Hey there just a quick question to help out with my always improving diet;)

I know brown rice is the best to go with but im not a huge fan of the 40 minute cooking time:o I have started using wholewheat pasta tho and eliminated most forms of bread, apart from the odd PB sambo on mccambridges bread (mmmmm)

So my question is, which would be the healthier option to bring to college tomorrow?? Couscous or white long grain rice??

p-nut, depending on what you're doing with the brown rice boil it in batches and freeze it in portions? Rice is about the only carb I don't like so I rarely bother but my housemates do. They don't simply defrost it and say it tastes best when used in a stir fry or something after defrosting?

You can get Uncle Ben's boil in the bag brown rice. I'm not sure if they do anything to the rice to make it cook in 10 mins.
Now I'm not usually someone who would use BITB, but it seems to be ok.

Basmati rice has a surprisngly low GI rating - and it is quite quick to cook too.

CousCous Gets my vote, there a beter ballance between the carbs, fat and protein in it, over all i mean.

and it dosent take that long to cook.

Coscous makes t-ha sleepy, i.e. ramps up his blood-sugar too fast. As does white rice.

Uncle bens do a fast non-boil in bag brown rice. I think it is 10mins, might be 15-20, and it is cheaper than the bags. Also if you pour on boiling water onto the normal brown rice and leave it for an hour or more it absorbs a lot of water and cooks really quick.
Or get a non stick pressure cooker, great things.

I got slated over on the retro section a couple of months ago for saying I used my pressure cooker all the time!

Lolz there's one at home but I've never seen it used. A toy of the eighties methinks...

Edit: is couscous wholegrain? Its made from wheat isn't it?

I remember that thread, many were saying they did use them.

That was the type of comment people were making in that thread. Pressure cookers have been in use in normal kitchens for many decades. "Canning" is very popular in the US. I dont see why people think they are gimmicks. Many feared them due to myths or acutal accidents from misuse. I do not know why more are not using them, especially people who claim to be "green" and/or energy efficient. Keeps nutrients in too.

Bulgar Wheat FTW! Try it, it tastes great (use some low salt stock, theres some french onion cubes you can get that taste amazing) and cooks in about 3 or 4 minutes in a pot of boiling water.

High in fibre too. It's like a more wholegrain cous cous, with a slightly nutty flavour.

You guys and your fancy foods...

    I'm all about white rice.

If I'm leaning out I eat less
If I'm maintaing I eat the normal amount
And If I'm postworkout I eat it all.

Ye i found this stuff last night, its called wholegrain rice. Gonna introduce this into the new diet plan next week. Gonna be way handier cooking this the night before college than waiting a good 40 minutes. and yes, i am very impatient:rolleyes:
