disclaimer: do not post here if you are not adding reasons for your choice. this is a discussion thread, not a listing thread

are there any films out there that you do not like, but everyone who talks about it seem to love it? I can't think of any films for which I would fall into this, but there's always one. the films I mean are things like Pulp Fiction or Terminator 2, films that get countless praise.

Your title and post are at odds with each other.

Going with the titles version, I really liked Waterworld. It's a great adventure film that everyone seems to pan. I like the concept of it, the over the top characters and some really great set pieces tie it all together well. Actually, I also like Costners other furturistic epic, The Postman, for much the same reasons. Maybe I just like Keven Costner?

Kurt Rusells 'Soldier'-widley regarded as his worst movie, but imo its one of his best.it does what it says on the tin-delivers an action packed sci fi, with kurt rusell

you just don't "get it" then. One of my top 3 of all time.

Another one that I like is Vanilla Sky, no one seems to like that.

Edit: Just looking at the OP's post. Is this films we hate or like?

Film I hate that everyone else loves:

The Matrix. I've watched it several times but I still don't get what people ever saw in this. All I see is bad acting, awful dialogue and gimicky special effects.

Films I loved that everyone else seems to hate:

Lost in Translation. One of my favourite films but I know loads of people who hated it. I love everything about it, the acting, the soundtrack, the atmosphere.

Terry Gilliam's Tideland. Most people didn't see it and many of those who did stuck it on their worst of 2006 list but I thought it was one of the best films of last year.

Films I liked that no one else did: War of the Worlds. I went to see the remake with a group of people and I'm the only one who came out and enjoyed it. I don't see what was wrong with it.

Films everyone else likes but I don't: Terminator 2 and 300. I don't see the deal with these films. It could be that I don't like movies which are based on several hours of action sequences, I need more than that.

I quiet enjoyed Unltraviolet and Aeon Flux. Two bad films which I could just switch off during and enjoy.

I also like both Waterworld and The Postman, I never did understand peoples hatred of either.

I really enjoyed I Heart Huckabees.
Everyone and their mother hated that film. They either thought it was overly pretentious nonsense and didnt get it, or thought that it was over simplified in the extreme and far too trite in its definitions.
I thought it was brilliant. Pitched fairly simply for a unique take on defining basic philosophical epiphets, with some great turns by Mark Wahlberg and Jason Schwartzmann, complete with some great performances by Existential detectives Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin. There you go. See it, hate it, insult me. Im used to it.

Hmm everyone I know who has seen it - including myself - think it is an utterly hilarious, intelligent piece of craziness. A mix of slapstick and existentialism that actually works is well worth a watch.

Many hate the new Star Wars films, but I do have a place for them. Saw Episode One at exactly the right age, so have some good memories of it. Episode Three was terrific, I thought - but again many seemed to give it a big ol' thumbs down. Not even the original has anything as powerful as Execute Order 66.

As for films I hate that everyone seems to like... I think Trainspotting is good but absurdly over-rated (although I admit I didnt see it at the time since I was like 8 years old). Casino Royale was subject to a most ridiculous amount of hyberbole. And the Princess Bride never floated my metaphorical boat.

Film I like but everyone else doesn't: The Beach - Danny Boyle's adventure thriller with Leonardo DiCaprio. I thought it was a film with a very interesting plot, some strong performances and a great score. However, most people I know hate it.

The Beach was good, very good. I'm surprised its only got a 5.9 rating on imdb, thought it would be 7+

Agreed, after 30 mins of awful acting and the 400th 'so what IS the matrix?!!??!', I walked out of the cinema.

Well for me : Star Wars was certainly one of those films that did nothing for me that every other guy same to be raving about. The sentiments expressed for "The Matrix" I would apply to Star Wars. I was waiting for the exciting bits to happen only to find it was over! Incidentally, I did enjoy The Matrix - bit ironic that!

By the way, I did enjoy Lost in Translation and would concur with the statement above - I've seen it twice on telly now. I also like 4 Weddings And a Funeral and Bridget Jones Diary - 2 films people pretend they don't like.

Ah I see the title has been changed. In that case I nominate Finding Nemo, an average (at best) kids movie that like so many animated films these days just seems to have been churned out.

    Ok here's the controversial ones.

Movies that are absolute suckfests which people love:

Requiem for a dream - Loved by film students and film snobs, this is an overrated piece of self indulgent crap which has a few nice camera shots.

