Alright. Since the auld middle aged spread is starting to make it self felt I've decided it's time to get myself back into a bit of regular exercise.

I'm planning on making a start on this at home (location doesn't really make joining a gym very convenient).

First off - I'm making myself a diet plan - eating better foods, dumping the junk etc.

Second - Starting to do free weights to do something about the stick arms I got me. Any advice on dumbbells to buy, etc

Third - the stomach. Now I'm not under any illusions about having a six-pack in a month or anything but definitely, in addition to dropping some weight, need to tone up the stomach. Which do people think is better? Just starting with sit-ups, the way God intended man to exercise, or buying one of those Ab-shaper/rocker/roller/whatever jobs and using them?

    hello and welcome

firstly diet, read the stickies there is some really good advice in there for your diet and maybe think about setting up an account on www.fitday.com, because it counts exactly the calories you are eating.

and i would recommend that you buy an exercise ball, i have one and they are brilliant especially for sit-ups

    hope this helps

    Thanks Catherine.

Have been browsing through the stickies alright. Some interesting stuff up there.

Excercise ball, eh? Isn't that a bit... girlie?

no its not, loads of guys in my gym use them and they are really good for your back, but you can use them for more than sit-ups, they are really versatile. and anyway you are exercising at home- no one will see you.

exercise balls are brialliant tools!! i think everyone should use them from time to time. they force you to encorperate core muscles when doing exercises on them and help build them. i use the ball for ab work and chest press stuff aswel

Yes - get an exercise ball. You can do your stomach exercises on it, plus a lot of stuff you would do on a bench.

e.g. do dumbbell presses on a ball whilst keeping legs really close to together. This will work on your balance and tone stomach.

Would you believe TESCO have them at the mo.

I pulled something in my back at xmas but its ok now but Im afraid to use one in case I do something to damage it again. Is there any links to decent diagrams on how to use the ball correctly?

Buy two. Put your two arms on one, put your two feet on the other. If you can give me 3 push-up's I'll pay for the darned things. Then we'll see how girly they are!!! ;)

agreed!!! in fact if you do this, i wil personally eat two of them after you do this, and video it AND post it here for everyone to see.
and tbh, if there are any other "girlie" products that provide as good a workout as this, i would b amazed

My reference to the exercise ball as girlie was obviously sarcastic.

I will try and purchase one and report back on my phenomonal progress.
