CWC Day 37 thread - Ireland V Sri Lanka

The end of the World Cup road for Ireland, what an adventure its been, from the stupifying lows of loses to Scotland, Kenya, Canda and Holland in the world cricket league, to the wins over Pakistan and Bangladesh. In all bar one game we were competitve at least. Today is Adi Birrell's last game as manager.

I think Sri Lanka will win (altho Ive had a small patriotic punt on Ireland at 10/1). Should be a good game.

    Thoughts?

    Updates here later.

As it seems the Top 4 in the Super 8 table won't now change positions, it depends entirely on what team Sri Lanka send out. Will they rest Murali, Vaas and will Malinga be still out?

    Its Grenada, so toss well.

In Grenada I'd have to go for Sri Lanka.

I would love to see Ireland win though.

i really hope ireland can end there quite magical tournament with another shock

A win would be superb but as long as the lads dont get destroyed I will be happy. I hope Mailnga/Vaas or Murali do not play or it could be repeat of the Oz debacle.

I would really like to see the last game live. Anyone got a live feed link? Cheers! :)

    White out, Carroll in

C'mon Ireland... time to put 300 on the board.

Yeah hope we can end on a high. Has anyone figured out why they left Vaas and murali out against Aus.

not a chance against this bowling attack, I would be happy with 150 +

Why give Australia practise against their bowlers? Also don't forget this has being a long campign for them. The games aginst South Africa and England went right down to the wire and besides the result was totally irrevelant on monday. They had qualified so why not give the squad players a chance?

I think Jayawardene admitted it at the toss the other day against the Aussies. They kept their best hands in reserve, to make sure they got 2nd or 3rd spot.

Ahhh yes, well done Sky... **** the Ireland game ... lets navel gaze at the press reaction to England's demise.

Time for Morgan to deliver with the bat !!

    i'd be happy with 220 +

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,870 ✭✭✭mikeruurds

My sarcasm was meant in jest. Ireland need to put a decent score, in excess of 200, on the board.

They have the ability to bat well. I'm just a bit worried about the batsmen reading Murali.

Quite unrealistic I'd say. Murali should amboozle the batsmen. Its like the shaun tait scenario. They just dont plat against such high quality spin bowlers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

yeah Morgan has being a huge let down he will probably get in look comfortable and be ran out for 15 runs! Hope I am wrong though I8 would love to see him get a big score.

    Ireland 0/0 after 2 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

a run come on boys we can get 400 + here:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Paddy Powers reckons Ireland will reach roughly around the 158 mark. Its 5/6 for either under or over that score.

    Ireland 5/0 after 4 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

7 gone 28-1. Pretty solid start by the 'Arr-ish' as charles colville would say.

Bray goes, he either looked very impressive or hopeless during that innings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,870 ✭✭✭mikeruurds

Bray just thwacked two consecutive 4s off of Maharoof's bowling.

Ire 28/0 in the 8th over.

    Edit: Oops... missed that wicket.

    44W0W in this over 28-2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

28-3 morgan and botha gone for ducks ah this is depressing

Has Morgan hit double figures in the WC , think hes played every game , and his total for all matches might just have scraped past the double figure -- at leat the English won't be sniffing after him :)

overall depressing stuff. Johnstone was being very optimistic in the papers today, and confident of ending on a high and vicrory . Pity.

no need to be so negative, if porty and o'brien can stay in for a while we could post a decent score.

They need to start scoring runs though not just staying in.

What does Eoin Morgan contribute to this team?

48-5 This is going to be embarrasing.

2-2 after his first over we've lost 20-7 in the last 12 overs. :(

    49-7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    Jesus.... 49/8.... Never predicted this....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

Oh dear Oh dear, our worst fears realised Ireland now 49 for 8 with only 20 overs gone :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,780 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

It's such a shame for the team, lets just remember all they've achieved.

This match should be over by teatime though

    53 for 9

Guess australia werent as good as we thought :D

After an opening partnership of 28 in 7 overs we've now lost 9/26 in 16 overs :(

Sri Lanka have been pretty awesome though. Pity the Ban game wasnt the last one.

    SIX from Langford-Smith :)

    60/9

There final was against bangaladesh, which they won and i am sure they celebrated it in style like they deserved too.

Only thing is, this is probaly the lowest score in WC histroy?

    Ireland 63/9 after 24 overs.

Nope - they had a midnight curfew on Sunday. They would not want to give it away in the last game.

Gwan the Boyd and the Lanky... :D

    Partnership of 22

    76/9 after 27 overs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    Innings over

Ireland 77 all out in the 28th over.

Maharoof 4 for 25 and Murali 4 for 19 doing the damage.

(6th worst total in CWC history)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭Marshy

That maharoof over changed the complexion of the game totally. Disappointing end.

they were like rabbits in the headlights against Murli.
hadnt a clue how to play him.

In fairness the irish have done extremly well in the tournie.
They got more than they came for ie ODI team status.

Hopefully the new WI coach can come in and bring the team on a little further.

well done to them for beating two test nations and drawing against another. massive achievement

The lower order put a bit of respectability òn the score -- i don't mean to harp on about Morgan , but wasn't he meant to be a reasonable/promising batsman before the WC

Indeed. Only two rollovers in the tournament. They've gone beyond our wildest expectations.
