Are there less movie channels than we had.?

Not that it matters that much if there are, just be less repeats!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,192 ✭✭✭norbert64

hehe, was just about to ask what those silly promos were all about.

Have to say though, I quite like the seperation by genres.

I do like the addition of the +1 channel as I often miss the start of a film. I also like the seperation of genres.

Lets see how many repeats we see :)

I have heard that the channels will be split into 2 packages. Package 1 subscribers will receive Comedy, Family, Classics and Modern Greats whilst Package 2 subscribers will receive Action/Thriller, Drama, Sci Fi/Horror and Indie. Sky Movies Premiere and Sky Movies Premiere+1 will be available for both subscription packages
    301 Sky Movies Premiere 16.00 to 02.00 (10 hours)
    302 Sky Movies Premiere+1 17.00 to 03.00 (10 hours)
303 Sky Movies Comedy (24 hours)
    304 Sky Movies Action/Thriller (24 hours)
305 Sky Movies Family (24 hours)
306 Sky Movies Drama (24 hours)
    307 Sky Movies Sci-Fi/Horror 16.00 to 04.00 (12 hours)
308 Sky Movies Classics (24 hours)
309 Sky Movies Modern Greats (24 hours)
    310 Sky Movies Indie 16.00 to 04.00 (12 hours)

I think there are a reduction in hours there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

    It's a serious reduction.

I can see myself canceling my movie packages if that's the way it's going.

If Jungleboy is right, then that would make the movie package less appealing, since you need to subscribe to both Movies Pack 1 and 2 to avail of the Premiere channel.

Jungleboy, have you a source for the information?

I like the breakdown to genres. Don't like the fact that we are losing both Sky cinema channels and that there content is being merged into the Classics & Modern Greats channels. Also the overall channel hours have been reduced. All for the same price as before.

Also, I am not sure that I like the fact that the Sky Premiere channel is going to show the same 5 movies at the same times every day for 7 days. Makes it faily pointless to have a +1 channel.

I've already cancelled. On principle I don't think it's worth keeping for such a reduction in hours without even a nominal reduction in price! I don't care if all 5 movies on the Premiere channel are first runs, in my opinion five movies a week does not equal a movie channel! Hopefully they'll lose enough subscribers due to this that they'll have to improve things.

The same 5 movies all week?

    Are Sky gone mental?

I actually think that is an ok idea... I very rarely get to see enough of the new movies on Sky Movies. At least this way they will be airing all the time so I should be able to find a convenient time.

I`m willing to give this a chance, even though their is a reduction in hours, if the movie that I want to see are on at a more convenient time I will be happy.

Isn't this the same failed concept that FilmFour did when they were still a premium channel? I think they called it FilmFour Weekly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Yes, this is what Film 4 weekly consisted of. I do not see why Sky are doing this seeing as a lot of their customers are using a PVR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,201 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

exactly and if anything they're trying to increase the takeup of Sky+/HD boxes.

No doubt there'll be the usual price increase to pay for these changes soon enough as well.

Does that mean that the films listed for channel 301 will change tomorrow? What happens if I have one on the current EPG set to record on Sky+?

    They all change @ 6am.

    so it's done then.

not exactly the best change ever, but I do quite like the fact that they're now showing high rated flix earlier, with the pin of course. :D

What was the point in them listing movies on the EPG which were not going to be shown?

Just after looking at Sky.com and Jungleboy was right.

You need to subscribe to Sky Movies MIX (1+2) to avail of Sky Movies Premiere

There's one due soon enough, as for what excuse they'll use this time God only knows

If you don't like it then cancel. It's the only way Sky will know. Sky wont need to use an excuse to hike up the prices if people are still willing to pay.

Here is another Sky Cancellation. At the driop of a hat they have reduced the worth of the full package. First there was the requirment to enter in pin numbers to watch certain movies. This screwed up recording said programs if you were using a DVD recorder(or vhs) to set recordings for times that you would not be there. Guess what, if you got Sky+ you got around this. Now they reduce the content of the full package and in doing so are showing movies on the HD channel that heretofore were available in standard content but not anymore. So now to really have the full use of Sky you need Sky+(+HD). Sky are great at giving freebies to ppl who are not customers, its a pity they did not see fit to treat their paying customers with a bit of the same instead of going the other way.

is it just me or does this change seem to result in really bad movies and as already stated much less time

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 811 ✭✭✭donhughberto

So without sky+ movies (12,15,18) are usless to every working man. I work all day and it would be good to record some of this stuff, damn. Must be a push to get sky+. Whats the cost these days for exisiting customers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,201 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

    €66 now for the lot.

I take it it's not just me then that finds it harder to find something worth watching since this change? I have to say I kinda resent paying again for movies I paid Sky to see years ago.

