Why is it that light bulbs almost always go out as they are swiched on?

Why do people have belly-buttons? Why not a smooth belly?

In the belly-button world, Why are there innies and outies? why not only innies or only outies?

    [edit]
Was on my way out the door and did not think my part of this thread through :D

People, post your "Why's?" and those that know the answer post it up.

We might discovery some pretty cool stuff

Cos when they cut the string yoke off they either cut it as an innie or outtie by mistake!!! I think....

I am not sure of the first Q, although the initial surge may have something to do with it. Although according to MythBusters, the surge is not very significant.

    As for the second+third. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belly_button

I've seen better whys, but anyway.

current surge when turning on bulbs.

umbilical tube is attached here in the womb, without it babies wouldn't survive.

when the umbilical cord is cut and tied off it heals pretty much randomly.

the surge doesn't have to be much more than normal, a thin bit of filament will be hotter at startup than any other time and will nearly always break then when going from cold to hot.

Why is boards not a medical forum?

On the subject of belly buttons I found this on another forum and if it works it can be added to the list of why's. Doesn't work for me btw.
Ok i discovered this a long time ago, i havent googled for an answer or owt but hey lets see how this goes ;p

    For this you will require

1x Finger or long pointy implement.
    1x Exposed Belly Button.

Take your finger of pointy device and push it deep into your belly button, try not to draw blood, then twist said device around, move it, twist it, push it a lil deeper. Do this for a lil bit then take out yer device.

Question is this, do you now have a tingling sensation in your cock? Top, middle, bottom or either side?

If not try again and let us know ;p

Girls! Please also try this and let us know if you feel anything anywhere ;p

    GO!

    and dont ask!

Why do people put their ATM cards in twice when they can clearly see a queue behind them?
Why do people not have their ATM card out before getting to the ATM? Why are ATMs so slow? Why can't we have an account setting where we choose if we want reciepts or not - why do they have to babble on about the environment all the time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,044 ✭✭✭Gaspode

Why is it that light bulbs almost always go out as they are swiched on?
The surge of electricity when the light is switched on rapidly heats the metal from room temp to over 1000C in milliseconds. This creates stress on the metal and it begins to thin at certain points. This continues until one day, the surge is too much and it blows when switched on. Its the rapid change in temp thats the problem, hence it blows when switched on rather than during normal operation.[/Quote]
Why do people have belly-buttons? Why not a smooth belly?

Because people with no belly button are just ugly.:D
The belly button is the scar left from where your umbillical cord was attached while you were in the womb. (In Yore Ma!). Pretty much all mammals have one.
In the belly-button world, Why are there innies and outies? why not only innies or only outies?
Just depends on how well the scar healed up when you were small. Rotundness of the belly can push your sweet likkle innie into a yucky ugly outy if you're not careful, so keep away from those sweeties, and dont get pregnant.

Probably but there was nothing else on my mind at the time.

ok, here is a decent one.

Why is time directly related to gravity? The more gravity there is the slower time passes

I thought you were asking why time was related to Gravy there for a second!

Why do people put their ATM cards in twice when they can clearly see a queue behind them?

Because once you reach the top of the queue, you should be allowed use the machine however many times you want. You have waited as long as anyone else in the bleedin queue. And some of us have more than one account and it will take two goes to get your last 20 quid out :(

Why do people insist on asking questions when almost everything is googlable now. Lazyness I say

Both of them are variables, what equations or formula can you show me to show they are directly related to each other?

    1. Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries
    are flat?

    2. Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know
    there
    is not enough?

    3. Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion
    stars,
but check when you say the paint is wet?

    4. Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?

    5. Why do they use sterilised needles for death by lethal injection?

    6. Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

    7. Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you
    throw
    a gun at him?

    8. Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

    9. Whose idea was it to put an "S" in the word "lisp"?

    10. What is the speed of darkness?

    11. Are there specially reserved parking spaces for "normal" people at
    the
    Special Olympics?

    12. If you send someone 'Styrofoam', how do you pack it?
    13. If the temperature is zero outside today and it's going to be twice
    as
cold tomorrow, how cold will it be?
    14. If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

    15. If it's true that we are here to help others, what are the others
    doing
    here?

    16. Do married people live longer than single ones or does it only seem
    longer?

    17. If someone with a split personality threatens to commit suicide, is
    it
    a hostage situation?

    18. Can you cry under water?

    19. What level of importance must a person have, before they are
    considered
    assassinated instead of just murdered?

    20. If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?

    21. Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

    22. How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would
    be
a good idea to put wheels on bigger suitcases?

    23. Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake
    up,
    like, every two hours?

    24. If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?

    25. Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in
binoculars to look at things on the ground?

what difference does that make, loads of equations relate variables. I thought it was accepted that time is slowed in high gravity. It's in einsteins general theory of relativity.

Because they can check if the paint is wet, they have no way of easily determining how many stars there are.

It needs to react with water before it gets sticky.
    obl wrote:

So they don't get a concussion and miss or fail to reach their target
    obl wrote:

Humans didn't evolve from modern apes. Humans and modern apes evolved from a common ancestor

It's easier to make a square box than a round one.

I know a lot of the questions on that list weren't serious but some of them make you think.

Just found the reasons for sterilising lethal injections.
    Wikipedia wrote:
The needles and equipment used are also sterilized. One reason for this is that cannulae are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacture. Secondly, there is a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the cannulae have been inserted, as happened in the case of James Autry in October 1983 (he was executed eventually on March 14, 1984). Finally, it would also be a hazard for those handling unsterile equipment.

the point of the thread is to answer 'whys' this isn't a why. You are debating whether the premise of the question is true, not 'why' is it true. You are claiming it isn't.

I know it's true that it is part of Einstein's theory of general relativity but you are right I don't remember it off the top of my head. For shame! it's been a long time since college. If you are familiar with it at all you will know it is not a=b type stuff...

    F = GMm/r^2

    F=Force
    G=universal gravitational constant=6.67*10-11 N-m^2/kg^2
    M=mass of first body
    m=mass of second body
    r=distance between objects

by newton's second law of motion, F=ma = mass by acceleration

unit of acceleration is m/s^2 = metre per second squared

    m/s^2=GMm/r^2

so as gravitational pull increases, time decreases

1.Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries
    are flat?

To be sure that the batteries actually are dead, not just that we’re not pressing the button hard enough for it to register.

    2. Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know
    there is not enough?

Because they’re ****. It’s an “administration fee”, which actually amounts to about 50p. If you’ve been unfairly charged for things like that, you can claim your money back.

    3. Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion
stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?

You have to take their word about the stars because you can’t count them yourself, but you can touch paint to see if it’s wet.

    4. Why doesn't glue stick to the bottle?

It has to react with air to become sticky.

    5. Why do they use sterilised needles for death by lethal injection?

All needles are sterilized upon manufacture.

    8. Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

    It’s regulation.

    12. If you send someone 'Styrofoam', how do you pack it?

It doesn’t need to be packed, it’s not fragile. You just put it in an envelope/container.

    15. If it's true that we are here to help others, what are the others
    doing here?

    Helping us

    18. Can you cry under water?

    Yes

    22. How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would
be a good idea to put wheels on bigger suitcases?

Because putting people on the moon seemed more important.
