Not all favourites, and in no particular order...just ones that spring to mind:

    Honey - Bobby Goldsboro
    Time Passes - Paul Weller
    Misty Blue - Dorothy Moore
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
    You're Missing - Bruce Springsteen
That's the Way - Led Zeppelin
Tell it like it is - Bettye Swan
This Year's Love - David Gray
I don't want to talk about it - Rod Stewart/Everything but the Girl
Kissing a Fool - George Michael
Two Out of Three Ain't Bad - Meat Loaf

Too many, but I couldn't decide which ones to leave out.

Demon Days - Robert Forster. This was written by Grant McLennan but finished and recorded by Forster after McLennans death - Forster's voice literally oozes sadness at the loss of a friend and Go Betweens founder and bandmate.

Speaking of The Go Betweens/McLennan - try Dusty in Here or Cattle and Cane for real sadness and nostalgia....I haven't heard anything to touch those songs for atmosphere and emotion tbh....

Only ever Listened to that song once, never again.

The original, though I am quite partial to Johnny's cover.

Without a doubt, Kate Bush - This Woman's Work. It's horrifically upsetting. Strangely, the subject matter is not a gloomy one at all - it's simply about giving birth... but the tune - just Kate's voice in particularly mournful mode accompanied by a piano - is SO, SO sad...

Recently used to extremely powerful effect in a NSPCC ad :(

Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush.

A song about depression that follows a man when he becomes unemployed and feels he is letting his family down. Sadder than a broken heart IMO

Pink Floyd - "Time" is pretty depressing.

    Puff the magic Dragon

That song about Jackie Paper losing his childhood imagination and growing up causes a lump in my throat everytime I hear it! Along a similar vein is Rolf Harris's 'Two Little Boys' - also gets me everytime I hear it...

    'Little Green' -Joni Mitchell
'The Circle Game' - Joni Mitchell'
'Into My Arms' - Nick Cave
    'The Ghetto' - Elvis
    'Mother'- John Lennon
'Canon in D major' - Pachelbel
    'Adagio for Strings' - Barber

    Songs already mentioned:

'Hurt' - Nine Inch Nails or the Johnny Cash version'
'Scorn not on Simplicity' - Phil Coulter
'Tears in Heaven' - Eric Clapton

So many sad songs. It's amazing how music can affect us- a fantastic medium for hitting the emotions...

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - 'I See A Darkness'

And no, Johnny Cash did not write this song.

This is the original from Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, from the album also titled 'I See a Darkness', which is simply one of the best albums of the last 20 years.

Although it may not initially sound it I think ''Dancing in the Dark'' - Bruce Springsteen, is one of the saddest songs ever.

The first time I heard it I didn't really get that impression at all but I recently heard a cover version of it where it was completely stripped down to just an acoustic guitar and slowed down too and I really hit me as to how sad it is.

    Nice Thread!

Man there are so many out there here is a few of mine.

Nutshell - by Alice In Chains (epecially unplugged version) the lyrics mixed the with its nice soft aound really make an emotional song.

Forever Young - Alphaville....quite old but the lyrics are very touching also it was played at a Funeral of one of my peers a while back.

Bitter Sweet Symphony - The verve.... A true classic, this was also played the the aforementioned funeral.

Between the Bars - Elliot Smith .....he was a genius and has an amazing vocal style , this song is true brilliance and will get to anyone.

Over and Out - Foo Fighters.....Soft singing accompanied by acoustic guitar and eventually soft drums, what more can I say?

You Can't Quit Me Baby - Queens of the Stone Age (especially the Over the Years and Through the Woods DVD version) I dunno but something about thats song gets to me ....a truely wonderful song.

Long Slow Goodbye - Queens of the Stone Age again another great sad song by these guys and I find The lyrics to be quite powerfull

I'm sure there are plenty more but that's a good few, each of those songs are so different, yet in some sense, can give the same effect, I find these to be sad, yet great, songs!

This. This piece can actually move me to tears if I'm feeling particularly vulnerable when I listen to it (and I like to kick myself when I'm down by listening to sad music when I'm sad!).

Pearl Jam's cover of Last Kiss

It's about losing someone you love

    Live - Lightning Crashes

A friend of the bands was killed by a drunk driver, she was an organ donor and the song is about her corneas being donated to someone else.
