One of the Admins (I am not saying which one) sleeps with the servers every night,he tends to get a Boner around 3am.I will let your imagination fill in the gaps, but by 03:40 he is having a smoke.

it cant possibly be necessary to restart/turn off/maintain the servers every singlie night at 3am....this is something i have wondered about before

It is only 35min or so of down time. The DB is backed up each night. Better than losing loads of data if something happens.

i think late at night the longer and more annoying your signature is the slower the site loads, something to do with the vbulletins members who need to compensate for small you know what signature priority routine

Yes, we get paid alright, but you have to make sure they see ya doing the mod work.

stop messing everyone  for gods sake

    OP....

boards works fine 24x7 for all of us, if you ever notice that its slow, stops working or search doesn't work properly, maybe you need a new pcmcia user interface in your pcs loading bay, ask in the computers and technology section

It's true. Brought in back in 2005 when 22% of boards was bought out by Google and associated investment bankers. This was on the back of a Jelsoft Enterprises purchase of 25% of the company back in 2000. Vexorg handles the accounts. Mod salaries are indexed at just below the rate of inflation.

Based on modcp and modutils activity, I think you'll find Gordon and myself are the top bonus earners for most banned users.
Soon I'll have made enough for early retirement.

Do you not see a problem with allowing access to the DB while backing it up?

    I can see several.

can they not just run a mirror????

its only 2 hours in the middle of the night so its no big deal just dosnt seem like the most efficient way but i dont really know what im talking about

It's actually only about half an hour, and it's in the middle of the night when demand is at its lowest. Regular users all know it'll be down for a bit from 3am, which gives us a nice 30 minute window to improve our internet pr0n collection.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭scojones

It's half an hour when the demand is the lowest. The cost and effort required to run a mirror during that period is not feasable IMO.

    PeakOutput wrote:

    True

What will this mirror operate on exactly? When is the mirror created and backed up. How much extra cost is involved in maintaining a mirror, how much hardware and cpu time is required to synchronise the Mirrors. You tend to only get absolutely independent mirrors when you're dealing with critical systems that can't afford any down time. That isn't boards. Also since when is it two hours?

Don't do it. The engines can't take it captain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,083 ✭✭✭✭Stark

3:05am - 3:40am is the only time the Smods get to sleep. When the Smods get a bit of sleep, they tend to hand out less random bannings. Less chance of a random banning means more time that you can spend posting. So you see, you're getting more boards.ie not less thanks to the nightly downtime.

Databases don't need to be taken offline for backups to be made of them. You're using the wrong backup software if it does.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,351 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Now do you hear that regi, you've been using the wrong software all along. You call yourself an IT professional? :D
