The major youth villian of the 1920s was probably jazz music.

From the Wikipedia article - "Most of the victims were children in second to sixth grades". That's 7-12 year olds. And nearly three times as many dead. I don't think you can claim Dunblane was worse.

I can't believe anyone is here arguing over what tragedy/massacre is worse than another, get a fúcking grip.

Is there a need to categorise it and quantify its terribleness with an equation based on the death count and age of those involved

    Lorax wrote:

Try explaining this to the loved ones of the victims. 'oh well as bad it was, but there have been worse' and 'Oh, it has happened to primary school children, you son/daughter/brother/sister was 18-20 etc, so it is not quite as bad'.

    Edit: *thread dies, hopefully.

There was apparently much gnashing of teeth amongst those who argue such things when no video games, not even Half-Life, were found in Cho's domicile.

That was one of the things about Virginia Tech that creeped me out the most. The media decided that the caption for the whole incident would be "Worst shooting incident in U.S. History".

    1. What does it matter if it's the worst, or the "best bad" shooting? People are dead.
    2. Can a country not see how f*cked up it is, when you can classify your shootings into "worst, bad, not so bad...."?

I laughed at that, sick as it was. I've been doomed to hell for years anyway, so it makes no difference at this stage.

How is boards.ie condoning the massacres?! Have you seen any messages from DeV or anything from the site itself to say that it publicly supports these brutal killings? No.

A small handful of users have commented comparing it to similar incidents and one or two have used the same kind of humour they would use for most news items that crop here. If I make a joke about the Iraq War, it dosen't mean I support, condone and encourage the Iraq War, its still a serious issue but we could tiptoe around on eggshells forever if thats what you'd prefer.

I hear Cho was seen surfing boards.ie in the run up to the massacre.
All of the admins' posts were actually coded messages to Cho. Messages that were beamed into the admins' brains by the government. A government ran by aliens. Aliens controlled by big tobacco. This goes all the way to the top...

I suppose some kind of formula could be applied
(Number of students killed) / (Average age of students) = Degree of brutality

    Virginia Tech - 33 / 21 = 1.57142
    Dunblane - 16 / 6 = 2.66666

    So clearly Dunblane was worse.

If a load of pensioners are killed, no1 gives a crap - they have lived their life and were going to die soon anyway. These kids had their whole lives ahead of them and never got a chance to live.

Large scale loss of life is nearly always categorized to quantify
its terribleness based on death count.

    Holocaust
    Genocide
    ethnic cleansing
    slaughter
    massacre

    and so on.

It doesn't mean that people think that the grief felt by their loved ones is any less because of the category its placed in.

As for age, people grieve for the loss of any loved one but in my experience
the loss of the very young cuts deeper and has a more lasting effect
    on the families involved.

Over 300 Native Americans were killed at the massacre at Wounded Knee, most of the women, children and elderly people... no matter where or how it happens we should always think of those who are left behind and maybe even some day we might actually learn the lessons.

    Rant over.

Obviously this is a tragedy and there cannot genuinely be a scale on which we can judge such things.

However it is perfectly reasonably to point out inconsistencies in response imho. In the same week this happened hundreds of kids were gunned down in a bloody massacre in Darfur. I'm not surprised you didnt hear about it, it was barely reported.

The fact is that noone gives a sh*t about those kids. They arent here, they arent us and it wasnt today. But primaraily they arent rich and they *were* black.

Genuinely I doubt anyone here particularly gives a sh*t about Viginia Tech. We are aghast, intrigued, revolted and perhaps curious to see that spectacle but tomorrow will be another day and absolutely noone here will lift one finger to stop this from repeating. Which it will.

Pretending otherwise is hypocritical bollox, as are the shrieking objectionists on their high horses around these parts.

Were you (noone particular) campaigning for gun control before this? No, most likely you cared as little about it as the rest of us.

Tomorrow is another day. Society is numb.

I didn't hear about this. Am a bit numb to Darfur stories I'll admit but do watch out for them. Nothing coming up after a web search. Do you have a link?

People in the Western World always give more attention to atrocities that happen in the Western World. In the same way people in Darfur didn't give any attention to what happened in Virginia Tech.

I linked it in the first thread on the VT shooting. I dont have it around (found it on google news). Personally I think Darfur is a disgrace but I'm not hypocritical about it enough to pretend like I care a whole lot. I have a pretty dark world vision of where we are going. I dont give this planet more then 50 years, 100 tops, before something massively cataclysmic happens.

Cataclysmic seems to imply massive and quick. If only we'd be so fortunate. I agree that the world will be in a wretched state a century from now ... but it will be a slow, painful, decaying, and depraved decline. Ergo a descent into general madness. ... maybe it's already started? Think of the world in the film Children of Men. But who gives a fig right? We won't be here.

Now pardon me while I go watch Donnie Darko for the 352nd time and fritter away some crisps.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

I define Cataclysmic as "2/3rd of the humans on earth not being , um, human any more".

Be is Nukes, Manmade Virusus (my personal pick), Asteroids, Global Warming, War, Disease.. whatever. it may be fast or slow , it may be painful or not. i dunno. I DO know that the "world system" is osscillating out of any chance of returning to equilibrium and systems that do that wreck themselves.

Now I just sound like a mad person. I hope I've made my basic point clear :)

    DeV.

ps: If you wonder if I really believe this... I don't have kids because I wouldnt wish it on them.

You're right. Latest reports from Darfur are that the locals were shocked to hear about the VT shootings, which Janjaweed militia informed them of as they were taking aim.
