The wireless route

Just wondering if anyone uses a wireless solution for VoIP?

My understanding is that if you have a WIFI modem/router with your internet connection you just need to get a WIFI VoIP phone (and a service provider subscription) and away you go - no ATAs or further routing required. Is this right?

If anyone has this setup, or knows about it I'd be interested in hearing
      how well it works?
where did you get your phone/how much was it?
is there any security issues with calling on the WIFI network?

    Thanks,
    Daire

It depends on what you want it for - if you want to use the phone from multiple locations it can be time consuming configuring it for different wifi hotspots (unless you get a subscription from one SP with lots of hotspots)

If its for around the home a better option might be something like the siemens C450 gigaset. Its a standard cordless phone but the base station connects to both your landline and a VoIP provider. its easy to setup and it rings if either phone number is dialled and you automatically select the VoIP service provider for outbound calls.

i found this a cheaper alternative and much more reliable than a number of Wifi phones (I've tried a very expensive Siemens, Zyxel and UTStarcom F1) all have poor battery life.

They also can be unreliable in moving from one wifi service to the next i.e. if you have a home profile and an eircom profile when you leave home go to an eircom zone and select the profile it takes a bit of Jiggery pockery to get it working -maybe the firmware has moved on in the last 9 months?

    that's my $0.02
