    Hi,

Before that thread about women and sit-ups ran out of control, someone mentioned on it that they'd found a dietician very helpful in losing weight. Anyone else had positive experiences with same?

I could do with losing about a stone, but I don't necessarily eat badly.

I usually have something like a bowl of shredded wheat and cup of tea for breakfast, brown bread sandwiches for lunch and a vegetable and beef stir-fry/baked fish or something reasonably healthy for dinner. Don't overdo it on the boozing either.

Anyone found a dietician to be useful?

I think the majority of peoples problems is portion control. Everybody comes on posting what they eat but never mention portion sizes, so what you just described could be 1000kcal or 10,000kcal!
Many are ignorant of calories too. In work I get people commenting on me eating almost a full small chicken, yet their calorie intake in the same sitting could be twice mine! I have seen others convinced they were "dieting" and eating healthily, but eating almost 1000kcal in a sitting, convinced it is a light lunch. One guy only eats "one sandwich", which consist of over 1/2 a vienna roll and rake of sausages.

Fair point. I don't pig out, but I don't starve myself either. Will have a look at those calorie charts, thanks.

Just ask the questions here - people like myself and others on the boards have enough experience with diet and training to answer your questions.

I totally agree with above posts. People who have weight problems here is how it goes

women eat like men and men eat like pigs!!!

And thats the problem - portions are out of whack, eat for the weight you want to be NOT the weight you are.

I think peoples health issues are specific to themselves (Hence the need for qualified professionals) You can't possibly generalise this and apply a weight loss programme to everybody, also people can have medical issues that prevent the loss of weight as quick as they'd like. so i suggest if your serious about losing weight or related issues then you should see a GP or a Dietician. i know of a good dietician on the northside if anyone is interested PM me! :)

Big-time! I totally recommend that anyone who wants to lose weight spend at least a month logging everything that they eat and how many calories, grams of fat, carbs and protein are in each meal. Reading labels for a while like that will really help show you which foods you need to be especially careful of, and which ones you can indulge in a little without harming your diet.

Case in point, was at a friends recently and she made the whole group dinner. Everyone had a full serving of meat, some veg and a good dose of noodles with a sauce on top. Already this is a big meal. Now for the killer, cashew nuts fried with the vegetables - at least 200g per person. In case no-one gets the significance of that, the cashew nuts alone would have contributed an extra 1,100kcals to each person's meal. I have no doubt that she thought this was a great healthy dinner, despite having just dished out approximately 1,500 - 1,600kcals to each person in one go.

    Know your calories!

Yep noodles was one of the foods a guy in work who was "dieting" was on. A pack of super noodles has 520kcal+, he also ate a banana, apple, yoghurt, milk and some "health" bar, all clocking in at over 1000kcal. Yet people comment if I eat 500kcal of chicken as though I am a glutton.

The meat in a burger can have less calories than the bun, and never believe portion sizes on packets, weigh everything!
