I haven't used that particular machine but any one I ever have has been km.

    Who doesn't use metric?

A lot of machines can be set to either miles or km. A brisk* walk for most people is approx 4 mph or 6.5 kph if that helps. Alternatively if it's in a gym just ask the staff.

*a proper walk, not a power walk and not a donder something in between.
edit: d'oh dave already said the first bit.

If its possible to reach whatever is 12 on it then I'm pretty sure its probably kilometres.

When I went to have a look at the westwood gym I asked the gym attendent what the max speed on the treadmill was. I'm small and round so look nothing like your typical runner so he was bemused to say the least. It was a perfectly noram question though as some of them only go to 12 kph which is no good for speedwork.