Think it (and Sky Sports) will be going..

  • Moderators, Regional North West Moderators Posts: 19,172 Mod ✭✭✭✭byte

Sky have to use the PIN system to show the 15, 18 rated movies during daytime.

Before that, these films were only shown after 8pm AFAIR.

What concerns me is that a lot of the Premier movies are shown in Dolby Stereo only - even though they are advertised as DD.

    Very annoying!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,201 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Well I've had the full Sky package since around 1992 - first cable, then analogue satellite, then Digital, now Sky+

In that time I've almost always been able to find something worth watching on the movie channels at peak times. When Digital launched, the repeats (obviously) increased and things were a bit harder to find, but I still managed.

Since this changeover however I'm finding it a very different story. Even though I have Sky+ I'm not interested in pre-recording things all day while I'm at work.

I like to come home, stick on the telly and find a decent film or three to watch between say 8 and midnight. The whole idea of this multichannel thing was supposed to be greater choice I thought?? If we are all supposed to just pre-record now, why not go back to the basic 3 we had in the analogue days?

Now we have less channels, less hours and what appears to be a very obvious attempt to push people to upgrade (again) to HD (by how the programming on the movie channels is split since the change) - something I'm in no rush to do at the moment.
There's also less choice insofar as previously you might have had 2 or 3 comedies/action films etc worth watching in the same 8-11pm slot - now you're stuck with whatever is on that one genre channel.

I resent paying the same €66 for this that I paid last month for a lot more. I also resent paying again to see movies that I paid Sky for up to over a decade ago in some cases. And I hear that they're planning another/the usual subscription increase in September???

This change is purely to cut Sky's costs in my opinion, and is nothing to do with improving things for the customer - despite the slick advertising campaign!

I'll be cancelling the movies next month, and the sports along with it. The value for money has been eroding for years since we went Digital and when combined with the annual price hike, this - for me anyway - is just one step too far.

I’m also very disappointed with the “improvements” changes to Sky movies.
Its like the loop the loop ice lolly or the Cadburys cream egg, they get smaller and the price increases.

Take the listings for sky premier ……Saturday 7th - Friday 13th April

    4pm - Zathura: A Space Adventure
    6pm - Half Light
5.40pm - Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
    10.35pm - Fun With Dick & Jane
    12.10am - Everything Is Illuminated

Every night at 10.35pm and 11.35pm (premier+1) - Fun With Dick & Jane quickly becomes “No Fun With Dick & Jane”

They should at least give it a mix up every day, for example…

    4pm - Zathura: A Space Adventure
    6pm - Everything Is Illuminated
    5.40pm - Fun With Dick & Jane
10.35pm - Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
    12.10am – Half Light

I find myself watching movies on other stations, more and more.

Well just rang and cancelled the sports, movies and dropped to 2 channel mixes.
Even though I've Sky+, I dropped the recording functions as well as there's a lot of +1 channels within that and it's not worth paying an extra €15 for the privilege of using a feature that SHOULD be free.

I raised a lot of the points I made earlier and others in this thread, but it sounded like she's sick of hearing it this week :D - funny enough she didn't even argue or try to get me to change my mind.

Anyway, price now reduced from €66 to €21.50, so I'll be using the difference to get anything I want on DVD I reckon.

What exactly is sky movies ''indie'' supposed to be for????
It's another reason I cancelled. I've no interest in several of the "genre" channels they've set up now. The way they've setup Premiere to repeat the same movies all week at the same time, AND add a +1 channel (when they're clearly trying to get everyone to move to Sky+/HD anyway) is just taking the piss I think.

I wonder will there be a quick change back to the previous format?? Like how they dropped the idea of DOGs on the movie channels after only 3 days in the 90s after huge numbers of complaints. That was a bit different too though - I think this latest move will cost them significant amounts of money.

Digitally Overlayed Graphics (or words to that effect) - basically channel logos on screen... like on most channels these days.

In the early 90s, Sky added a (admittedly fairly discreet) logo to the bottom right of the 3 movie channels. It lasted all of a weekend from what I recall, never to be seen again. :p

at this stage I would give anything to go back to the 32 channel pan european tv we had many years ago on Sky Analogue, there may have been less channels but they actually showed more than what digital shows now and for a fraction of hte price. Sky's movie channels and MTV I think have suffered the worst since digital changeover, both are crap now and I never watch them anymore.

hmmm, cheers for the link. Have to disagree though, everyone calls them bugs or burn ins here. Now it's used to specifically reference graphics that are added in playout and pres rather than in studio ctrl which I guess would make them a subset of DOGs. Again though have never heard any on screen graphics called a 'digital on screen graphic' it seems a redundant term.

I've only seen here on ICDG or other TV mailing list or forums ever referred to as DOGs.

Maybe your manager is American ;)
