I'm going in solo for the simple reason that I couldn't ever think of anything for my document, also I'm too lazy to make one, so figures.

ummmm the french tend to say: je suis pas rather than je ne suis pas! its more for those who are fluent though:p

You'd probably be pulled up on it for LC grammar though, we're often pulled up on it. I wasn't trying to be a smartass or anything, dunno why I was censored!

I brought a photo into my French oral. Barely anyone else had in my school, so the examiner was quite happy with it from the beginning!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

    Quelles nouvelles, mon ami noir?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 817 ✭✭✭md99

You guys raise good points, it's true that idioms are great but baring in mind that only some and not all examiners will recognise them (there's only 2 actual French French teachers examining in the country, I had one test me last week and she informed me of this)... you could always be unfortunate to get the one idiot who doesn't recognise an idiom and marks you down... happened me in the pre written once or twice..

A site i swear by is google.com, on the right of the searchbar click on language tools.

its great for phrases, like the popular North Kerry saying ''je suis coincé entre une roche et un endroit dur'' :D:D:D:D

As for my document, im taking this in: trucks004.jpg

i have a french french 1 for the real deal apparently.

as for the document, brought 1 in last yr and got around a B1/B2 in the oral, my friend didn't and got an A1 with a diff examiner. Most of my class got Cs and Ds though!! Depends on preparation really.

Help! I'm completely screwed, I have to present the document to my class by Thursday but I don't even know what to do it on! :(

I don't play any sports because of "medical" issues so I can't do it on sport, I haven't been to any exciting countries/trips lately (nothing substantial enough for a document anyway)... But I was thinking I could do it on Music... Though I don't even play an instrument (sorry, I'm a bit boring that way:p)

    Any ideas?

I just need to give a 10 minute presentation and then the class bombards me with questions for a little while... until they're all satisfied really.
Learning off phrases and the like is not a problem, just can't think of anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭TheVoodoo

On the Actual day of the exam, the examiner wont know, or care, if you play sport ect.

What will be important is your standard of French!

Im doing my LC this year too, and sure Im going to be making half the stuff up in the Oral, because its easy to talk about.

Dont complicte it for yourself! Just do whatever you can talk about easily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭EmmetF

Thanks, but at the moment all I'm really concerned with is getting something done for Thursday.

I just need anything, but I can't really lie because all my classmates will know I don't play sports and ask stuff like where do I play and the like takin the piss :D

Also about 3 lads in my class are doing it on rugby and football, and I wanna keep it as original as I can

I think I might go ahead with Music, I can talk about bands I like, concerts I've been to... might mention how I'm trying to learn the gee-tar.
Any suggestions? Oh and does anyone know where I can get pictures of the Kanye concert in Phoenix Park, or Fiddy Cent in the RDS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,973 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

A female drummer(moi!) always goes down well!!
Have mine from last year, the examiner liked it last year so I'm keeping it this year!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭BanzaiBk

I did mine on Marcel Proust's book A la Recherche du Temps Perdu. Went down great with the examiner and she only looked for fairly basic info about the book.

    - Music festivals
    Arctic Monkeys - Fav band
50 Cent live - Concert I was at recently

need one more though, any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭EmmetF

That post was (my bad, didn't know I couldn't say) btw, dunno why that's censored.

Edit: The festival in question was in early July.

My French teacher is of the belief that one isn't marked on their document and that it's only put in to calm the student... so we're not doing one.
My apathy towards French since the Junior Cert has grown such that I'm not going to bother doing one on my own time. I'll just pray for the best come exam day.

wtf? Of course you're marked on your document. In fact, IIRC, it counts for about 20%(maybe 10%, I can't remember) which otherwise would just be distributed as part of the normal convo.

I was apathetic too. But think of it this way, they can mark you completely on random things they ask you or mark you on random things as well as something definite. It's a lot smarter to do a document IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Yeah it seems like a good idea, but currently I've not the time (nor desire) to do it. Also I'd say if you had it badly prepared you'd be penalised more harshly than say, having a bad answer to a random question put to you.

I'd be careful with your document there. I know it sounds stupid but if you have a picture of something or someone controversial you could be asked abstract questions. 50 cent is involved with gangs and guns etc and the examiner could ask you about problems like that in ireland! Alot of examiners try to catch students out! It happened to me with foreign sports in croke park but i bulleed my way through and got an A1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭EmmetF

Oh thanks, I never really considered that. Well for tomorrow I should be ok, I don't think my teacher will be that stingy and ask me something like that. I'll definitely prepare it better for the Oral Exam.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭EmmetF

Just thought I'd let you all know my document worked a charm 2day. I mentioned I lost my wallet at Kanye West and she started talking about how she lost hers recently, all I had to do was agree with how tragic it was! :D

Merci à tous de votre aide!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,225 ✭✭✭fillefatale

    BE prepared for anything.
I had a large collage with me, then she started asking me questions about was I artistic and how creative I was.. I wasn't prepared for a question like that, so I got nervous and kept repeating myself. I didn't get the grade I wanted needless to say.

yup, defo bringing in something. it's an easy way to learn off lines, talk about something you like, and most important.. calm yourself by banging out a few lines ya know n have prepared!!:D

im doing mine on my favourite band and the concert i saw them at! thinkin of putting some pics and a bitta of info about them on an A4/A3 sized sheet! that sound ok?? like would my writing have to be in french or english on the sheet!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

    Just bring a pic tbh.

I personally just took down an A4 sheet of paper, on which was printed a picture of my favourite band, off the wall in my room, brought it in and talked about it.

On topic, yes, i'll be going in armed!

Edit: Just noticed how old this thread is. *awaits scolding from mod*

    Armed, of course. :P

And I quite like the idea suggested earlier in the thread about being extremely dramatic when introducing the document - "VOILA!! MON DOCUMENT!!" :D
