I want this to be true, and also as awesome as it should be.

I just don't trust Sonic team anymore, not after the abomination that is the Sonic series these days.

Please god don't let them screw it up.

Well this has made my day. Off to play the original now.

i was saying to monkeyfudge yesterday, that if this comes true then you and me will go nuts all over the games forum.

    Nights was really something.

I love the level where the terrain actually warps when your character gets near it. I remember playing it first and wondering why there was ugly Playstation texture warping in a Sega Saturn game and then was amazed when I say it was actually the terrain warping I was gobsmacked. It really showed what the saturn was capable of in the right hands. It was really easy but it didn't matter since it was such a joy to play.

Some are saying that this might just refer to a VC release of the original.

Has this definitely been announced as a new version for the Wii?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

Never played a Nights game before.

I'm still kinda excited though if ye're getting this worked up about it :/

Hopefully it'll be a Wii version

It hasn't been definitely confirmed. As for it being a VC release I really doubt it. The Sega Saturn has really strange architecture and used Quads instead of Triangles as polygons, making it a notoriously difficult to emulate. Ever wonder why there are no retro compilations featuring Sega Saturn games? With the trouble Nintendo have with the N64 emulator I doubt they can get a Sega Saturn emulator up and running.

Never mind the size of certain Saturn games......not exactly friendly with Nintendo VC policy..
That rumoured external HDD could come in handy of course and/or playing direct from storage media (not likely to happen)..

I will buy the console this game shows up for (most likely Wii, which I already have)

I hope Sega make a proper sequel and don't mess with the old 3D/2D gameplay. Nights was perfect the way it was. I think Nighs would control extremely well with the wiimote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

the question is what style of control will they go for?

Personnally I'd perfer the nunchuck combo. So for the 3d parts (which might be nice to expand a bit more into a exploration element before going into uber cool acrobatic mode) you have the analog pad.

But also when in nights mode you can use the wiimote to make all the classic acrobatics and loops etc and the analog pad to actually move left or right (and also to aim the drill attack)

so yes Wii mote is good for nights...lets just hope they use it right.

NIntendo official magazine have this as a "big exclusive" in their next issue. well they havnt said this game but it's pretty obvious.

not that I know what the game is like as I have never even played a saturn but im still lookin forward to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Heard on a Wii Podcast (think it was Wii.TV) that the editor of Nintendo Official Magazine has confirmed that the teaser advert / big announcement was definitely NOT an April Fool's joke.

But he wouldn't say what the announcement was.. or that it related to a certain "Nights" sequel. Still, good to see the April Fool's joke outta the way (which still seems to be plaguing a lot of forums / blogs reporting this rumour)

oh and it will more than likely be a sequel as Saturn games are on their way to the VC which the original could be released on

The saturn VC games haven't been confirmed yet, and it's really doubtful given the size of Saturn games compared to the amount of storage space the Wii has.

saturn games werent that huge. and considering that they could get ocarina of time on there id say they could do this. and what lack of space? thats what the sd slot is for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

IIRC Ocarina of Time is only something like 16MB... from a quick google search, I can see that NiGHTS into dreams is just under 70MB, so while not huge, it is still a lot bigger than anything that you'd get on any of the other VC consoles.

Kind of true. Most saturn games had to use redbook audio so using MP3's would be a lot more economical. However even with the music files compressed the average Saturn game is about 300MB big. You could only realistically fit 1 saturn game on the built in memory unless it's one of the Taito F3 board conversions.

Also you really don't understand just how hard it is to emulate the Saturn. It is a 2 core machine with really complex architecture and Quads instead of the industry standard of triangles to display polygons. The best emulators run Saturn games barely playable on a high spec machine with lots of glitching. There has never been a Saturn game emulated by any company to run on another console (the PC saturn conversions by sega were programmed from scratch). With the state that the NES and N64 emulators that are on the Wii to consider, it's doubtful Nintendo would be able to pull off a working Saturn emulator.

So this rumour has been confirmed true..

Loads of mags will have it on their front cover next issue.
    All "exclusive" of course.

Not sure I get the big deal about this, I had never even heard of the original until a few months ago.

Are their that many fans out there??

The original was a fantastic game but is largely ignored since it came out at the end of the saturns life. There's been appeals for a sequel for ages. The original is almost a decade old.

