    Opinions on this is required..

Will coin in my opinion tomorrow but the highly anticipated new show created by the fantastic Tim Minear and starring the always brillant Nathan Fillion has graced us with it's presence.

Anyone who knows me knows that i think Tim Minear can do no wrong ('Firefly', 'The Inside', 'Wonderfalls' etc.) and also knows Nathan Fillion (or Captain Mal as he shall forever be known) is, without a doubt, the most under-rated actor in the business!

But but but but but but lets do some maths.

((FOX + Tim Minnear) * large fanbase) = cancelled by episode 6.

    I'll be watching anyway.

Loved it.. loved it.. LOVED IT!

So much fun, so much energy and just downright enjoyable "switch-your-brain-off" TV.

The one downside was some patchy acting from some of the minor characters.. but with a cast that size, it was probably to be expected.

Herc from AintItCoolNews loved it also!

    Eagerly awaiting episode 3.

Ah yes, the "Herc Curse"! :D

Suprised the show has gotten such good reviews universally.. seems like the type of show that critics would love to pan.

Enjoy it while it lasts people... ratings have not been kind! :(

Tim Minear just can't catch a break with Fox.
CBS started and ended the night strong to score an overall ratings win over ABC Sunday, while FOX's "Drive" got stuck in traffic.

For the night, CBS averaged a 7.6 rating/12 share, just beating ABC's 7.3/12. NBC finished third at 4.7/8. FOX, 3.3/5, came in fourth, and The CW earned a 1.3/2.

ABC rather easily won the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.3 rating. CBS, 2.9, grabbed second. FOX was third at 2.4, followed by NBC, 2.0, and The CW, 0.8.

CBS' "60 Minutes" ruled the 7 p.m. hour with an 8.0/14. "America's Funniest Home Videos," 5.0/9, put ABC in second. "Dateline" drew a 3.7/7 for NBC. A pair of "Simpsons" reruns averaged 2.8/5 for FOX, good enough to beat a "7th Heaven" repeat on The CW.

A rerun of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 6.3/10, moved ABC into the lead at 8 p.m. "The Amazing Race" posted a 5.6/9 for CBS, holding off a second hour of "Dateline" for second place. The premiere of "Drive" drew only a 3.7/6 for FOX. A new "7th Heaven" on The CW delivered a 1.9/3.

"Desperate Housewives," 10.3/16, drew the night's biggest audience for ABC at 9 p.m. "Cold Case" scored a 7.7/12 for CBS, while NBC remained in third with a "Deal or No Deal" repeat, 5.4/8. The second hour of "Drive" dipped slightly to 3.4/5. The CW finished its night with an "America's Next Top Model" rerun.

CBS regained the lead at 10 p.m. as "Without a Trace" earned a 9.1/15. ABC got a 7.7/13 from "Brothers & Sisters," while "The Apprentice" averaged 4.1/7 for NBC.

On Saturday, drama repeats and "48 Hours" averaged 4.6/9 to give CBS a victory. FOX was second at 3.8/7, followed by NBC, 3.3/6, and ABC, 2.7/5.

Episode 3 aired in the US last night! Huzzah!

Fox will not have patience with Drive especilly if it is proving a weak lead in for 24.

Here are the ratings in simpler terms:

Take a look at Drive versus former occupant Prison Break on the year-ago evening.

In series-premiere news, the two-hour launch of Fox drama Drive was stuck in second gear, with a mere 6.05 million viewers (#4) and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49 (#3) from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that was only a slight improvement from Fox’s week-ago combination of a repeat of The Simpsons, a repeat of Family Guy and two original episodes of The War at Home. Here is the half-hour breakdown for the disappointing Drive:

    Sunday Episodes 1 & 2:
    8:00 p.m. Viewers: 6.41 million (#4), A18-49: 2.6/ 7 (#3)
    8:30 p.m. Viewers: 6.32 million (#4), A18-49: 2.6/ 7 (#3)
    9:00 p.m. Viewers: 5.87 million (#4), A18-49: 2.6/ 6 (#3)
    9:30 p.m. Viewers: 5.59 million (#4), A18-49: 2.6/ 6 (#3)

    Episode 3:
    Fox/Monday 8-9 p.m.

    4/17/06 Prison Break – Viewers: 8.10 million (#3), A18-49: 3.5/10 (#2)
    4/16/07 Drive – Viewers: 5.64 million (#4), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#4)
    Percent Change – Viewers: -30, A18-49: -34

This hsow will not last long and if the erosion continues Fox will not return it to the schedule after its first six episodes after which it was going on a planned hiatus even before the season aired.

i had heard absolutely zilch about the show until that review of the 2 hour pilot was posted up on AICN, so its pretty fascinating to me to read all about how the show finally came to fruition(with all re-casts and everything).
im trying my best not to love this show, because i dont know how long it'll last(before it either gets cancelled or gets boring), but DAMN is it fun!
the music is absolutely fantastic as well, im already craving the soundtrack, if they ever make one :D

is anyone else getting the completely irrational thought that they'd love to join in the race ? haha

I have episode 3 wating for me to watch when I get home (along with ep 17 of Lost)...

Why do the american tv public not watch good shows?? I mean Angel, Arrested Development, Veronica Mars.. all axed before their time and by the sounds of it Drive is going to go the same way... Even though I have only seen 2 episodes of Drive I love the show, the concept, the camerawork, the music..

