Bebo is just a patethic popularity contest for illiterate attention seeking morons with too much spare time on their hands.

It's only use is staying in contact with someone who's number you've lost.

there was a report published there recently, i'll post a link if i find it, that indicated bebo is the prefered method of communication among Irish gay's, and in fact up to 38% of male users of bebo are in fact gay

If this is so and this report get's any mainstream media coverage then you could see a big drop in the amount of male user's of the site.

Ah here, bebo is just for fun:D It doesn't need to have a function! Its a great way of staying in touch with ppl, esp when they go travelling and its just a bit of craic.

Why ppl feel the need to over analyse it is beyond me!

It's funny how some of you have such hate for a website. So some people are twats on it? Some people are twats in general!

I tried to avoid it for years but eventually got sucked in, the only reason being I was moving from Cork to Maynooth and seeing as every single one of my friends was on it, it's a lot handier to keep in touch that way rather then constant ringing/phone credit.
Besides that, I think it's a piece of crap and I generally don't like it, I can't think of anything worse then keeping in touch with 99% of the people I went to school with and I keep it on private so that the only people that know my business are the people i want to know it!

For everyone saying its the best thing since sliced bread for keeping in touch over long distances, is email dead to you?

Why is that a bad thing? :p

I don't get people who have a link to their bebo pages in their sigs on boards though. Whats that all about? Why would you want people you don't know stalking your page?

talking on bebo is analogous to talking in a group in a public place, whereas talking via IM is a private chat.
People who prefer talking in big groups like leaving bebo comments. People who prefer 1 on 1 communication prefer IM.
Bebo is a highly effective tool for gossip-mongering.
All the points made so far are true to some extent too.
I know people who keep strangers on their friends list to appear more popular like some others have mentioned.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

Bebo is great, You can keep up to dat with someone without actually having to talk to them, just by having a look at their page. You can also stalk people which a huge number of people do.

Quite a few people I know who don't have a Bebo still check their friends' Bebo pages on the QT. Although they 'want their privacy' they're happy to check up on others.

What is the deal with all the bebo bashing?! Like serious, some people here need to get a life, is it really all that different to boards? People leave comments, people reply. It really is a magnificent invention that should be treasured as a means of communication and relationship developement. So what about the twats and the retards. There's twats and retards on boards too. So just get over it and let people have their fun without all this psycho-analysis.

It's funny to watch two Bebo users try to bitch about someone behind their back on eachothers' comment pages when all three parties have accounts and none are private. I've never encountered such stupidity before from 24+ year olds, and it is a thing of beauty and joy.

Am I the only one who doesn't know a single person with one of these pages?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,623 ✭✭✭dame

I have no problem using it as a way of reading blog from friends who are actually AWAY for a year and DOING INTERESTING THINGS, but I'm not on Bebo myself and I'd send them an email when I want to contact them, ask them questions, tell them news etc. I suppose you could sort of call that stalking(?) but they tell you where their page is and it's handier for them to post a blog there than send emails full of all the details and attaching pictures of their travels. Probably cheaper for them too when they're visiting an internet café somewhere exotic.

I hate it when people tell you they're on Bebo and you should do their quiz/look at pictures from the last great night out etc. Who cares!

    Here are some common messages people leave for others;

"Do my quiz.....do my quiz.....do my quiz....."
translation "I'm desperate to get loads of replies so I look cool and popular"

    "you still alive?"
translation "My bebo page hasn't gotten any comments for nearly a week  and I'm desperate for messages from people....so I look cool and popular"

    "I was sooo wasted"
translation "I am cool and popular"

    "such a hangover"
translation "I am cool and popular"

"just posted pics of last nite out"
translation "look at my page and leave a comment about how cool I am"

    "I'm such a slut"
translation "I'm so gorgeous and popular"

    Other slightly irritating things about bebo;

Attaching "the other half of me"-> "see somebody loves me/I have at least one actual best friend"

Calling a photo album "random sh1te" - if it's such sh1te why bother putting it there?

People using the blog part of the page as somewhere to copy and paste every forwarded email they receive.

People bringing cameras on nights out specifically to take pictures for bebo. Why can't they just let people relax without wondering when the camera weilder is going to take an unflattering or incriminating picture of them and post it up for the world to see?

Finally, do people realise that their future employers can google their name and the word bebo and read about all the times they were too hungover to go to work etc?

ok not sure if this is the right forum to be posting this in but there are so many! anyway, im doing an assignment on social networking sites, specifically bebo, and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on why so many people use the website while many others laugh at the idea and think users are just sad or childish? any thoughts would be appreciated :)

becuase it allows people to pretend to be something they are not.

If you think Bebo is popular you should see its share of the Social networking sites usage. Its in third has a poor 0.5% with facebook having 18% and myspace coming in first with 80%. So in reality bebo has nothing on the other two! Other networking sites about 10 of them make up the other 1.5%

Its really only huge in Ireland and the UK. How many mainland Europeans do you know who have an account on it? MySpace and Facebook are barely visible here, in college even when MySpace was at its height, only about 20% used it, and i doubt any of them do now.

I think the amount of traffic/messaging on Bebo is way down from last year.

Or else Ive declined in popularity......either way, Im just glad there arent as many pass this message on or your dick will turn green emails.

I deleted my bebo account 2 weeks ago and I hav'nt looked back. I have to say I began to really hate the way anyone could see what my girlfriend was saying to me and what I was saying to her. Some things should remain private. Now this is definately partly due to my own insecurities but I HATED when her ex-boyfriends constantly left messages on her page and wrote some horrible comments on some of her photos knowing that I would see them. Now I didnt blame her because she said that she wasnt replying to them but for me, just seeing them was enough to put me in bad form and frankly, upset me a few times. So I figured why put myself through that s*it when I can communicate with her in so many other ways.

    E-mail FTW...;)

To my mind, the huge popularity of Bebo amongst school kids is essentially rooted in A) narcissism and B) a desire for fame, or at least to be noticed by a wider audience than one would otherwise. Saying that it's handy for staying in touch with people and cheaper than texting is all well and good - I'd wager that this is coming from slightly older guys and gals - but Bebo hasn't suddenly gifted these technologies to the internet, it's just dumbed them down.

Anyway, as I was saying, the single biggest reason that Bebo is so popular amongst teenagers, and perhaps people in their early twenties too, is that people love indulging in themselves, promoting themselves, talking about themselves in the "public eye" and, obviously, furthering their image amongst their peers. Bebo's essentially tapping into the same rich psychological vein that televised reality TV talent shows have been plumbing for a few years now - look at me everybody! I'm great! I wanna be on the computer screen, I want people to look at pictures of me, I want people to read about my life. This is what I'm doing in school/college. This is how much I drank last night. This is my boyfriend. This is the definition of my existence, and it's better than yours.

Bebo provides cheap, narcissistic thrills. Uploading pictures of oneself, writing quizzes about oneself, detailing the miniutae of one's life - it's all nauseatingly self-centred stuff if you ask me.

    Oh and what he said!!!!
