Running on a treadmill as opposed to the road

During the week I do a lot of my training runs (up to 10k distance) on the treadmill in the gym as opposed to the roads. I compete regularly in road races and am due to run a half marathon on April 1st. I was just wondering is running on the treadmill just as beneficial as running on the roads. I know that you can never compensate natural road running with the weather factor etc. Some one was telling me that treadmill running can cause a lot of injuries (not sure where he got that idea from).

i've heard some people say the same that the total consitency of the treadmill surface can lead to overuse injuries. but the same things are said about road running with the advice to run of grass or uneven surfaces as much as possible.

I think treadmills are fine if you mix them in with road work. I believe the std is to use a 1% incline on the treadmill to make the effort closer to running outside.

treadmills are fine as davey said as long as they are only part of your routine. Likewise due to the hard surface you wouldn't want to train too much on a road otherwise you collect injuries. I used to run on grass quite a lot as it had give and your also using self propel. Thats the one downfall of treadmills. You'll find it harder to run and pace yourself on a road after using one as on a treadmill all you have to do is keep up with it, on a road you have to propel yourself forward.

if possible get on a running track, this is the best solution. i have one near the house and use it regularly.