Just looked at the first two episodes last night.

Mal Reynolds and Jubal Early together again in the opening scenes. :D

Doesn't look like Richard Brooks character will be a recurring role though!

I have seen the first 3 episodes and I think that the show looks very promising. The only problem is that only the first 6 episodes have been scheduled so if the ratings don't improve the final 7 episodes won't be shown on network TV.

You can really see where the future of this show is.

First, it recieves low ratings but critical raves.

Gets put on hiatus after the first half-dozen or so shows.

The unaired episode end up being burned off on the web or some crappy cable provider.

Fans become enraged, start lame campaign to get show renewed.

FOX get 5% increase in hate mail and letter bombs over the summer.

With no hope of renewal, fans turn their attention to a DVD release.

DVD finally gets released, but all the fantastic music is taken out over royalty costs and replaced with Elevator Hits, Vol 1.

DVD sales do reasonable sales. Fans get giddy.

FOX announce no plans to bring back Drive.

For the next 10 years, fans congregate on myriad of online sites, deploring another great TV classic killed before its time. Blame FOX and stupid Americans for not watching/understanding/supporting the show.

That said, I thought the pilot was pretty good. The camera work in particular was done really well. I must ask, is there really room for another series with an overriding story arc. We've already got Lost, Heroes, Jericho and many others where the viewer is expected to watch every episode in order to follow the story.

It's a shame it's not more linear and open ended. The ratings looked dismal though, which suprised me as the buzz about this show has been huge.

This is one that I'm going to try watch over the Summer. Looks like I'll have no Summer!

    3 weeks. 3 f*cking weeks.

I hate Fox. I reeeeeeeealy do.

Why does Tim Minear keep going to them with all his shows? Surely he can see a pattern developing here? Or maybe he has a contract with them, or something, I dunno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,413 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Ah bollocks.. really enjoying the show! :(

Though it suffers from some really REALLY patchy characters and acting, the fun and noisy style of the show made it very different!

Tim Minear needs to learn to refuse any more pickups from FOX! :(

How the hell does Tim Minear keep getting series commitments. I mean, his shows may be popular with a cult audience, they don't break out. Surely he would be better putting his efforts into writing for other series.

I can never understand the compulsion by writers to have that Created By credit at the start of a show.

I'm really not surprised this got cancelled. I'm just surprised it was picked up at all.

    I'm not surprised.

I had that feeling in my stomach when I watched the first episode. The same feeling as when I first saw The Inside, that "this is too good a program to last on Fox".

Ah, Fox - the Real Madrid of television channels. Did it ever occur to them that nobody is ever going to watch any new series again simply because they know it's not worth the investment as it will be cancelled half-way through the theme tune? Ergo self-fulfilling prophecy and the show dies from lack of faith and is replaced with reality TV slurry. Why don't they just skip the first bit and go straight into screening Celebrity Pile Cream Application VII as soon as the season opens?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 69 ✭✭Reptileboy

Is it wrong that I don't entirely blame FOX for the cancellation. I mean, the ratings were particularly dire, and it was very slow to start with. Which I can never understand. Slow burn = quick death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

No.. you mis-understood completely. He's saying Fox needs to start giving shows a chance.

If the show doesn't perform stupendously in it's first few episodes, they're far too quick in cancelling it.

How many examples of bad decisions can we think of Fox cancelling before they even got half a season through? Firefly, The Inside, Wonderfalls etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

    was it advertised much?
i know it had a fantasic time slot......right before 24

a bit off topic but meh:is 24s ratings still going up?
i know each seasons average has been more than last since 3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,617 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Wasn't it on at the same time as Heroes and Dancing with Penguins (or some such show?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

yeh it was on at the same time as heroes...
another reason given by FOX why it was pulled so quickly was that it actually pulled viewers away from 24. I.E. theyre blaming 24's falling ratings on Drive's lack of(which of course reeks of BS but whatever).

even though the show got ordered 13 episodes, only 6 were ever made(along with only 6 scripts, no more exist).

after 4 episodes, i was finally getting settled into the show and all the characters and speculating on what could happen to the characters in future episodes.

Only 6 episodes were scripted and filmed, so - no - I don't think so.
(They were going to show 6, then have a long break before the rest)

Son's of biatches, I was wondering why I couldn't "find" Drive this morning. Fecking Fox canceling another show I'm just getting in to  I don't think I'll ever watch another Fox premier before it ends the first season, ABC either as they have an awful track record with new series too. Putting Drive up against Heroes was an incredibly stupid move though, something Fox's execs excel at.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,011 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Cable ftw for shows that require time to build up a story and audience. Seriously, Minear needs to keep away from the Fux at Fox. On one hand, some part of them respects him for commisioning the shows in the first place. On the other hand, some people hate him and kill the show as quickly as possible.

3-4 weeks is not enough to accurately judge ratings. IIRC, 'House' only did middling well in its first season. The network stuck with it and now it's one of the highest-rated shows in the US. Ditto for "Grey's Anatomy". Why not give these sort of shows more of a chance? It worked for "Lost".

Oh well not even sure if I'll bother watching the other 3 episodes :( Bloody ratings wars!
