the last month, they have slowly but surely been phased out of my life, i basically have 2 poker friends that i talked to regularly, and 4 other friends, thats it, its kinda messed up....
and tonight is the worst example!!! i was sitting at home watching some crap movies, basically wasting time so i could get to sleep instead of playing tonight, but oh no, i lasted until around 5 and then i had to!! had to!!!
im pretty sure im trying to prove to myself that i can play good again, and im not going to give up until i do, but it still shows im addicted, and my question to all of ye

is there much harm of being addicted to poker at the age of 20?
i know its a weird question but one i'd love to hear the answer of...
at my age, i know im gambling a lot, and im probably going to go bust if i keep it up... but i think that if i dont learn the lesson down the line im still going to do the same, but i'll have people to support then, thats why im thinking that its not too bad a thing, im after leaving college, partly due to poker, other part is because its crap and i hate it....
so i basically have either the choice of going out and getting pissed, or playing poker, and im choosing both, is there really much harm in that?
apart from the playing poker drunk part

get a gf lol :) ... and go to GA. no harm.

Think longterm future prospects which are ground solid. College and your career for the future is more important than trying to make it poker. You just answered your question yourself here, and the above says it all really. If you really do have 20k in the bank take it out, buy yourself a car / go on a holiday / pay next months rent or whatever. Its obvious your not entirely happy playing poker 24/7 and its getting on your tits. So go do something about it before you lose decipline and tilt it all away.

I'd give up on this post folks. He said in his OP he had already left college and he says today he told them he was not sitting his exams. It's probably just me but In my day when you left college they couldn't test you anymore.
I dunno maybe these days they hound you for years afterwards to keep you in practice. Not so fast there mr Clynes, before you drink the pint I want you to write a short piece on crop rotation in the 15 century..(stolen from the young ones)
