A very simple rabbit stew with home-made bread. Tres rustic.

A pork goulash inspired by a Jamie Oliver offering some weeks back. Made it the previous night and the aroma as it warmed up was fantastic.

Home-made pizza lashed with tomato sauce, fresh basil and ground black pepper, sliced onions, peppers, mushrooms and ham and topped with a little mozzarella. And a big salad.

T-bone steak, mashed spud, mashed carrot & turnip with gravy (thanks again to Mrs Billy!).

A moussaka with beef mince (no lamb unfortunately). Made all the sauces myself and twas lovely. There are 2 portions in the freezer now for later.

While I was making the moussaka, I roasted some figs in the oven and drizzled them with honey and had them with cheese for starters.

Bit of an idiot n00b question folks.

Does ginger need to be 'peeled' before use, or do I just go for it with the grater?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,449 Mod ✭✭✭✭Mr Magnolia

I peel mine anyway, it's recommended that you do.

    Edit/ How quick am I!

    Thanks Mr. M :)

    Very quick indeed.

TBH, when grating I don't peel it. The skin doesn't go through the grater and you're left with a lump of it.

    Absolutely delish :)

I could have done with the onion a bit smaller though, but I really enjoyed them.

They smell lovely when cooking, and taste great.

I made the ones with the ginger by the way.

Couldn't find scallions tough, so I just went with mashed spuds, fried tomatos and gravy.

I froze three of them for later.

    Thanks very much.

    You are more than welcome.
On the onion front - I'm a bit of a fiend for them (much to Mrs Billy chagrin).

Happy days - another satisfied customer! :)

As a complete aside, I utterly adore raw onion, especially with steak or perhaps some finely chopped spring onion on a bowl of chili, but my god when I eat them I'm tasting them for 48 hours afterwards. I think I'm getting old. :(

Occasionally, if I'm just cooking for myself I'll fry a nice lump of steak, make a thin gravy from the juices & have it with a thickly sliced raw onion (or two) & a couple of slices of Pat the Baker's finest white bread. Sheer heaven!

<3 onions. Made my little sister run out and buy a big bag of them last night when I realised we were out of them.

    Back O/T: Egg-fried rice.

Sunday/Monday night, Bacon, (steamed) cabbage, mashed and roast potatoes. I felt like some good traditional home cooking at the weekend. Fantastic.

Thai Red Chicken Curry, with extra Chili.

With Rice noodles and some Naan for the mopping up.

I cooked it slowly, about an hour and a half in the wok, and it was delish.:)

    Friday - Beef Goulash-type stewy-thing
    Saturday - Chicken Jalfrezi-type curry
Sunday - Grilled lamb chops, roasted spicy potato wedges & beans
Monday - Went to the chipper

Made monster pot of minestrone last night for lunch today. Mrs Billy will be doing boiled & baked ham with spuds & curly kale for dinner this evening. Leftover ham will be broken up & put in with the leftover minestrone for dinner Wednesday - just the thing to warm yourself up after bringing the kids around collecting on Hallowe'en.

Fish Pie. Disappointing - the cod had little flavour.
