BMWR1100R - I think I'm getting old !!!

I spent the morning drooling over BMW R850R & R1100R's on ebay and the web.

Has anyone any expierience with them without stating the obvious that they're a BMW or an old mans bike. Bearing in mind I just turned 28 and I'm sitting here in my comfy trousers and slippers :D

I'm looking for a sensible bike after my little "incident" yesterday and this seems to tick all my boxes.

bought first BeeEmm in 90, at age 23. Have had 20 since. QED, methinks......

actually, for the first time since 1990, I'm BeeEmm less - a temporary interlude, I assure you - and am faffing about on an 05 H-D Road King Custom. Frickin' hilarious, btw....

K1200GT in the pipeline for next year. One should always have a BeeEmm in the stable, dontchaknow...........most of mine were old K's, then R's, to include GS's, 1100/1150/1200, and RT's of 1100/1150. Not gone on the look of the RT12 though........

Oh, a gaggle of F's, too.

I don't go in for this bike snobery thing that "some" BMW / Harley drivers have. I buy a bike because I like it , not a fashion accessory.

I have a lovely girlfriend so I don't need a chick magnet any more ;)

btw, I'm no snob, either. I also have an '87 Vespa PX125 which I love at least as much, if not more, than the 'nice stuff'. Likewise my 89 RGV250K - now 16 years with me.

Yeah, 20 bmw's in 17 years, means a blow up rate of >1 per anum :D

    Not a chance.

I would rather spend a ridiculous amount of money on a Italian bike than a BMW.

Personally, I admire the K1200 purely for doing something "innovative" by making something actually different (fast). Another one I "like" (I use the term loosely) is the Boxxer cup R1200S. I don't like many of the other BMW's.

I would rather spend that kind of money on two good jap bikes, you would also be getting double the reliability over the Italian bikes.

tbh, that's not bad, but not a bargain.........new bikes cheaper in Germany, but depreciation is slower, too........

True, but this thread is talking about "wasting" money.

In that regard, I would rather waste it on an Aprilia, than a BMW.

In fact, I would rather buy a Triumph triple and have it blow to bits, than buy a BMW.

In that case it would definitally waste it on a Ducati rather than a Bmw.

no, simple logic: it's cheaper than servicing it and buying tyres !! And I liked different colours, or a nice spec came up (one came with MiniDisc etc fitted), then wanted light, simple -got an F. First trip to Dublin from Galway, in December, sorted that - back to a K then. Then hated the K's bobbing/weaving thing at speed, so went to R's. Then newer R's. Then GS's....then.....

    oh, and I'm fickle.

    Like, very.

My last RT depreciated 3k in just over 3 years. That's bloody cheap motoring. Once you get the first good one, it's easy to keep on top of it. The first one is a killer, though, just gathering it.

Well, that's what I keep telling myself about the RK I just spent Charlie McCreevy's money on........... :o

Might head up there soon. To be honest I'm looking for a bike with a shaft, decent amount of thorque and 3 disk breaks. The BMW fills all these requirements and myself and the missus like the look of it.

Unless someone can recommend something else ?. I have a while before I buy one as I need to sell my W650 first.

Jealousy? I dunno. Whether you like it or not, they have a rep, and there is a (minority???) of BMW Bikers who think that everyone else is below them because they can afford the BMW badge.

Like I said, personally, I don't like the value for money aspect of them. I have no doubt that technically the k1200r is a beast, and yes Ewan and Charlie got across the world on a GS, but, so did yer man on an R1, at a fraction of the cost, and with less damage (it seemed).

BMW have a very very good advertising department, and they have a certain segment of the bike market guaranteed. It just so happens that many "bikers" feel that "real" bikers don't see EmcG and CB on TV and decide that because they have a 530, they can buy a RT, and get the "out of my way, I'm a biker damn it" attitude.

Personally I enjoy annoying BMW bikers who think that their bikes handle so well, and are so quick, but yet there is some crappy jap SV keeping up with them.

So its an "us and them" thing !!!

Anyone that knows me knows that I love Jap bikes and have a thing about retro and 70's Jap bikes. But I have the greatest respect for BMW's as well. They've been making bikes for over 80 years now, a lot longer than any other Jap manufacturers.

I wouldn't class them any better or any worse than their Jap counter-parts. Admittedly there are a lot of "new money" Irish that buy BMW's and think they are buying into a lifestyle and are better than everyone else. I've met people with Harley's and Ducati's (not Sutty ;)) who think the same.

Maybe. I think it is more an us and them thing with the people that don't ride BMWs having the problem.

