Dodgy Hamstrings!!

    Was training friday night and hamstring got a bit tight - stopped straight away and iced when I got home. Was a bit stiff saturday but is ok now, i'd say I have strained it or maybe slightly torn it - have been icing and looking after it since. Anyone know of any lotion or cream for hamstings??

    You could try some muscle rub but other than that it's rest and ice.

    I would say the chance that you tore it was minimal.

    If it's fine after 2 days, and there's no brusing then I'd say with the upmost certainty*** that it's not torn.

    I use the "hurt -- injured -- ****ed up" scale to asses my injuries. You barely sound hurt from what you've posted.


    ***I'm not a medical professional, nor do I claim to be. And obvously without seeingthe injury first hand it's impossible to be 100% sure it's not torn.

    Same happened me during training recently. Got a little bit tight, then was okay for the next week or two. Had a game there and went to clear the ball and I just felt it going. Still sore but there's no bruising. This going to be a few weeks job?

    Have you tried stretching it?

    It has to be a serious bad tear if there is bruising.

    There may be a mild tear present without bruising.

    You are better off to get it checked out by a professional, get treatment and a tailored stretching/strengthening programme. We cannot grade the injury and recommend a treatment without seeing it.

    Hamstring strains can take anything from 1-6 weeks to heal properly depending on the severity

    Okay guys, I haven't played in about 2-3 weeks since I hurt mine on the field and I've noticed that there is a nice little bruising patch on the lower hamstring. I presume I should lay off it another while yet?

    Go see a professional preferably an accredited sports physiotherapist. From my limited knowledge (coming from personal experience of multiple hamstring strains) the advice given here has been misleading at best. Again from my personal experience,(this is what I understood from being told by a physio) when a hamstring muscle tears it will leave a space that will be filled by scar tissue, this will give the misleading feeling that your hamstring is fine until you really push it again, most probably resulting in an even bigger tear. Your scar tissue needs to removed by a professional using friction, and then the muscle needs to be slowly built back up over a period of weeks using specialised exercises. Again from what I know it should never take less than 3 to 4 weeks under intense physiotherapy for a hamstring tear to heal properly. Don't take my word though go see a pro.

    agree with the above.
    for example, the hamstring problem could well be a symptom of an underlying back problem.

    get it checked out to nip it in the bud and prevent chronic problems.

    if you do go to a physio, use a chartered one.