The Shawshank Redemption - Admittedly I enjoyed it the 1st time i saw it. Now when i watch it, i see a mellowdramatic steaming pile of turd. I wish I could hack Morga Freeman p with a chainsaw a he's narrating.

Million Dollar Baby - Another mellow dramatic stinkfest that was in no way worthy of an oscar. Agin id liek to get the saw out on Freeman. And the ay he says mo chuaisle. Suck my b*lls clint.

Adam Sandler movies- All of them. That includes happy gilmore.

    Gladiator - Pile o' turd

Movies i like that other people hate:

Amadeus - Fantatic in every way
Star Wars I-III - At face value they did exactly what they said on the tin. Very entertaining

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

Is it really fair to say that "other people hate" Amadeus when it's got 8.4/10 on IMDB and is #80 on its top 250? I mean, you're hardly in the minority there...

Old Boy would be top of the list of movies I don't like but other people do. I just found the story dreary, unconvincing and underdeveloped. Still haven't managed to sit through it a second time.

Terrible acting and crap special effects but good movies all the same. 2nd one was fairly weak but the 3rd one is a much higher budget affair and is fairly good too.

I would also have to give my vote to the Matrix though now that the title has been amended.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 817 ✭✭✭md99

American History X... it's good, good performances, engaging, entertaining... I just don't like it that much, I don't know why. Everyone else seems to adore it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭krinpit

For me, it has to be Anchorman. I do understand that its supposed to be a jibe at stupid slapstick American humour, but it's just not funny. At all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60 ✭✭MrSquishSquash

I agree, Anchorman wasn't that funny, Poor one-liners and a brutal story. It seemed to just become the "status quo" of what people should think funny was  . Now Zoolander was a truly great comedy :) with that crowd (you should only watch it once though)!

I would have thought the complete opposite to b). So many people go on about how amazing it is, but to me it's pants.

Another one I love but everyone else hates is the remake of Psycho. Ignoring the "there was no need to do it" rants that you'll always hear, the story is amazing and kept the same, the acting is far superior to the original (Vince Vaughn is so much better and more convincing than Perkins) and the directing, while almost identical, is brilliant even taking into account that the directing techniques have aged quite a bit, they're still effective.

Have to agree with you on the War of The Worlds. I really enjoyed that film I found it quite exciting and I like that feeling of dread you get when one of the tripods shows up.

Can't agree however with your other choices.

Personally I absolutely fu(king abhor Kill Bill vol 1 + 2. From start to finish its like QT strung different movies together and badly. Words fail me describe how much I hate those films. But people just lap it up and I'll never understand it. I think it has something imho to do with QT's reputation.

Actually, not only did I despise Kill Bill, I thought it was one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. Although, in fairness, the second one was rather good...in my opinion.

Also liked War or the Worlds, and I do like Adam Sandler movies. How could anyone not like Happy Gilmore? Classic movie...

A film that was highly recommended to me and regret ever investing the time into watching it was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Didnt enjoy it one bit.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭30txsbzmcu2k9w

Yeah i'd go with Kill Bill aswell, badly cast self-aware rubbish IMHO.

I thought A History of Voilence was one of the worst films ive ever seen , dodgy acting, uneven script and a ridiculous turn by Ed Harris as the bad guy with the cliched scar and mucky eye.

I think equilibrium got slated as a matrix ripoff a couple of years ago but i'd take that movie over keanu and co anyday.

i liked Alexander - people focused on slating the accents, i liked what Oliver stone did there though. Who knows what kind of accent they had back then? its sure as hell better than the Hollywood schlock accent Brad pitt used in troy...

Only good Adam Sandler Film i've seen is Punch Drunk Love

Lord of the Rings for me.

I watched the City of Gold cartoons as a kid and thought they were a lot better than LOTR.

Besides the CGI and all that, I cannot see what the big fuzz about this was for.

    Couldn't bear it!

    Sorry!

Everyone was all like... Omg!! Ong Bak is ammmaaazing!!! All it was to me was a man jumping through stuff, then the same scene repeated.. in slo-mo. Yaaaaaaawn.
Movies I love that everyone else hates are Horror sequels.. I love all 9 Hellraisers and all the Friday 13th sequels, one exception is the last two Halloweens - I hope Rob Zombie makes the next one better.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 35,946 Mod ✭✭✭✭dr.bollocko

Seeing as how the thread has changed title confusingly, I will have to say Titanic. That was the biggest suckfest ever committed to celluloid.
I couldnt stand Memento either. It was ok to watch once, but I hated every character in that movie, and I thought the timeline switching in it was just an annoying gimmick.

Also 2001: A Space Oddysey. What a long, boring, confusing, boring, pointless, boring, over done, poorly acted, overly self-aware, boring pile of an old man's festering man-goo.

Oh and that 6th Sense pile of crap. Everyone telling me what a chiller it was, what a slick horror it was, and saying how you'd never see the twist coming.
That's because the twist is the most retarded, artarded decision to throw a useless script out the window and just pull it all together with some piss-poor turn-around story thats supposed to leave you guessing.
It left me guessing as to why they still let that M Night Shamalyan bitch make movies.

Ah good ranting sets my soul free.

even oliver stone thought alexander was crap:

After a whipping by the critics and slaughter at the worldwide box office, the director made a public apology, admitting, "Alexander deserved better than I gave him."

Also 2001: A Space Oddysey. What a long, boring, confusing, boring, pointless, boring, over done, poorly acted, overly self-aware, boring pile of an old man's festering man-goo.
i've never managed to get through that film. i've never even seen the red blinking light that says "i can't do that dave" that was ripped off in everything. that's in 2001 isn't it?

i just sat there for what felt like three days waiting for something to happen and then didn't want to take the risk that it was another matrix 2, where i was waiting for something to happen right up until the credits.

the same with man on fire. all i remeber is watching denzel washington load a gun or clean it or something for about ten minutes. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. and it had the annoying girl from war of the worlds. i left when it should have been over and there was another hour and a half left

this is true. the idea that someone would not realise that he hadn't been able to talk to anyone for the last 6 months is fairly stupid. and they only got worse after that. signs and the village made just as much sense. i remember a critic saying "M night Shamalyan is not afraid to dip into the ridiculous". well maybe he should be

First movie up for me is Napolean Dynamite, what an absolute pile of rubbish. It has got to ne the least funny comedly of all time. If it wasnt for the dance scene then it would be up there for worst movie of all time.

Ill probablt get abuse for this one but I hate Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Painfully unfunny. So many people told me that it was the funniest movie they have seen but I thought it was awful. Not a single scene raised a laugh from me and I like stupid humour. very poor.

All Star Wars movies are next up. Terrible dialogue and just plain boring. Revenge of the Sith being the worst of the lot.

Kill Bill 1&2 are both artsy rubbish. Bored me to tears. I watched the second on ein the hope that it would improve my ejoyment of the first but it just made it worse. If QT pointed a camera at a wall for 90 minutes people would say it was brilliant.

    Honourable mentions to the following:

    Superman Returns
    300
    Dark City
    Titanic
    Anchorman
    All Harry Potter Movies

Last I heard Stone was still vehemently defending Alexander, he released a 3rd cut of it a while ago. I'm a big Stone fan and I really wanted to like Alexander but I have to admit it was total disaster. The biggest mistake Stone made was casting Farrell, who pretty much ruined the whole the movie. But to be fair to Stone he doesn't have the kind of pull in the industry that he used to have and he had to rush the entire thing through production. I still can't forgive him for the terrible casting though.

And Kill Bill would have been nearly a masterpiece had the Weinsteins stopped blowing Tarantino long enough to tell him to stop being a baby and cut the film down to 2 hours. They bullied Scorsese into butchering Gangs of New York but Quentin can do whatever he likes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,057 ✭✭✭Wacker

Kingpin, I'll echo your sentiments regarding Monty Python and The Holy Grail. I think there were a few good jokes in there, such as the Black Knight, but most of it was just annoying.
I don't think too many people loved Superman Returns though. Although I kind of did.

I seriously dislike the Breakfast Club. The idea of the film annoys me more than the execution, which wasn't bad, in fairness. I think the whole notion that "we are all victims, in our own way, and we have to see through our differences" should only apply if you actually ARE VICTIMS of something. These kids weren't. They were just annoying little gits.

Personally disagree, but it does divide opinion. Didn't you even like the fight scene at the end of Vol.1??

I enjoyed the fight scene but one scene out of an entire film is not enough to keep me entertained.

I really thought 300 was poor. I need slightly more than constant battle scenes to keep me interested. After the first tem minutes of battle scenes it all starts to get very boring very fast. 300 was definitely style over substance.