I think a lot of riders, when they see someone on a bmw, assume they are a snob. I am sure there are a lot that are but I have met a lot that aren't.

TBH I find the worst snobs to be cruiser riders. I did a few miles on mainland Europe over th weekend and got waves or nods from all bikers except those on crusiers. Harley riders seem to be the biggest snobs.

It would be the other way around if the SV rider was going out of their way to zoom past the BMW rider to make a point of how quick their bike was.

However, as the rider who generally is keeping to themselves, only to find that they are being "prooven" against, then, it wounds the BMW driver's pride more than the SV.

KTric, I think it is an "us and them" thing in so far as some bikers are concerned.
Particularly because of the "new money" BMW bikers.

It is not something I would be concerned about in the slightest, because I am not an Us and Them type biker, but you asked what the reason behind the BMW bike thing.

And to be fair to you, you are not looking at the top of the range BMW, no offence mind, but that bike is less likely to attract the Cappucino maker/Peasant button jokes than other models in the BMW stable.

Oh, and as for the heritage of BMW bikes, to the Us and Them brigade, that started with Ewan and Charlie ditching KTM for the GS's.

At the end of the day, it's your bike. You afforded the BMW badge, not me. If I feel like I have to prove myself to you, then it is my loss not yours. Similarly, if you feel that you need to prove your BMW badge to me, then don't be sad if/when it is matched by what is a lower class of bike.

(the 'you' and 'me' in the last paragraph is the generic BMW owner and non BMW owner, not any one particular person.)

I have nothing against BMW riders however not a single one of them has ever replied to my waves/nods... :o

And if it's because they think they are too good to do so because they are riding a bike with a BMW badge well I think that's the saddest thing in the world... I mean how sad must your life be if you think that way? No... I think they're all normal bikers but they just don't see me because they're too old :p

A snob is "a person regarded as arrogant and annoying". They come in all shapes and sizes, these arrogant and annoying people. Snobs can be a small clique of people who believe they are better than anyone else, or a small clique of people who resent others because of what they themselves don't have (historically a noble title).

So you don't have to own a bmw to be a snob, although I'm sure it helps.. ;)

    A snob is entirely subjective.

A person that is a loathed snob to me could be an envy in someone else's eyes.

BMW drivers, seem to happen to have been caught in the Union of snobbery in many other marques riders' eyes.

a qualified bike mechanic, having trained and studied in the UK, I can tell you that there's nothing difficult about working on Bee Emms. Some special tools make life easier, but neither more nor less than any other bike, these days..... Now, changing the plugs on a VFR or new gen Fireblade.........don't get me started.

An R1100R is very easy to work on. An RT would be a bit more, mainly due to taking off the plastic every time, but the mechanic's are the same. GS' are somewhere in the middle.

Yes, new Bee Emm's are expensive, so what? If he's found one in his price range, well then it obviously..........isn't.

I was using a dictionary definition. It's a clear form of snobbery to look down on others because of the brand of bike they own.

Look lads, I was looking for some info on the bikes, not to start an argument.

I know the whole snobbery thing can get some bikers a bit hot under the collar, but this thread is getting a bit silly.

okelydokely - back to the topic.

Grand bike, only rode an R850R - arguably a bit 'sweeter', but obviously not as quick, either. Mind you, it'd be cheaper, too.

I had a loan of an r1150r for two days.. Compared to the SV1k and the 12GS I found it a little gutless, but it was a road test bike, so had probably been thrashed pretty thoroughly by the time I got it.

You should try Maddocks for a test ride as well. I wouldn't buy a second-hand bike there, as the prices are not comparable to picking up the bike in Germany if that's a viable option, but see if you can take one for a test spin anyway..

I'm going to head up to Joe Duffy's soon and have a look at the 2 they have.

my main beef about bmw's is the price ... mad

I'd agree with that, on both counts: Harleys are the most annoying bikes on the planet and drivers just behind that; BMWs are excessively expensive - eg comparing the Triumph Tiger new with the GS1200, to get basically the exact same spec (ie same bhp, heated grips, luggage etc) you pay BMW 5,000 euros more ... That's a hefty difference in price ...

But some of the BMW models are very classy and they've really improved the options in the last few years and been very innovative (eg with bikes like the F650). I've also had a fair few good chats with BMW riders at lights (though not, for some reason with GS riders???).

I had a 01' BMW R1100R today for an hour on loan from Joe Duffy in Finglas. Nice ride, very comfy, but my pipe kept blowing out and my slippers kept falling off.

    The search continues ......
