Hey, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place but here is my problem. My knees crack an awful lot. I'm 22 and it's been happening for years. If i am sitting down and i get up they often crack, or sometimes just if i walk around i get this feeling that i need to move my knees so they crack. Don't know am i making sense here. Anyway, I'm getting a bit worried about it. Is there anything i should do? Am i doing damage with every crack or is there nothing to worry about. Any comments/advice will be appreciated.

Try taking fish oils - lots of Omega's. Further to that, see a GP/Physio. Good Luck!

    Ask your pharmacist/doctor about glucasamine.

What they ^^ said but also the golden rule is if it doesn't hurt don't worry about it. If it starts to hurt don't wait but get it checked out straight away.

go see a physio or GP to get it checked out

I'm quiet a bit older than you (38) and I had to give up road running a good few years ago because I had such soreness in my knees, I had lots of cracking too.

In the last 2 years I went to a physio about it and he said there was no injury as such that he could identify. I now take a glucosamine tablet every day (best value I have found is the carton in Tesco) along with a large tablespoon of Cod Liver oil - yeuch !! I'm now running about 25 miles per week - zero soreness during or after the run - I'm a new man, it's worth a try for you, especially the Cod Liver Oil, that won't do you any harm at all. You can get it in capsules but I think raw is the best - just hold your nose while taking it.

Always look around for unknown or generic brands in shops, usually far cheaper, I got some odd brand of glucosamine in tesco rather than "seven seas", exact same amount 500mg, even had some extra nutrients in it, and it was almost half the price.

I had a look online and it is even cheaper to buy in bulk from sports nutrition suppliers. like www.pronutrition.ie

And you do not have to suffer fish oils straight! you can get capsules to mask the taste.

My knees crack a bit and in my left knee I get the horrible tearing sort of sound, you can barely hear it, has to be really quiet and have my knee near my ear. It has lessened recently after taking glucosamine & flax & cod oil. I also cycle in a lower gear now (45mins a day) which I think can affect it a lot.
My knees were never sore, nor injured but that sound is terrible to hear

Ok i got a bit of (what i think was very good) advice and it seems that the "crack" comes from a bubble of gas escaping from the joint as the kneecap tracks over the thigh bone. I actually had heard of this before but i wasn't sure was it true. So it seems it shouldn't cause arthritis. All this is provided there is no pain. If there is pain, check it out simple as that. I have taken alot of flax seed oil (probably a better source of omega fats then ur seven seas cod liver oil stuff) and eaten alot of fish as i have psoriasis and these are good for the skin so i wouldn't go buying them and this glucosamine stuff just for cracking knees. Having said that there is no harm in cod liver oil and i wouldn't advise against it. I have been told that exercise of the thighs is good for the cracking. Thanks for the comments and i hope what i said there can help some people. Now i'm no expert so don't take my words as gospel.

Glucosimine and chondroitin repairs joints and cartrilidge-but if there is no pain in the joint its fine-cracking is nothing without pain..
