Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn is available for download: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Just installed this, my verdict is it's a lot faster, the enhanced nVidia Drivers are interesting; enable desktop effects and get "wobbly windows", workspaces on a 3D cube and nice "fade in" menus and windows. While fun at first, they reduced my resolution and slowed down my display, other issues were window restore down/maximise and close problems. So I've removed them, but there's no doubt these will be good with a bit of development work.

There's easy package install of restricted codecs, drivers and Flash /Java. Although Real Player seems to have been excluded. Also package install for NTFS-3g for NTFS read/write support. I think altogether it's worth upgrading to .

Finally a distro that supports WPA out of the box - no more fiddling about with wpasupplicant :) The wobbly windows and stuff are just part of Beryl.

Automatix is ready for Feisty too, and it can be used to easily install RealPlayer and the likes.

The only piece of hardware on my laptop that is not presently working with Feisty is its built in TI card reader. The Synaptics touchpad is behaving a bit funny too but nothing majorly bad :)

Just installed it. Worked like a charm, took about ten minutes to install as well. Just importing my fluxbox settings from my old laptop now. I had to set up support for my ATI Radeon 1300, and also (safe) ntfs write support by doing the following:
    sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)
    sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
    sudo depmod -a
    sudo aticonfig --initial
    sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
    sudo reboot
That was the ATI driver sorted. Then for ntfs write support:
    sudo apt-get install ntfs-config
    sudo apt-get install ntfs-3g
    gksu ntfs-config
When the GUI comes up just tick the two boxes and click OK. Then do:
    sudo mount -a
If it gives out about the device being busy when you have ticked the two boxes and clicked OK, just umount the ntfs drive before running gtksu ntfs-config. Then run sudo mount -a again.

I hope this helps some people!

I'm in the middle of updating now (through Synaptic, easy!)

My rt61 based card is barely working through 6.10 so hopefully this should make it a little smoother.

mine works perfectly now, i did a clean install - thing is network manager still has one or two issues so you cant just click on the network, i had to go in an manually configure it, which took all of 10 seconds and no messing around with a console.

I moved from Ubuntu to Windows XP again because I wanted to play games again then got sick of the games and now I'm left with an OS that crashes, honestly, for NO REASON. I could be typing this and I'll get a blue screen, Ubuntu never crashed, the only thing that pissed me off about Ubuntu was the lack of drivers and the god damn awkwardness of installing things, which is what I missed about Windows.

I might go back, does anyone know if Ubuntu has improved drivers for Intel Graphics Chipsets? Usually when I install Ubuntu I have to spend about and hour installing and searching for walkthroughs to install graphics drivers then change resolution (such a pain in the arse).

Installed Feisty beta and had some troubles with the widescreen on my laptop but it's been working grand since. As for games, WINE emulates Directx reasonably well

Upgraded to Feisty a couple of days ago - completely seamless and painless. No problems with Intel chipset, widescreen, bluetooth, wireless... everything's just lovely. Feels brisker somehow, but I can't put my finger on what, exactly, is quicker.

    Ah deadly I love ubuntu

Hmmmm... I upgraded, everything seemed to go okay, everything apart from Beryl.

I uninstalled the Nvidia driver that came with Feisty (a nice surprise, but didn't seem to work that well) and installed the newest one from Nvidia, seems to be working a little better, but Beryl is still giving me hassel... will probably just reinstall it.

The wireless card working out the box was nice though.

Yeah, I think I'll install it again, I loved using it but my sister and mother are too stupid to adjust or even try and figure out how to work it, they can use the ****ty XP and I'll use Ubuntu :D.

Can ubuntu be run on Apple Macbook pro....i've had trouble installing (even trying to run the livedisc is a problem) an i've read elsewhere its not that easy

Can i use another unix ditro that will be easier? I thought ubuntu tended to be the most user friendly for a nooby

WOW. Just got Ubuntu 7.10 working perfect now (after spending about 30 minutes trying to figure out why it wasn't auto detecting my chipset as an Intel one, then having to do all the dpkg-reconfigure malarkey) and I have to say it is running so much faster! I have the visual effects turned on and it runs and looks so much better than Beryl did!

    I am happy :D

Can you Get it As a Live cd?

But of course. The Desktop edition is the LiveCD.

Updated last nite from Dapper , took about 45 minutes and worked perfectly , the new nvidia driver has better colour correction , and Firefox no longer stalls between pages like it used too , its as fast as windows now , Got the new automatix straight after and it now includes Crossover office !!

Has anyone got any experience with that ? Does it work ?

Edit : Scratch that last question , by all accounts its rubbish and not worth the money !

you got any link for the 'dpkg-reconfigure malarkey'?? had the same problem with 6.10, trying to detect Intel graphics Chipset on laptop & soundcard, gave up after a few frustrating hours. thanks.

If you type in terminal "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" you should be presented with a blue screen type thingy, on the first option just select the i8-- (don't know the other numbers so just used --) type graphics (normal is vesa) then just select ok for the rest, that should do it.

    Also, check out this thread.

