Thoughts on home multigyms in general

I've a treadmill downstairs which is used most evenings after work and helps keeps the weight under control without having to worry too much about what I eat or drink on a daily basis.

However, have a spare room upstairs that I'm thinking of turning into a mini gym.

Have only got a budget of about 500 euro so not going to get anything too fancy.

Am torn between just getting a bench and weights or going down the multigym approach, room isn't big enough for both.

Does anyone have a multigym at home that they would recommend and what are peoples thoughts on them in general for putting on some muscle?

Not looking to go down the road of serious lifting, would like to increase amount of muscle though which running alone won't do.

I have one and I think they are great! Not really much point getting one if your a gym member, but I prefer working out at home

Posted a similar thread a while ago, the general consesis was to rather get a bench and weights so i did! Glad i did though, does make sense that you can do so much more with a few weights, got 3 big posters with different things u could do.
With 500 bucks you could get a really fancy bench with extra features similar to the multi gym (from what iv seen).

    Hey Longfield,
I think it's whatever works for you mate. Do you honestly think you'll get good use out of it?

I had a load of equipment at home that became an expensive clothes horse. But down the gym I bang it out.

My brother is the exact opposite. He might work out for two and a half hours at home, but just goes to the gym to chat, as far as I can tell.

If you do go home gym, go for a bench, a squat rack, an olympic bar (6 feet),
an e-z curl bar (preferably with olympic clips), a couple of dumbells ( again preferably with olympic clips) and of course some weights. You should get all that for 500 sheets. That would be a great start for any home gym. And the interweb is full of workout programs and so on for your very needs.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for all the great feedback guys.

Joining a gym isnt really an option for me as the nearest one is probably 20 miles away and after a days work I'd just like to drive home, work out, hit the shower and then chill out in front of the telly or boards.

Looks like I'll be going for the bench and weights route unless someone knows of a multigym that does it all for about 500 bills.

I used to quite enjoy chin ups in the past, however the walls here are plasterboarded so fastening to them or the door frames is out, that powerstation looks like just the thing, thanks ronbyrne2005

Skip the multigym - very limiting. If you can pick up something like this:http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/store/product.asp?dept_id=9&pf_id=Bodytec_Heavy_Power_Rack with your bench, there is scarcely an exercise you wont manage.
