Picked up a few bottles of this Polish beer recently. It weighs in at around 5.6% but for a strong beer hasnt avery heavy taste to it. Very refreshing I have to say, certainly a lot nicer than the usual fare of lagers out there.

Yeah its nicer than Zywiec alright, try Lech, very nice beer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

Yeah as a lager I quite like it.
Wouldn't really class a 5.6%er as a strong beer though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,114 ✭✭✭noby

    Strong session beer though, surely?
I like it too. Easy going summer lager. Haven't tried Lech, must give it a go. Is it Polish too?

I'd rate Zywiec a bit over Tyskie, but there isn't much between them. I wouldn't put Lech far over Carlsberg though.

I like Tyskie, and it's on sale on many pubs around Dublin now. Very nice lager.

Not a patch on them NZ beers though Ronan eh?;)

    MMMM...Monteith's.

oh monteiths! I went on their brewery tour and they had a special beer there which was really nice and hoppy, some novice brewer had produced it and then left and taken the recipe to the parent company. they had a couple of kegs of this stuff and it was devine. I stayed there a long time drinking that and talking to the staff....MMMMmmmm

Depends on the session I suppose :)

Theres an amazing strong polish beer called Warka Strong(pronounced Varka) its nearly 8% and has a very subtle toffee-like flavour, its very very nice. But my god what a hangover. Not sure if its out yet here, also try Zubrowka vodka with apple juice :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Warka Strong is nice, as is Tyskie, but as herself's Polish, she's managed to get me hooked on Okocim Mocne (Oh-ko-chim Mosh-neh), it's almost 8%, and very smooth indeed.

Ah jez it's nearly all been said eh? Yeah, Tyskie is rockin, though nowadays I prefer Lech (though that might be down to visiting Poznan where it's brewed..lovely Polish city I'd recommend). I think Lech has a bit of a tighter taste, a bit fresher without losing the flavour. Afaik Lech, Tyskie and possibly Zwiec (sp?) are all owned by the same monster beer company.

I was just about to mention the Okcim Mocne, it's frickin' rocket fuel and it goes down a bit too easily (you think you've only had 6, but it's more like 12 regular beers!). Eep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭happy_acid_face

Tyskie is a great beer, but i do prefer Zywiec. Lech is nice too but i wouldn't rate it as high as the two prior. As with the Okocim brand it is definatly one of the more popular beers with the Polish customers we get in. I prefer it's standard beer over it's mochne and would probably rate the russian Baltika 9 (Try it! One of my many favourite beers) over it too. Another beer to try would be Svyturys Ekstra, its draught in particular. Lovely Lithuanian beer. Above all of all of the above beers though, bar maybe the Baltika 9 which ties this, would be Saku Kuld. Its an absolutely fantastic beer which i would encourage anyone to try! The Saku range is from Estonia

Love Tyskie and Lech (if you can find it, try the black label stuff - hard hitting at around 7%, but beautiful taste), though I'd rate Zywiec below them myself.

Lech and Tyskie are both owned by Kompania Piwowarska, and Zywiec is Heineken owned, IIRC.

i love tyskie, i havent had it in ages, the last time i brought it somewhere everyone referred to it as cheap polish piss without having any, even though they were drinking the uber classy rolling rock or bud.

Does anybody else find that when you're drinking certain beers people are always willing to slag you are ask why the hell are you drinking that stuff, whenever i get erdinger people always say things like " you're only drinking that because it has a cool glass"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Ignore the idiots is what I say. Drank to much Lech last night anyway is all I know!

I do heart the Tyskie myself. I haven't tried Zywiec though, must keep an eye out for it.

When I get bottles of erdinger I get a half pint glass. The only thing I like about the glass on draught is that you get a full pint or more most times. When people say stuff like that I usually point out that Erdinger is also very cheap compared to other beers, when the alcohol content is taken into account. What amnoys me most is every bastard wants to taste it and thinks it is their god given right to put their greasy mouth on my glass and ruin the head. Buy your own you kunts!

The pub beside the cinema in dun laoghaire have lech on draught.

Tyskie is pretty good, probably the best polish beer I've tasted so far. I was told to stay away from lech by a polish friend, he's never steered me wrong! Has anyone tried Lithuanian beers, or other East european beers in general? (to expand the orginial topic)

Švyturys is fantastic stuff. Had in it in Vilnius last year and have noticed quite a few off-licences selling it here since.

Do note however, I'm talking about their lager and not their stout. :D

I love Tyskie myself and drink it regularly.

As regards the second part, yes. I drink San Miguel, I love the stuff too and the offie at Northside S.C. sells it for €9- for ten bottles. I get people slag it off all the time, until they sup from it.

I'm prone to an odd Tyskie myself.

The odd person might pick up on me drinking something different like...... Desperados; "wtf are you drinking that for". Most of them know my form and my willingness to try anything (not impling that Desperados is off the scale of normality, it's just what popped into my head :) )

There's a fairly cool Polish bar just off O’Connell Street that sells most of these beers mentioned along with the draught versions. It is in a fairly shady area though.

'Just off O'Connell Street' is pretty vague.

Is it East or West, Liffey end or Parnell Street end?

    It's like to investigate.

seansouth: that place is called zagloba or something very similar, its just up from the back gate on parnell st. its a grand area

If you think the Okochim Mocne (Motz nee) is rocket fuel try the Okochim Porter. 9% acquired taste, but once you've acquired it all others seem bland!:D

Posted this post last night but it seems to be gone...

Is it the Russian Bar at the top of Cathal Brugh Street you're thinking of? Or is it Pravda at the Ha' Penny Bridge?

Went and bought some after you reminded me of my drunken Spanish holidays. Enjoyed 2 bottles last night. I'd drink it again.

    I would

    4% to 5% average

    5% to 6% -strong

    Over 6% -very strong

The vast majority of beers on sale in ireland are below 5%

    9% - 12% Very Strong
    12+% Very, Very Strong :)

Don't know of too many beers above 12% that are freely available though.

not a huge amount but there's a few alright... Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock would be one at 12% and Samiclaus beer would be another at 14%

Also alot of Belgian Trappist beers sit in around the Strong to Very Strong range.

I work to the Norn Iron scale of beer strength, which goes:

    <5%: Wake
    5 - 6%: Daycent
    6.1 - 9.9%: Paarfil
    10%+: Quare

Ok ok but doesn't alter the fact that 90% of beers sold in the ROI are 5% or under.

4.1% ..4.3% is what you normally get.

90% of beer by volume, perhaps. But "90% of beers" -- I doubt it.

I'll name nine over 5% for every one you can name under (he said foolishly).
And if I can't, I bet Happy Acid Face can...

    5% or under

    Heineken
    Guinness
    Kaiserdom
    Miller
    Bud
    Pradsky
    Coors
    Dutch Gold
    Orangjieboom
    Royal Dutch.

By the way I meant 90% of beers sold by volume are 5% or under

    labbatts Ice
    Fosters
    LCL Pils
    Carling
    Rolling rock
    Red Stripe
    Becks Vier
    carlsberg
    Tennants
    galahad
    Karlsbrau
    St etienne
    Germania
    Peroni
    Amstel
    Amsterdam
    Hollandia

Theres a few more to be going on with
