Just found this on the net,www.bootcampireland.com, anyone been to it? Seems to be pretty interesting - what you think - waste of time or a good way to get fit?!

Sick at the mo but I'm thinking about signing up for it next month..it doesn't seem too expensive...

if you think it would be something that you would actually enjoy I don't see any reason to see why it wouldn't be beneficial.

Money wise it is up to you whether you think it is good value. At €110 for 6 weeks (2 session a week) it works out at a minimum of just under €10 per session which isn't that cheap, and probably wouldn't be something that you would keep up all year round, so once you can find something else to supplement this for the rest of the year go ahead and enjoy yourself

well it would be in conjunction with the gym, just wondering would it be worth paying for when I'll be paying a personal trainer once a week too and the gym fees aswell...

It seems u can try it out for a session to see if you like it..I think I'll do that first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,407 ✭✭✭✭justsomebloke

well will you get better results then you would compared to spending that time in the gym, probably not.

Will you have a bit of a laugh doing something fun that you think you will enjoy thus re leaving the boredom of the same old routine in the gym while still being active, I don't know you are the only one who can answer that.

But if you can get a free session you might as well give it a shot see if you like it,

Seems bit dear for 1 hour a week. Why not just get your personal trainer to do circuit training out doors with you and maybe get a few friends along to.

Or just go to www.crossfit.com where you have world class information at your fingertips for free. ;)

tbh Im pretty sure he only works in the gym. So you think its expensive? Hmm...might give the trial a go and see how I get on. I really just want to have something else to do aswell as the gym, been trying to get into basketball again but I'd need coaching before I could go near a club..and I don't know how to go about that...

    Any ideas??

    Thanks for your help:D

10 euros a bit expensive - wont be broadcasting my prices then!

Well worth the try and i am sure it would be good craic

It doesn't mention Pheonix park on the website - will it be held here (would be very handy for me) as I would defo be interested.

Well i thought it was expensive considering you've to pay in a block. it seems if its raining and you dont want to go, u dont get ur money back. and it seems to just be circuits really. There isnt really much point paying that ONTOP of a personal trainer who charges 50 plus an hour ? is that what they usually charge? never got one.
Maybe he could go to the practice one and recruit people at it to come and train with him in a park for free. he could ask his personal trainer for the correct techniques etc .. hehe.
by they way sorry if op is female (cant remember as i write this post and too lazy to click back )

Yeah but your prices are for a one to one where as the bootcamp they have two guys just shout at you over a distance.

I remember the bootcamp thigns they used to provide a load of entertainment for me and friends when we were hanging about in the park.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭G86

    yes...the op is female!!

Well trainer is cheap - 30 yo yos. And he seems alot better than one I went to before for 50! I would'nt mind paying for the bootcamp if I enjoyed it though and the rain wouldn't bother me at all.

It takes place in a few different parks in dublin, says it on the site. Just email them for a list.

I'm gonna go for the trial in a month or so anyway! No harm in it :)
Just gotta try talk my mate into it now......:D

The guy I used to go to was a bodybuilder and advised me on diet supplements that I later found are banned in some countries and dangerous. He obviously knew his stuff and had me doing tough enough weight training but it just wasn't a road I wanted to go down.

Have had a chat with the guy Im starting with in a mth and he seems sensible abou diets/training. And cheap.....(that helps!) :D

As a matter of interest do you happen to remember what these supplements were called?
    Was one of them creatine?

As for the bootcamp, it looks like a reasonable price to get outdoors and have a bit of craic with like-minded people.
    I'd say go for it.

More trainers training clinets the way they train themselves.

Biggest mistake and furthers my statement that bodybuilding training

i.e. split training sessoins with different muscles on each sessoin

is the worst method of training 99% of the population

Also a 6 week yoga course is more expensive and thats a group sessoin also

Transform, can you explain this a little more, why, even though it seems a lot of body builders do it ?

