I've just noticed at http://www.goreyskateclub.com they mention there's already a conc slab being poured to take the ramps. Has anyone got any updates on the ramps it self, have they been delivered, install, when is it due?

I live in phibsboro so pretty close to cabra, unfortunatly in up the country now for a few days or i'd take a spin up and have a look.

Does anyone know what kind of budget was spent on each skatepark in total or broken down as ramps, surface, fencing. If the ramps alone cost less than 70,000 there might be a chance of Ballincollig going down this route.

I just got back from the park.

Good news is: it should be ready for the end of the month.

Bad news is: No bikes alloud

I asked one of the parkwarden who was working nearby and he told me, its a skatepark - skateboards only, no bikes. Bikes wreck the ramps,he mentioned someone broke into it recently which he seems to think where bikes (who done damage?), if this was you, stay the **** away from it till it's finished! only a few more weeks.

I didnt bother reason with him about it as he prob has no say, better to take it up with the leisure centre.

Wreckless: i got a few pics, nothing great, i cant get them uploaded at the min cause of a really bad wireless connex. I'll keep trying should have them up tomorrow the latest.

    Jozi

EDIT: Just to remind all of whats meant to be here:
    http://www.goreyskateclub.com/images/John%20Paul%20II%20cabra%20skatepark%20dublin.jpg
It looks much smaller on site, all the ramps are the same i think.
Finally a mini ramp, not as big as i would have hoped :( it's got a extension on 1 side pitty they didnt leave it all at the higher level.
The ramps looked like that where coated with somehting like grip tape, they where not smooth anyway.
What it skates like we will see, was hoping to be using it on the bike but my rollerblades maight come out of semi retirement for it!

EDIT2: Picture a little big, replaced with link

Are they metal surface ramps I see.Black metal in the hot sun equals unskatable/rideable surface.

Jaysus it took years to get ANY type of public park built in this country! Will it take yet more years for the councils to realise modular is Sh1t?
Anyway, has anyone got a street address for this place?
    Cheers

It's at Pope John Paul II park, just off the Ratoath Road for the main entrance or the Nephin Road for the side entrance. Went up and had a look at it yesterday. The layout actually looks like it will be alot of fun although some of the 1/4's look to be a tad on the mellow side. Spoke with the guy in Parks Departmentthats in charge of putting the park in place yesterday (I work in a different department of the council) and he was saying they are hoping for an openning date of May the 14th.

No bikes that sucks.Bushy is a skatepark and bmx are allowed!!
    Lucan doesnt allow bmx either.
Maybe we should call on the councils to provide bmx only parks and inline only parks and segragate our community even more??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭wideangle

Then they would have to provide three parks instead of one, maybe this would make them happy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 607 ✭✭✭Kenjd

Well said wideangle! Although I have only ever skateboarded I never got into this whole bmx vs boards vs inline bullsh1t! BMX looks great fun! must try it some day!! And on the petitions for parks that dont allow bmx's I bet a lot of bmxers signed it!
Did you try and ride lucan and were refused???
Oh yeah, pete4130 any chance of clueing the council in to the disadvantages of modular?? although we tried with Monkstown and its like p1ssing into the wind!

Not exactly,I know a few riders who went their and saw a sign saying no bikes or bmx allowed.I'd stil
ride it if it was quiet, but I'd take off the pegs first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭wideangle

I used to skate, but ever only downhills.Tricks were around but noobody knew how to do them!!I still use a skateboard for filming riders now and again.I was allways better on a bike, still cannot ollie, but could allways bunnyhop on a bike.I have respect for skaters and inliners for what can be achieved and I hope they have respect for bmxers aswell.

bmxs and lucan dont go well at all.the park is e wrong design to suit for bikes.ive bin in the park when bikes were there and its a dissaster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭wideangle

Freestyle built Lucan and they are set to build Corks first concrete park..and it better be suitable for bikes when it is finished.
And before anyone asks, yes we were consulted about the design and layout, skaters, bladers and bmx riders approved the design submitted. :D

It doesn't exist yet (Maynooth) and by all accounts, if the Cllr. thats pushing it gets his way, it'll be an Argos plastic ramp set.

well I hope they listen better than the people who built bushy. we had some great stuff lined up for around the bowl in bushy and they listened to us, altered their designs to accommodate it... then never put anything good in!! lol.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 149 ✭✭JahEerie

Unfortunately Beks it came down to the money.
The builders (Airspeed) fully intended to put more 'street' stuff in,
but the council couldn't make the budget stretch far enough.

Personally, I'm stoked with Bushy - but since I'm local & we've been petitioning for a park since the '80s I suppose I would be ;)

At least we've got some choice now
    - find da park ya like & get stuck in!

why does nearly everyone find modular ramps to be bad? whats wrong with them? some good reasons here dont just be cool and say that they just are,
modular concrete aswell,(swords) people are complaining about the modular concrete, whats wrong with it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 149 ✭✭JahEerie

Its just that a well-designed in-situ (as in concrete, puropose-built) is better.
This opinion comes from all of us who've been skating/Biking for 20+ years
    - in skateparks all over the world.

