Are the oscars not usually shown live? Seen to remember Jonathan Ross doing the show on BBC the last couple of years. Cant find any sign of it being shown.

I remember last year they weren't shown, or at least not on free TV - might have been on Sky Movies.

Someone was kind enough to do a webcast though.. maybe they'll do the same this year?

Sky Movies only this year :(

Sky Movies are carrying them live.

    Anyone fancy making some predictions?

    Best Film - Departed
Director - Scorsese (its now or possibly never)
Actor - Whitiker (overnight success after 20 years)
Actress - Mirren (posh Brit who Yanks like, or Streep cos she's the only Yank!)
Supporting - Alan Arkin (veteran talent who deserves gong)
Supporting - Rinko Kikuchi (cripple/mental vote to 'borrow' from Kate Winslet) or Abigail Breslin (cute kid vote)

    Mike.

I thought i seen earlier that they are showing on sky one live at 11?

I normally stay up to watch them but not going to bother this year.
Standard of nominees in the major categories is very poor this year.

    I'd predict the same, tbh.

Dont think The Departed and Scorcese, one or the other i reckon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

I love Sorcese and his films, but I dont think The Departed deserve best picture...But I did think The Aviator deserved it 2 years ago. So my opinion tends not to matter when it comes to oscars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

Just saw The Aviator a couple of nights ago. I didn't really enjoy it too much - although I got the impression I might have done if I had known more about the people being portrayed.

I'm not sure if The Departed deserves it, but I think it might get it nonetheless.

Anyone know where we could watch the oscars online?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    My predictions:
Performance by an actor in a leading role: Forest Whitaker

Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Alan Arkin

Performance by an actress in a leading role: Helen Mirren

Performance by an actress in a supporting role: Jennifer Hudson

Best animated feature film of the year: "Cars"

Achievement in art direction: "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"

    Achievement in cinematography: "Pan’s Labyrinth"

Achievement in costume design: "The Queen"

    Achievement in directing: Martin Scorsese

Best documentary feature: "An Inconvenient Truth"

Achievement in film editing: "United 93"

Best foreign language film of the year: "Pan’s Labyrinth"

    Achievement in makeup: "Pan’s Labyrinth"

Achievement in music written for motion picture (Original score): "Notes on a Scandal" - Philip Glass

Best motion picture of the year: "The Departed"

Achievement in sound editing: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest"

    Achievement in sound mixing: "Dreamgirls"

Achievement in visual effects: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest"

    Adapted screenplay: "The Departed"

    Original screenplay: "Babel"

Left out one or two which i hadn't seen or had no opinion on. This is what i think will win, not all are what i want to win.

    Some side thoughts...

Scorsese deserves it. 'The Departed' was not his finest film but he deserves it after denied that Best Director award so many times.

Would love to see 'Little Miss Sunshine' pick up a few but can see stuff like 'Babel' (for it's serious and heartful storyline) and 'Dreamgirls' (for it's music and biopic nature) absolutely clean up.

Also would like to see 'Pan's Labyrinth' win a few.. i hope it wins best art direction / best make-up though i think Pirate's may deny it on one or maybe both of those.

Sky's coverage from the red carpet is atrocious anyway.

The stupid muppet they have doing it doesn't even know how to use a microphone, all her questions are off mic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,195 ✭✭✭✭Basq

All this chat of the Oscars reminds me of the Oscar Pool i won here (well.. joint first) 2 years back.

Never got that mouse mat though! :(

    Great link ro2.

Might watch a bit of it but am pretty wrecked. Also don't find Ellen DeGeneres particularly funny or entertaining.. they should have got Billy Crystal for the 19th year in a row! :D

EDIT: I thought it was starting at 1AM GMT.. obviously not. Am off to bed.

Am hoping to see at least some of the predictions were accurate in the morning.

I've got sound now, WMP11, but no picture. I got prompted for a WMP update, I'll grab that and see what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,626 ✭✭✭Stargal

V glad to see that. Ok, Art Direction isn't the most major category but it's well deserved.

Nice one, first two for Pan's Labyrinth.

Loved that film. Deservers everything it gets.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭Milktrolley

    Short Film - Animated
    The Danish Poet

    Short Film - Live Action
    West Bank Story

The coverage on Sky isn't nearly as bad as the year Sharon Osbourne was hosting it, but still, give it back to the Beeb I say.

It's also being streamed on TVU for anyone that has it.

That's the girl from Little Miss Sunshine.

She's totally upstaged Will Smith's spawn.

The Guardian's Oscar blog says that apparently Spielberg, Lucas and Coppola are going to be presenting the Best Director Oscar. As the blog says:
Does this not slightly give the game away? It's a safe bet they won't be giving it to Paul Greengrass.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭Milktrolley

And so Dreamgirls wins an Oscar. I like Eddie Murphy, but lets hope it's the only award they pick up this evening!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Playboy

Link doesnt work for me cause I'm in London. Anyone know of any other links?

And so Dreamgirls wins an Oscar. Lets hope it's the last!

    QFT.

There was a guy nominated in this category (Sound) who's been nominated 19 times and lost every single time (Linky to story on BBC about him). And Scorsese thinks he's had it rough?

A great stuff. Alan Arkin is one of my all time favourite actors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 995 ✭✭✭cousin_borat

That slagging Mark Wahlberg got from Rachel Weisz was pretty close to the bone!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

Nice speech from Alan Arkin. I think that was a vote for a veteran actor, rather than a performance in a role, but whatever :)

    Good film, good actor.

And the list of people who've been screwed over doesn't stop there either. I loved the quip Jon Stewart made after "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" won Best Song last year.

"For anyone who's keeping count, that's Three 6 Mafia, 1, Martin Scorsese, zero."