Main reason i'm asking was currently im putting together a 5 day split work out for me self. and after seeing a personl trainer saying it's a terrible way to train, it's not leaving me with much hope :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭G86

    Transform

Thats exactly what he had me doing and it just wasn't working for me. His idea was that walking was the only form of cardio that worked and wouldn't waste muscle...but that meant I didn't lose weight! Sure, toned up a bit but that wasn't my aim. So I went to this new guy and he just seemed an average guy I could relate to more, yknow? But haven't been able to get started yet, can't wait till I do, will be interesting to see how it goes.

    Are you a P/T yourself?

It's a complicated argument but is covered well if you go to www.t-nation.com and look up TBT VS Split Roundtable 1 and 2.

Personally, for adding general mass and overall fitness i prefer TBT myself.

Dr4gul4 - Would you not sign up with a trainer to get yourself started?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭Transform

Yes dragan you are part of the 1% who it works for but as stated those systems from my experience do not work for the average person looking to get into shape.

    Yes i am a trainer.

5 day split - absolute joke if you ask me, would NEVER recommend this to 99% of those out there.

Finally, everyone i know thats in great shape does a hell of alot more than walking-

its just more bodybuilder bull sh*£ talk about how doing anything that might possibly break you into a sweat will lose their 'mass' - total bull!!

Use a trainer that looks like how you want to look or at least is in good shape and walks the talk

well yes and no, i've had a few though on this over all, mainly i find them to be expensive, and w4nkers . i have yet to see / meet any trainer in total fitness i would really consider using.

That being said, if any of them are here in secret you can of course tempt me to give you money :D

    also

    Sorry Dom,

maybe i wasn't clear but i was saying that a full body training split seems to work best for me, not a body part split!

I do 3 weights sessions a week, changing rep range and focus over different bodyparts each day in a cyclical rep scheme.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭G86

D4gul4-The thing is that you won't make any progress if your not doing things right, you're better off even just going for a month, once a week,to get a weights program sorted. At least then you know your on the right track.

Transform- You're right about the walking, used to love running before I stopped on his recommendation to walk instead, and now I can't run for sh*t. 20mins and I'm dying.

    sigh :(
This is true, and i fear i will have to go down the route soon enough. some day the belly will be gone totally, just not yet then.

for the moment i'm going to look about a total body work out

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭G86

But surely it wouldn't be a total body workout without a weights program?!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Dr4gul4

i would have assumed the TBW was all weights orientated. maybe bar a cardio jog at the end . i could be wrong however

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭G86

ah i get you now, I thought you meant you weren't gna do a weights program. You mean that your just not going to do split sessions, is that it?

cool, thats what im gna be doing now too when I get started again.

yea sorry about that, i had planned on a split session, but based on the reading and what Transform has said i'll be planning a TBW, even went down to the supplement store ( hi brian :) ) earlier and picked up some gloves.

The below is the last proper program that i did and i got some good result with it. It might not suit everyone but i had excellent gains from it in conjunction with a proper diet and recovery routine.

why thank you D, i can just about do 5 pushups at the moment, so i'll have a good look at modifying this though :)

    dave

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭Dragan

If you look at the Superset Column you can see which excercises form supersets i.e. one set of the first excercise followed by one set of the second, so what i was doing was , for example, on Day 1 ,Dumbell Chest Press for 5 to 8 reps followed by 10 pushups straight away.

You may or may not want to follow this plan, i am not posting it for that, i just thought it would give a good idea on excercise variation and such. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,417 ✭✭✭Dr4gul4

by all means it's great to have some thing to work with though, i mean i doubt i'll be able to do nearly a third of this, but it's a good start to see what mix's well together.

i'll get ya a pint on Thursday nite sure .

    My bad!!

Your program is similar to mine in many respects i just do less reps on most and more sets. Mostly i just do 6 exercsies for multiple sets

Hello all, this thread has been great to read. I'm going to start the bootcamp tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it as I really need to get fit.

There isn't any offer of a free trial though, all up front.... but I'm going to go, damn it!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 322 ✭✭boffin

Saw these guys working out in bushy park lasy night and I was quite impressed! Couldn't figure out what type of team they were but they were obviously part of the bootcamp! Just saw them as i was passing by but everyone looked like they were working really hard! (lots of sweaty looking faces and t shirts)
