Are there any other women out there in their late 30's who've been skinny more or less all their lives but the fat is creeping on (especially tummy!)... have tried Curves but want to try something on my own, e.g. using my nieces' skipping rope - skipping is supposed to work wonders. My attendance at Curves is woeful at the moment (got sidetracked by searching for a new car) so am not too fit. Skipping for 2 minutes leaves me out of puff - which I suppose shows that it's raising my pulse rate and that's good! but I can do it in the privacy of my back garden without making a show of myself!

Has anyone got quick results from skipping?

It's supposed to be an effective all round workout ...

As you get older the average sedentary person is losing muscle every year and your metabolism slows down a lot. You need less energy to survive day by day so if you are still eating the same as you did when you were 20 then it is going to go on as fat, as it is surplus calories.

By lifting heavy weights you can redevelop your lost muscles and so get back the metabolism you had in your 20's and eat the same.

Get into a gym and establish a proper program and read stickies

I don't rate curves much. Find an exercise you love and work hard at it. My definition of a useful exercise/activity is one where you sweat. unless you're sweating by the end of it, don't expect many results...

Could be wrong-only a novice-but thats my criteria.

Having started the exercise buzz only recently I'd recommend running. Fantastic activity, brilliant for head calming, it'll re-shape your whole body (in a great way)-my butts lifted about three inches (and I actually have one now).

Get a decent pair of runners ( http://www.amphibianking.ie ) , find a race for a goal and get going!
