Okay, so im heading over to Poland on Thursday to see my beautiful Polish girlfriend, and ive been told its Womens Day. Fair enough, i won't begrudge half the worlds population a day.

So my question to anyone of Polish origin/experience is what is an appropriate gift given that i cant really bring flowers on the plane or get them once over there....

    Beyond chocolates...

Aprons, housecoats, jay cloths, washing powder...

All these are items beloved by women in this country .. surely poland is the same?

Aside from that you could try... sented candles, drawer liners (smelly item), bubble bath sets, cds , books...

As its coming up to mothers day here you will find plenty in the shops suitable for women

Not Polish, but there are universals... A thin silver bracelet? Not expensive, but personal. Maybe engraved with a few words from you to her? And not one of those quotes, but something you made up?

Pretty sure women's day isn't a gift occasion. It's supposed to be a political thing. The meaning has been lost.

Quite differently to how it is celebrated in much of the West, where its primarily a political day.

In Eastern Europe the sort of gestures (particular flowers) that are common here on Valentine's Day (only recently also celebrated in much of Eastern Europe) often feature in International Womens Day, while the political aspects of it are very much understated or unstated (due to it having been a celebration imposed by the Communist Party).

Maybe there's some guy on a Polish site right now looking at how the day is marked in Ireland and saying "protests and meetings, gah, glad I can just buy some flowers and that's it sorted".

That was a typo, I meant particularly flowers. It's in Italy that there are particular flowers (mimosa).

I remember reading that in Russia an even number of flowers (eg a dozen roses) signifies death, so eleven roses is the equivalent for happy occasions. Could be the same in Poland so check it out!

I'm sure as they decided whether to jump out of the 10th story windows of the Triangle Shirtywaist factory or perish in the flames, many of the women and twelve-year-old girls considered your plight and would indeed support your whine.

    It's about liberation and justice.

This was around the time when Emma Goldman wrote "Why would unfree women want to be equal to unfree women" and people hadn't been persuaded to settle for equality and were still fighting for liberation.

Indeed it is, and St Valentines was about love, and Christmas was about religion and all these other days used to be about things.

Give it 5 years and you'll , have your Hallmark Womens day cards.

Nothing says "I love you" like bringing her sister over for a threesome.

Highly debatable. But if you can inject her ma into the threesome, rolling it into what's often labelled a "foursome", now you're talking about a women's day that she will never - ever - forget.

To see if this was even possible I asked my girlfriend, "can you remember the Emma Goldman about unfree women and equality". She replied, "who? I'm no good at remembering quotes".

    Sexism is hilarious.

Especially when it's all about how men aren't good for anything but money unless they've got a 10" penis.

    Then it's a hoot a minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

Do ya know what perfume she likes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

I do, and she already has it. :p
