    Hey all,

So i recently started the Gym and trying to eat healthy, for the last couple days ive kept myself from eating the normal rubbish im used to, heres what ive been eating, im 24, 5ft 11" and 16 1/2 stone.

    Breakfast,
8.30 1 Bowl of Alpin with chopped Banana,
    Snack,
11.00 2 pieces of fruit, (Banana, Apple or Pear)
    Lunch,
    2.00 Salad/Veg with 1/2 cold chicken breast,
    Dinner,
6/7.00 Stirfry veg with brown rice or brown pasta,

3/4 evenings a week, i do 30-45mins Cardio work out and 30-45mins weights,

I dont mind being heavier then the average 24y.o male once i tone up, Just sick of been embarresed taking off my top at the beach or pool.
Would it be good for me to incorporate protein shakes in to my diet?
I always feel hungry after the Gym but stop myself from eating, is that a good or bad thing?

Thanks in advane, I'll be very gratefull for any advice people can give me.

Just a note on the Alpin - it is full of sugar, you would be much better off with a bowl of porridge.

As I don’t like porridge can anybody recommend some other cereals good to eat in the mornings? Also is it better to eat dinner before or after the gym?

I don't know of other good cereals but why not have some good quality brown bread with scrambled eggs or a smoothie made with good yoghurt?

heres what i do(i make it in bulk so it lasts the week):

Get one of those measuring cups for your kitchen
Put 6 cups of raw oats into a big bowl
Put 2 or 3 tablespoons of honey and about half a cup of apple juice into a saucepan and heat until it goes runny, pour over the oats and mix so that they are fully coated
Turn on the oven to 180 degrees, line a tray with baking parchment and pour your mix onto it and fire into the oven
leave it in for about a half an hour, taking out and mixing around fairly often so they are evenly toasted
leave to cool and put in a container.

i eat this every morning with natural yogurt and a handful of nuts and its gooood and reasonably healthy in the way you know exactly wats goin in and you can control it

Eat dinner after the gym. A big feed post training will super charge your recovery and make you feel a hell of a lot better the next day.

You need to get more protein in. Shakes would be an option, but ideally real whole foods would be better.

What about Weetabix cereal would that be fattening?

It can be. Eating more calories than you expend will result in "fattening". Whether it would be is another thing. Many hear post diets yet tell nothing about portion sizes. You really have to weight stuff to get an idea of the calories you are taking in. Portion sizes on cereals are usually very low, at least weetabix is in portioned sizes already, but the milk use is usually lower than what most use.
e.g. 8.30 1 Bowl of Alpin with chopped Banana
Depending on the bowl & size of banana & how much milk & is it full fat etc, that breakfast could be 1000kcal.

You say you dont like porridge. I just make pancakes with porridge oats. Oats + milk + 1 egg. Fry in little or no oil on a nonstick pan.

I thought I had come accross most things in life but this is a new one on me. Might try it this weekend.

Forgot to say it should be blended up. I have a mini blender I stick it in. Great thing for protein shakes too, it crushes up ice so you get a freezing cold milkshake.

You could just use ready milled oat flour, or mill up oat yourself dry in a big blender and store it.

rubadub that is absolute genius. Protein and slow burn carbs in a breakfast so tasty it'll feel like a cheat. I LOVE IT!

/me runs off to buy a new blender.

I use 60g of oats, then pour in milk until it is almost up to the level of the top of the oats, then put 1 medium egg on top and whizz it up. I will see how much milk that is tomorrow, I think I posted it somewhere before but cant find it. Easiest just to add a little milk at a time, depends on how thin or thick you prefer your pancakes. I put a little maple syrup on them too. I think it would be a great way of getting kids to eat a better breakfast.

If I am out of milk I add water and some whey protein, the whey makes the mixture more fluffy too. Or you can add a small amount of baking soda to the mix, then after blending add in some lemon juice which will react and make it really fluffy, be careful with this as it can double in volume and overflow!

    I use this to blend,

got it in dunnes for €40, it is great for protein shakes. I use the tiny little container you can see in the bottom of the pic. You dont end up with all the mix sticking to the container like in a big blender.

Thats true! somebody in another thread said they would try them, but only as a treat on weekends! As though any decent tasting food must be bad for you. I only eat food I like, otherwise you cannot stick to a healthier diet in the longrun.

Cheers for all the advice. One last question what would be better for my diet? Weetabix at half 8 or else no breakfast and go straight to lunch at 12?

    Are you taking the piss?
That phrase about breakfast being the most important meal of the day is true.
Eating regular meals increases the metabolism. Small evenly calorie sized meals at even intervals means your stomach never gets strectched. After a few months at this you will find your stomach will shrink in size, so less food will satisfy your hunger. Also small frequent meals means your next meal is never far away so it is easier to resist snacking.

Aim for 6 meals a day. I was on 6x300kcal meals for a while, now I am on 6x400kcal. Your breakfast can be a little bigger than the others since it sets you up for the day. If you dont have it you will find yourself eating snacks and other crap at lunch since your body will be craving energy.
    what ratio of oats:milk:egg please?
Checked today, mine was 60g oats, 60ml or 60g milk & 1 medium egg.

Just wondering in relation to my diet at the moment does anyone know if id be better having a cereal bar rather than a bowl of weetabix? If yes what bars would you recommend?

On the cereal front...can I ask what is the next best cereal to porridge?

I find that porridge makes me fart like a good thing all day:o , so I've avoided it for a while now. I'm currently eating bitesize shredded wheat and add in some sunflower/pumpkin/sesame and linseed seeds.
It's only got wheat in it, so I'm figuring it's not the worst and the fact that I'm not a morning person, so only ever manage to get dressed and eat a bowl of cereal before legging it out the door late, that making pancakes or the like is a weekend luxury.
    Any advice?

I eat Speical K. And while it's probably not "optimal" it hasn't let me down yet!

Yeah, I've eaten special K before, but I find it is so salty that if you eat a dry piece you can actually taste the salt on it!

I normally chop up a banana and throw it in. Solves that problem!
