    Why - what happened ?

The general vibe I see from the early reviews is that it suffers from too-many-villians syndrome.

Im hearing mixed things about this, so i take it that it was as bad as number 2? (which sucked like a hungry new born baby!)

I generally don't fall for massive blockbusters, but I thought Spiderman 2 kicked all sorts of ass. With the obvious exception of Batman Begins (which has a hugely different tone), it would be my favourite superhero comic book adapation. I havent come across any reviews myself - only the AICN ones which are not reliable at all. But I will be at Cineworld bright and early on Friday the 4th.

i hated the second one immensely but not everyone did i guess. But yes batman begins was top class

    First one was so so.
Second one was corny childish rubbish.
It was almost a remake of the first one.
The third one doesnt look any better and the trailer seems to give the whole plot away.
The 90's cartoon series was superb though.

As was the 90's Batman cartoon :)

Actually the Spiderman 3 trailer was just on now on Sky One and yea, it DOES seem to give the whole plotline away.

Yes those 3 cartoon series were brilliant.
Far superior to the dumbed down films .

aye.....the animated batman movie[mask of the phamtesm] is the best comic book movie imo

RedTom - you going to tell us what was so bad?

Also suprised at the negativity toward 2 - It's almost universally considered the stronger of the two. I can't underdstand anyone who liked the first dismissing the second.

The second film was like a remake of the first one.
Far too many similarities and it was unoriginal and cliched.
Plus Dr Octavius was a joke in it ,he was embarrassing.
Hopefully the third one will bring some credence to the series.

Spider-man 2 was one of the best reviewed films of 2004:

    Just throwing that out there.

I liked Spiderman a lot, and thought 2 was better. Hopefully 3 will be better still. Been waiting for venom since before the first one came out.

i heard there was a dance number in this one (disco stu reference?) to show peter parker's turn to the darkside. now at first i thought this sounded ridiculous but maybe with sam directing it and tobey's nerdish likeability(sp?) swinging it, they could pull it off...
i wasnt too hyped by the 5min footage they released awhile back of peter being attacked by harry/goblin. but still cant wait to see this. hope its not overloaded with villains...
im in china so ill get to see it on the 4th May!

I can't wait to see SM3. There seems to b e an wful lot of negativity in this thread, with people saying the 2nd film sucked despite it being one of the best reveiwd films of 04 aswell as winning an Oscar in 05.

This film has an awful lot of hype to live up to which may be it's downfall. I'm still going to be at Cineworld on the 4th to catch it though. Venom was my favorite character from the cartoon series so to see him and Spidey going at it can't be half bad, can it?

I thought the second one was a lot better then the first, i didn't really like the first one at all.

As for this one, I love Venom as a charactor, but Venom is part the reason i am worried about this movie. I think there is going to be too much going on with Sandman and Harry for the Venom storyline to be given the attention it deserves - and i think it will end up ruining the Venom plot all together. IMO, for the Venom story to be done right, it needed a movie of its own - to throw it in with two other storylines is a bad move.

my only real problem with spiderman 2 was that it mirrored the first film far too much, I get the impression it was intentional for the most part, but it irritated me.

The first one wasnt amazing, but it was good, it delivered on what was expected of it.

As for 3, I was excited, but after seeing the latest trailer, i'm actually quite worried.

Didn't like the first one either.

Enjoyed the second one, and I think I'll like the third one too.

my mate saw Spidey 3 the other day; and he has confirmed it is as bad as i dreaded it would be.

Not sure i actually want to go see it now. bugger.

yeah I've read reports now on various websites and most people seem to be giving it the average grade of 6/10 or something like that. kinda dissapointing for the most expensive movie ever made

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

as a fan of the 90's cartoon the films are big let down in comparison.

don't like the casting of Mary Jane, don't like the direction (too clean and shiny) but the films do have high production values and great special effects.

I always feel disappointed after seeing them.

Probably because they were made with the comics in mind.

As for the new film, I'll probably go see it but I'm not expecting much. From what I've read they've put too many characters in it and that kinda screws with the pacing of the film. I would've been happy with just Sandman or Venom, but putting both of them in and the second Goblin just makes it too much. IMO they should have put just Sandman and the Goblin in this one and set Venom up for the fourth film.

    Forgot I posted about this

So it's officially out on fri - good luck to yez who are still going to see it - I loved this review (yeah, yeah, its Aintitcool, but the review is spot on... )

    Spidey 3

Ah well, at least I didn't have to pay for it

i saw this last night, and sadly yes, it does suffer from the 'too many bad guys' syndrome. There's still tons of action set pieces but theyre not as good as anything from the 2nd film. venom gets about ten minutes and sandman i felt was kind of lame especially in the last fight. reminded me too much of some crap monster movie i cant quite recall right now.
i thought the pacing was fine. no boring bits but just too much going on and some contrived plot points (the venom symbiote anyone?)...

    overall enjoyable but disappointing...

...the dance scene was great i thought

o lord. so bitterly disappointed. emo peter parker. jazz dancing. a *RIDICULOUS* "funny" bit with a french waiter.

aside from that it was ok, if extremely daft. ruined venom for me. way too much of the plot and script was cringeworthy.

i wasn't expecting much, but i thought the first two films were excellent, too many villains indeed...

but isnt that meant to be the bit with bruce campbell????

thats the only reason i'm still bothering to go to the film :D:D:D (no not really, but he cheers me up)

i couldnt wait for Venom to be anounced in the film as he was one of the best comic book characters in spiderman. The sandman just seemed weak and i was suprised at him being in the films at all. Venom should be in his own film or at least be put in a longer film with Carnage (anyone else like him) if the film had to have more then one bad guy.

For a comic that came out waaaay last year, this was surprisingly prophetic:

I loved it. The humour was a bit over the top, but all the villains were accomodated very well, and some of the action scenes were top notch. The effects on Sandman were pretty cool at times too.

HAHA Perfect description. I couldnt put my finger on it . I actually enjoyed the movie. It was very rushed though. Venom was actually great but not enough of him .

Loved it but it would have been nice if my local cinema advertised that there was a damn intermission half way through it   And I will never go to a daytime showing of a movie the day it is released. Kids roaring and shouting. Stupid ****ing parents and their lack of control.

I'm thinking I accidentally saw a different film that also had Spiderman in it. I thought it was awful, couldn't wait for it to finish. Some good action scenes but they didn't make up for the rest.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,019 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I'll post in detail over in reviews but thought it was a very enjoyable, if not as good as the 2nd. I was very impressed with Sandman in particular.

But can I just say that Bruce Campbell is utterly fantastic - as usual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,956 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Well it lived up to my expectations.
    It was utter tripe,an abomination.
First hour wasnt too bad but after that it degenerated into drivel.
This film is spiderman only in name, its a joke.
With this film, the studio had set a date for May 2007, and they hadn't even a script.
Studio pressures, all sorts of things happen and it looks like the script was rushed.
MJ is excruciatingly painful in the film, awful .
I'm sure if I was ten I might have enjoyed the film .
First one was good, second one was fair but the third is crap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

it reminded me very strongly of batman forever (its not batman and robin bad yet) in a immeadiate sense it's enjoyable, but in the long term it will be heavily criticised.