Excellent game alright........looks a little rough around the edges now, but it was really different and the music was great to say the least..
I'd be happy with a barely touched version of the original on Wii..

    sweet jesus it looks good

    img.php?image=70068_nights1_122_460lo.jpg

    Info:
    - There's no official name yet.
    - A sequel wasn't made earlier because they didn't want to evolve the game graphically, they wanted to evolve it from a gameplay standpoint, make it more surreal. With the Wii they were given this chance, and they took it.
    - I think it says Sega will make the official unveiling at the beginning of April.
    - Two players mode.
    - Online (not discussed, it sounds like could be just WiiConnect24 and no online gameplay).
    - Nightopia revisited with more human characters, more enemies and bosses, more tricks and a bigger freedom of movements.
    - Sonic Team is doing the game.
    - Takeshi IIzuka is in charge, was the director of Sonic Heroes.
    - Wii exclusive, with no idea to port it over at the moment.
    - Nights will be officially revealed in April.

Sonic Team did a good job on Sonic Rush, even though we had to put up with all the annoying characters too...

typo...kotaku has the same quote a whopping 11 years...which makes me feel old cause I remember getting Nights on its release with the analog pad.

    Interesting if this was confirmed:
According to unconfirmed rumors, NiGHTS began its life for 360 and PS3, but was later moved to Wii.

I want credit for linking that poll on Sega's site the other month. The one that said "Vote NiGHTS!".

    That or cookies.

Some more details on features....it's using the weather channel!

    http://www.sega-europe.com/en/Game/561.htm

    http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/nights/

    * Three sets of Persona masks give the player new shape-shifting abilities and more ways to explore the world.

    • Dragon mask: Transforms NiGHTS into a huge dragon and makes him resistant to wind effects.
    • Dolphin mask: NiGHTS can change into a dolphin and explore under water.
    • Rocket mask: NiGHTS takes the shape of a rocket and travels at supersonic speeds.

    * There are seven fantastical dream worlds to explore and the unique environments of Nightopia introduce an extraordinary, magical world unlike any other.

    * Wii connect 24: Exchange items with friends via the network and change the scenery according to real-world seasons using the Forecast Channel.

Hmm, it doesn't really sound like the Nights I know and love. I think they are going to go third person with massive explorable 3D environments with this one and forgoe the excellent 2D gameplay of the original.

good news for me and retrogamer:

some tidbits of an interview recently made about nights 2:
First of all, just to relax the diehard fans, will the Wii version of NiGHTS be following the fundamental game mechanics of the original?
Takeshi Iizuka: For those loyal fans that have waiting 11 years for NiGHTS to return, I felt the need to keep the game concept fundamentally the same as the original so that it would be a reminiscent return to their past NiGHTS experience. This way, I could extend my thanks and appreciation for all those fans that waiting all this time for the sequel. To them, I want to say "Thank You" for without their support this project would not be possible. Additionally, we are planning expand on the original to include a variety of new gameplay mechanics that I hope fans new and old will enjoy.

ITS STILL 2D!!!! (mostly) I'm guessing/hoping that the new game features will feature mostly in the first part of each level (finding nights)
Can we expect any radical gameplay departures from the original?
Takeshi Iizuka: We found that original NiGHTS game was not "user-friendly" as it was often difficult for the player to figure out what to do or where to go next. The sequel is built around a dramatic storyline that will engage the player and guide them intuitively through the adventure.

My only fear here is that nights told a story perfectly without once using a bit of dialogue...I dont want dialogue or even captions in a nights game, nights perfected silent interactive story telling, something sonic team were excellent at (look at sonic 3 & knuckles).
Will the music in NiGHTS still change based on the mood of the Nightopians?
Takeshi Iizuka: We are very fortunate to have Mr. Hataya, the original music composer from the first NiGHTS game aboard creating the new soundtrack. Since the game structure is completely revamped as we added a lot more game volume, we realistically didn't expect to do the same things we did in the original NiGHTS. We like the mood-enhancing soundtrack feature very much and want to do something very special collaborating with Mr. Hataya. We promised that there will be a lot of new and exciting ideas for "Journey of Dreams".

best news i heard all week. Nights soundtrack was one of the best ever!
Will the original's wide range of moves be making a return - and will they rely on motion-sensing controls?
Takeshi Iizuka: Originally, NiGHTS (for Sega Saturn) was released with a very special 3D controller that intensified the flight experience. With the Nintendo Wii, I thought it would be a perfect chance to attempt to recreate that innovative flight experience once again. We're currently designing the game to be played with two control configurations. Our main focus is to design the game to be played with the Wii remote but for those gamers that are more comfortable using a more "traditional-style" controller configuration, they will able to plug the nunchuk into the Wii remote as well.

