get quotes from the insurers buddy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭GG66

    try www.insure.ie or www.123.ie

I always find cheapest quote through first one above

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I haven't found them to be good personally. I always found shopping around on my own to be the best bet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,295 ✭✭✭gucci

them online insurance things are a joke, you have to call them because the quotes online are way too conservative and high. id say your best bet is quinn direct they were by far the cheapest for first time drivers when i was getting mine.

Axa gave us a fairly decent quote for gf and myself as a named driver. Although she had a few years' no claims as a named driver.

I got the best deal at the time from insure.ie. But do invest a half day or so in ringing around.

You might also consider adding a parent to the car insurance as a named driver. It can help bring it down sometimes.

I don't think that's the case anymore since everyone and their uncle does it :) It certainly doesn't increase the premium though. It might work if you still live at home. It didn't decrease my insurance as I'm living away from home. I've heard the best bet for reducing your premium if you're a guy is to put your girlfriend down as a named driver.

the very best I have at the moment is 2600e from AON (AXA Broker)
i hope there is a chance to get it cheaper...

well, thanks God I didnt give up. after ringing Quinn Direct isurance goes down by almost e1000 ! its 1670 atm.!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Dampsquid

QuinnDirect are cheapest for me every time, by serveral 100 euro. My girlfriend is with them too, and her insurance was 400 euro cheaper than any other insurer. Don't know how anyone would go with anyone else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,295 ✭✭✭gucci

mine was 1600 last year with Q direct and i got a quote in post for renewal, 1051 euro, so the future looks promising for you in that regard, as long as you keep claims free of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Ooh, that's a nice drop. Did you go from a provisional to full licence or anything in the meantime?

no im still on a provisional, hit a bloody kerb on my driving test  il let you know what price fully comp is when i call them later

I'm only interested in TPFT myself anyway. (Car's not worth that much). My own quote was €1600 last year so it'll be interesting to see what this year's is. I assume they send out the renewal quote about a month before the renewal date?

guys just to remind you: its 1700 for TWO provisional drivers. bargain id say :)

You will know why people don't go to Quinn Direct if you have any other enquries where you are not giving them money.

Hopefully you wont have to worry about that unless you pass your test.

Sometimes the cheapest quote is not always the best quote but since you are making hundreds of euro saving them probably best

He means they're crap at paying up when you have an accident. They're well known for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

What's that about passing your test? As in they're slow to give you a refund if you pass your test?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,944 ✭✭✭wingnut

True quinn are aholes but Im tpft so it won't be me who is dealing with them in the event of a clain. My policy came down from 950 to 598 this year with QD.

26 M 6 year full licence and 2 year NCD (named driver before that). I have three named drivers one of who is a provisional.

I was with AXA before that what a joke. The renewal went up!!! When I told them there was not way I was paying that they dropped €400 off the price just like that! Quinn were still cheaper with the named drivers though. SHows what utter *&!#s they are that they would have taken the €400 if I had paid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

    AXA are indeed assholes.

"So, you've been with us before"
    "Yes"
"Ah, and I see your parents are with us"
"Yes" (/me thinks at this point that things are going well)
"That entitles you to a little squirt of lube before we shaft you up the ass".
"Oh great. Cheers. I'm just going to take my business elsewhere".

Quinn Direct pull numbers out of their arse.
First year driving, provisional license, 1L car, 23 yr old male.
    Quote: €4500
Fine, I just go with someone else for €2500.

Second year driving, provisional license, 1L car, 1 years NCD.
    Renewal Quote: €2000
    Quinn Direct Quote: €1400

So thats a drop of €3100 for 1 years NCD. Needlesss to say I went with them, but its still madness!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

All Irish insurance companies pull numbers out of their ass unfortunately :(

After a few years dealing with insurance co's you know exactly what Trampas means. Provisional drivers get screwed and wonder why....

    For example:
Read, Read, Read the policy you get offered, mostly you'll go with the cheaper deal, who wouldn't, but when you claim for a broken window and your renewal goes up by five billion euro, you'll be sorry you didn't pay the extra fiver for a different insurer who offers no claims protection on glass.