Works perfectly on a Dell 6000 Inspiron, 1st downloaded iso was faulty, thanks to a friend, a 2nd installation cd worked perfectly, WPA was a breeze, XP dual boot available but Ubuntu is mostly used

Did an over-night download/upgrade, running perfectly on an IBM Thinkpad.

    Love the wobbly windows!

How do you upgrade through Synaptics? I'm new to Ubuntu but I've been running 6.6 for a while. I downloaded the 7.4 iso twice but neither works properly so I thought I'd try the upgrade.

It depends on the Macbook Pro - there are slight differences in hardware in the different sizes and versions. I installed Ubunty Edgy (the previous release) on my basic 15" Macbook Pro and it was not well supported at the time (about 3 months ago). With a bit of fiddling the sound worked, but when headphones were plugged in, sound continued to come through the speaker. Unlike other Macbooks, the airport wireless was not supported by the madwifi driver at the time - this might have been fixed since, but it was disappointing. iirc, I installed ndiswrapper but had problems with that too. Other features, such as keyboard backlight, and adjusting the brightness of your screen, etc., are supported by installing some extras.

Ubuntu is newbie friendly, but installing it on a Macbook Pro might be an unnecessary headache unless you have some time to spare. You probably won't find it easier in another Linux distro. Don't know about the live cd install, but I wouldn't necessarily blame the macbook for that, since Ubuntu's live cd installer is dodgy enough and will give problems on lots of different systems. Having said that, I did install Edgy from live cd without any issues (except for one non-fatal error)

Hmm, I seem to have a bug with the desktop effects thing, won't make the cube thing, even though I've selected it, and only has one workspace, wierd. I might just install Beryl.

just upgraded there and I must say that the first thing I noticed is that it does run that little more snappier than 6.10. The integrated restricted driver manager and desktop effects are nice although my Dell doesn't need any restricted drivers. I was hoping somebody could help me out with a problem though, if I enable the desktop effects then I am not able to view any movie using Totem, which is pretty annoying. I got around this by creating a Beryl session for 6.10 and logging into that if I wanted to play with the desktop effects, now that it is integrated into the default install I thought they might have fixed this one problemo. Anyone have any ideas on this? I'm running on some Intel integrated graphics btw

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭So Glad

I never noticed any problem like that, although I had problems last night with the codecs and just downloaded the w32codecs (check in Synaptic) and got Mplayer instead of the Movie Player (Totem I think) and it's working fine.

Hesitating about upgrading from Edgy as it will inevitably mean more fiddling and I'm not sure there's anything in Feisty that I want or need. I certainly have no use for wobbly windows, but if it really is faster then it's worth a go.
Question is, is it really faster?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭So Glad

It's a lot snappier, and more responsive, a lot less unexpected bugs.

Not sure Whether to bother upgrading. I had a lot of problems getting edgy up and running, when I installed it a while back. It got some very simple things wrong like messing up the menu.lst file and requiring me to edit grub at the command line to get the damn thing to boot.

After finally getting a (somewhat) stable system, I'm not sure I want to go through all that again.

I've also never been able to get ubuntu to upgrade successfully. Usually end up reinstalling. Plus the new pclinuxos is due out soon and I'm thinking of switching back to it.

I upgraded both my desktop and laptop to Feisty with no problems. Just one click and wait a couple of hours. Neither required any extra fiddling.
if I enable the desktop effects then I am not able to view any movie using Totem, which is pretty annoying.
I get the same on my Dell with Intel Extreme graphics. Movies just show up as a black screen with sound playing and I have to quit Beryl to watch them properly.

On my laptop with ATI card I had to change from the restricted driver to the open source one to get the shiny effects. Only problem I've noticed so far is that Blender won't work properly with Beryl/Compiz running.

I upgraded to it easily enough, but I didn't know about the wobbly windows, had to enable them (how does one find out what big feature changes were made?)

Still new to Linux and I have to sort out the following:
-Dell printer (J740) won't work in XP or Ubuntu, I'd like to get it working in at least one OS!
-Sometimes the gnome-panel process freezes on startup and I have to end it, but once it restarts it works
-Shutdown works but restart leaves my PC hanging, as I understand it, it's an ACPI problem that lots of people have.

Did the upgrade yesterday. Went better than I thought it would but still not flawlessly.
It stopped halfway through producing an error when upgrading the samba package. I had to kill the upgrade and do a dpg -reconfigure. then install samba at the end.

I seem to be having some trouble with networking. Only noticed it this morning after booting. Sometimes on system start the networking wasn't configured properly. Sometimes it works on a boot but then stops working about an hour later (when it probably tries to do a dhcp renew). Still not sure what the exact problem is. Once the connection goes, I cannot get it back up (using dhclient or ifconfig) and have to reboot. I seem to have a correct ip address and the results of route seem fine.
It could be DNS settings getting lost just not sure.

I unistalled the network manager package and set my system up with a static ip address a few minutes ago so I'll see how that goes.

You can only directly upgrade to Ubuntu 7.04 ("Feisty Fawn") from Ubuntu 6.10 ("Edgy Eft") For information on the upgrade options: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
