Dips

I did dips for the first time about two weeks ago and ended with a pain in my neck and unable to move my neck fully around for about a week. I did 15, about 20 mins later I did 20 and then 2 mins later I did 15.

As far as I know I was doing them properly; started with arms straight then down to upper arms in line with shoulders and then back up. I was doing them unassisted on a machine like this:

I have heard that they can damage your shoulders but not cause neck pains. Is this a common injury from dips? Or maybe did I do too many first time around?

No whats probably happening is your shoulders are riding up and putting tension in your neck which is causing the pain. Try make sure that they're held down and back next time if you do that and it still hurts it could mean a number of things such as mis aligned vertabrae so would be worth a visit to the physio.

Btw nice numbers for first time dipping

I got a bit of pain in my neck and shoulders when I started off doing dips regularly, but nothing serious. I'd have someone who knows what they're doing take a look at your form just to make sure it's not a technique issue.

    Hi,

Apologies for digging this up but it was the most aptly names thread so i said i would add to it.

I have not been doing dips as part of my gym routine to date - To be honest, very little weights in general, until now. I am unsure as to whether or not i could do them unassisted starting off (i'm 90kg) and as my gym doesnt have a dedicated dip machine i was wondering what other exercises i would be able to do for a week or two to give myself a good base in order to be able to perform a few sets of unassisted dips.

    Any help appreciated - Thanks.