    No claims protection, step-back cover?...

When you call AXA and get an answer in two rings as opposed to two hours, you'll know why they charge (a bit) more.

I found AA Insurance good, they found me similar cover to that which I had previously with AXA, but cheaper.

Heard the Quinn rumours of no pay out, I can't say I've ever seen proof. I know when I contacted them for a quote they asked questions and requested information no other insure had asked me (information to which I felt they have no right), so I would not deal with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,944 ✭✭✭wingnut

I left quinn originally because of an argument over where I lived. My house is in Co. Clare but the postal address is Limerick (nearest distribution center). They wanted to charge me €100 more for living in Limerick unless I could prove I was living in Clare. I told them to look it up on a map and eventually to get stuffed. I am with them again because they are the cheapest.

The big problem with AXA is come renewal time you never know what way your premium will go!!

WTF How many years have the two of you been driving?

I rang quinn direct the other day for a first time driver Fiat Punto 1.1L, 2000, value of the car E1000 I got a quote for E1,800 but you and I guess your woman can get a quote for 1,700 on a skoda 1.6

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Insurance premiums definitely seem to be coming down.

Last year, I got a speculative quote for myself for this year and the quote was €1300. My insurance is due for renewal soon, and I typed the exact same details into the system to get €1050.

hmm... none. we passed theory test somewhen in november.
quinn confirmed quotation: 1790e and we accepted that, so getting all the paperwork probably tommorow

of course its that cheap only because my g/f is the first driver...

The car can sometimes matter as much as the drivers.

The make and model more so then engine size.

Quinn direct do generally appear to be the cheapest for young inexperienced drivers.

Passed my test this morning (yay :D).

Rang Quinn Direct. Got an answer in two rings. Was told I wouldn't get a refund this year as I had only 3 weeks left on my policy (fair enough). Was told promptly though that my renewal quote would be €756, down from €1056 if I still had my provisional :) I don't think windscreen cover is included as it's a new thing for Quinn Direct since last year and I didn't have it on this year's policy, but I checked the web quote to find I could get windscreen cover included in the 756 quote. I reckon I'll just have to mention it to them when it comes to actually renewing my policy.

I still have to shop around a bit to see if anyone will beat the 756 quote. But if there's a few hundred euro difference with the next cheapest quote like there was last year, I'm definitely sticking with them.

Hibernian just quoted me €1400 which is bull****. They'll also charge me more if I want to put my mother on my policy, like wtf.

Well jesus that's some bargain. I honestly find it hard to believe I mean your talking about a 1.6L for two drivers that have never even driven a car before. You must be In your 30's?

Mother f***ers were charging me 1,800 on a ****ty fiat punto 1.1 value of the car 1,000 and Im 21

If I was to get a car would I be better off putting my woman on it aswell as the main driver?

If you put your wife/girlfriend down then as a named driver then you've a good chance of getting a discount.

Would you mind explaining that to me please.

I mean if there are two people on the insurance surely if should go up not go down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,136 ✭✭✭✭Stark

As a male, you're considered to be a higher risk than a female. From the insurance company's point of view, the time your girlfriend spends driving the car is time you're not driving the car, so the average risk decreases.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 171 ✭✭Hoops1888

    I know that Stark.

For example I know a guy who is insured with quinn direct he is driving since he is 17, he is 21 now and has a full licence, has an Audi 1.6 but he is currently paying 1,900 for his insurance.

He has four years no claim bonus never a crash or anything like that.

fl4pj4ck They might of made a mistake but will you get back and let us know how it goes?

Sure jesus instead of buying a fiat punto id be better buying a bigger engine car and put my woman as main driver.

fl4pj4ck Will you put up all details of the Skoda or PM them to me that you would need to get a quote ill ring up see what price they give me.

Wouldn't mind seen a lovely 1.4L car for sale only about 1,200 but the guy said not to bother because there is no way I would get insured.

If you put your girlfriend down as main driver, then she'll be the one building an NCB during the time she's insured, not you. You might get a discount for named driver experience in the future, but generally it's not much. That's a hidden cost you should consider.

Who have you tried for insurance btw?