I'm more interested in the nunchuck combo then just the wiimote...mainly cause i dont see much oppurtunity for depth with the wiimote on its own, but loads for it combined with the nunchuck.
Grabbing enemies and throwing them around was often the solution to some of the original's more intense battles. Will we still be grabbing foes in the Wii version and if so how will the remote let us throw them around?
Takeshi Iizuka: Unlike other action games - like Sonic for example - where you run around, then stop and encounter enemies to progress through each level, NiGHTS attack schema is designed differently. We originally designed the gameplay around the joy and freedom of flight system which has made NiGHTS a unique gaming experience. The game rule has been expressively created so that touching the enemies is inherit in the design as it doesn't interfere with the natural feeling of NiGHTS' flight system. By "touching" the enemies, NiGHTS can encounter enemies utilizes his special abilities like Touch Dash or Touch Loop. The sequel will utilize the Wii remote to make these actions very intuitive so that the player can easily execute a wide variety of game actions.

    sounds good.
Will you be bringing back the 'A-Life' system?
Takeshi Iizuka: The A-life system was a very popular feature of the original NiGHTS game that we've love to include, but we're currently investigating all options.

Christmas NiGHTS cleverly employed the Saturn's internal clock to alter the game world, particularly the weather conditions. Any chance of the Wii Weather Channel being used for some similar effects?
Takeshi Iizuka: What's exciting about the Wii is that it has a lot of great functions that we would like to take advantage of...we have some really special surprises for all!

    And what about using Miis?
Takeshi Iizuka: The sequel is being designed around real human struggles. The story is about self-discovery and the belief in oneself. So, we're designing the game around human characters that interact with NiGHTS in the dreamworld of Nightopia.

Does the game use the game engine from Sonic and the Secret Rings?
Takeshi Iizuka: Journey of Dreams is being created from the ground-up and is running on a completely new engine engineered specifically for the Wii. We're finding that there are some very interesting graphical effects and processes that are being merged into our engine. We excited to see how far we can push the hardware this time.

Sonic and the Secret Rings seemed to take a few pages out of NiGHTS' book - putting Sonic 'on rails' for example - and did very well as a result of it. To reverse the situation, are you taking any inspiration from Secret Rings?
Takeshi Iizuka: The inspiration that drives us to make the sequel is appeasing the loyal fan base that has wanted to play a sequel to the original NiGHTS game. We want to make the best game possible so that not only our loyal fans will enjoy it but that we can introduce NiGHTS to a whole new generation of gamers that we hope will fall in love with it like so many have.

We particularly enjoyed facing off against the vicious cat boss Clawz in the original; will there be any giant cats in the sequel?
Takeshi Iizuka: We may not have big cats in particular in our sequel, but we are creating some really fantastic world of Nightmare and fascinating Nightmarens that I am sure you will all enjoy very much. I can't give you any real details, just that there will be a variety of gameplay to entertain you all.

We'd love to have been able to race through levels against friends in the original NiGHTS. Any chance of some multiplayer swooping in the Wii version?
Takeshi Iizuka: We don't have any real details about multiplayer functionality right now, but we are planning many new special features for the sequel.

The character NiGHTS has appeared in just about every Sonic Team game since the game's original release in 1996. There's clearly a lot of affection for the character within Sonic Team, so why the big wait in releasing a sequel?
Takeshi Iizuka: Ever since NiGHTS was released 11 years ago, I've always dreamt of making the sequel , and now I am able to deliver to those you how have patiently waiting so long, a new NiGHTS game! Over the years of my involvement of creating past Sonic titles, neither the market nor platforms seemed right in recreating the sequel...that is until Nintendo released the Wii. So now, it is my chance of saying thank you for all your loyalty and trust. I hope you will love "Journey of Dreams" as much we do making it!

and the little details which are only icing on the cake for me.

Please, please, please don't add story sections like the ones that have been slowly corrupting the Sonic games with pestilence since Sonic Adventure.

Other than that it sounds rather good. They really just need to make sure the game is as much a joy to control as the original and have the time trial replayability intact and they are almost there.

Do you ever stop and think - my God how gay are we? It's a bit embarrassing to be eagerly awaiting a release of a game in which we have to confront 'Nightmarens' from the dark land 'Nightmare' while flying around in a magical pixie world!

Ok ok...I admit I embarrasingly didn't have a clue what Sega NiGHTS was until this thread so I can't understand the hype about it!
