Thats because so is Linux\UNIX

Basically, its a whole other operating system standard, based off some common core components. Pros and Cons depend on what you would be wanting to use it for.

Apple Mac's run on BSD which is based on Unix. btw.


What is windows ?
Dos + windows 3.11 / Windows XP / Windows on PDA's / XBox's / Back end Servers for databases and web / etc.

Linux / Unix would have even greater variety.

You can get versions that cost money.
You can get free versions that don't cost. Many windows programs won't run on unix, then again many windows programs don't run on other versions of windows and that's some thing to take up with the publisher of the program.

If you get something like ubuntu you will be able to edit word / excel and powerpoint documents with the included software so basic office productivity is a given. More advanced stuff varies.

I'd say the best way to answer your question is to download an ubuntu livecd and just run it.