Ya may have heard of Marseilles (Prado), Livingstone (Scotland), Malmo (Sweden) &/or dozens of parks in the states - especially in Oregon (Newberg/Aumsville/Burnside, etc, etc)

Can ya name ONE modular park that's known around the world?

Because 'modular' parks are cheaper, misinformed councils often go for them.
In actual fact a more expensive 'in-situ' park is usually a better investment, as it lasts much longer & it will actually encourage more skaters/bikers to get into these sports.
    Its called sustainability.
Bushy/Lucan/Gorey/Greystones - they all got it right.

    Oh yeah, one other thing:
MODULAR PARKS ARE EASY TO REMOVE!

Just watch what happens when governments change / there are problems at modular parks - they can disappear overnight.
They can't do that with solid concrete.

If WE don't try to have some influence on these parks, we'll end up with crap.

    Your decision: Modular or In-situ?

    JohnBoy

sounds good to me, i do prefer concrete, smoother and will be there forever,
just seeing people complain instantly when they see that a park is modular annoys the cr*p out of me. have they even skated it? maybe but some havent,
    cheers for the reply,

the mini ramp looks like it could be fun to skate other than that i cant see this park surviving one winter

The reason why people complain is because they're all the same. Skate the Cabra park, then skate the Tullamore one or any other GBH abortion. Same 7ft transitions, super mellow pyramid, etc. Same deal with Skatestone and their modular concrete - the vert wall in Swords is identical to the one in Coolmine. All the transitions are the same, all the angles are the same and dimensions in the rest of the park are the same, just different layout.

And all these cloned obstacles are largely sh.ite to begin with. Now do you see the problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,944 ✭✭✭pete4130

Who has actually gone up and seen the ramps in person? Probably very few people who are saying they are bad considering they don't even know where Cabra is.
I've been up several times on my way by to check them out the set up looks good, if not a little tight for space in the middle. I actually work for the council and did the initial survey for the park and asked the preson in the Parks dept responsible for it why they chose metal ramps and they did make sense. We'd all love concrete or wooden parks but its not going to happen for lots of reasons in Cabra.

i dont see a problem with the skatepark but i see your problem, stop complaining! (not you in person but people who are just the typicall bull**** teenagers just moaning and groaning about how it could be better)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,944 ✭✭✭pete4130

I do work for the council but nothing to do with Parks department. My suggestins wer eput across on a personal level to the guy in charge who is a sound guy. He did take my suggestions on board with regards to concrete and wood/skatelite and forwarded them onto GBH, who in all fairness had some valid pioints to argue back with. One reason why wooden ramps will not work in Cabra is because they would simply be burnt. The childrens play area beside the park has already had an attempt to burn it down already with local thugs pullig up the expensive rubber flooring and trying to tie it to the play structures and burn it. Do you really want to give them some wood to set onfire?
One of the reasons they didn't opt for concrete was the park in Cabra is an attempt to regenerate the area and one option they had was to put in a skatepark rather than another all weather pitch (which is the easier option as these are harder to burn down). Concrete wasn't chosen for the ramps because if the skatepark doesnt work out for whatever reasons, it being modular means it can easily be removed and replaced with another amenity.
I hope this goes someway to explain why the use of steel ramps was used.
Skateparks are a new concept here in Ireland. The reality is that the money for them in the city centre area will always tend to go towards the more socially disadvantaged areas in an attempt to regenerate them for the future.
Hopefully once the novelty wears off in Cabra it should be relatively hassle free. Entry into the Cabra skatepark can only be gained through the sports centre complex too which should keep out any undesireables.

That's the problem. A metal ramp park will never, ever attract the same number of users or level of enthusiasm or international prestige than a concrete park. Have a look through the many topics here about Lucan, Greystones and Bushy Park - do you see people organising trips to Tullamore or Galway in the same way as Van City? Nope. Do you see people gushing about a metal ramp park in the same way as they do for any of the main concrete parks? No.

GBH don't give a shi.t if the park is taken out in 2 years time. They've got their money and they've run. The result is that the skatepark is seen as a white elephant and no further parks get built in the near future. Go on the Sidewalk forums and do a search about GBH and you'll find out just how shady they really are and the level of justified hatred and contempt for them in the UK.

Just got of fthe phone to the parks dept in the council here. Cabra Park is now open. Opening hours are as follows:

    Sat-Sun - 10am - 5pm

    Helmets needed of course.

I have a sneaky suspicion your a biker to and can prob tell me if they allow bmx-ers in the park?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,944 ✭✭✭pete4130

Yeah, I ride bikes. Went up today for a roll around 6pm....kids all over the place (the sports complex not the skatepark). Filled out the membership form, its free in as long as you have helmet, knee and elbow(?) pads. I was told it was packed and it turned out to be literally no more than 10 kids so it was empty. Then they said they'd find somewhere for me to put my bike....they aren't running bike sessions yet, they are going to be seperate and should be organised in a few days hopefully.

To be honest with the workers up there, they are really sound. They just seemed a little lost on how to run a skatepark. I'm sure its like nothing they've ever had to deal with before so in all fairness to them they are doing their best. It'll take them a while to get used to how things work at a skatepark. Plus they have to deal with about a hundred kids coming in asking questions and heckling them about God knows what.

You have to get in through main reception so there should be no undesireables in the park.

    Pete.
