*Gen Season 3 spoilers* Continuity error or something bigger?

So Desmond and Juliet get picture taken in Desmond's "flashforward"

Photographer takes one pic which Juliet pays for and Desmond takes.

    All ok so far.

Now here's the kicker: In the opening segment of Season 2 we see the same pic of Juliet and Desmond on the fridge and we see it when Desmond is running around the place naked last week ....

But then there was the end of season 2! Didnt Juliet have the same pic of her and Desmond at her bedside?

If so there's 2 things at play: a continuity error that will drive away fans in their droves (me included) or something else. A play with time?

I think the rest of the worlds sense of time and the islands sense of time are 2 completely different things.

    Thoughts?

    1. Its PENNY!
    2. Drive fans away in their droves? Seriously?

I think it's probably a continuity error but they'll fix it in a later episode. There'll be a scene where Desmond and Penny attempt a reconciliation and he gives her a copy of the picture before he heads off to join the army.

It's a problem alrgiht, also you might like to check this out but I believe that Penny is supposed to be wearing black and is in the end of season 2 one but the original picture she s wearing white

    http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage.php?album=topn&cat=39&pos=0

and the one des has on the island

    http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage.php?album=1250&pos=751

first pic was before the actress was cast so clearly a continuity error there unless I'm missing something, why they purposedly putting that picture into the story arc now I don't know, it would be a huge error if the 2 copies that we are seeing are meant to be the same copy...I imagine that will be resolved.

    I love threads like this.

They remind me that even though I'm a nerd I'm not as bad as some.

Do you really think a continuity error will drive away viewers in their droves?

This is one of those posts I meant to reply to at the time.

Yes, if its a continuity error that big, then alot of fans will lose faith. But I dont think the writers would miss something that big. If there's only one pic then, to paraphrase Hurley, its not where the hell are they - its when.

I do feel that the LOST viewers are tolerable to a few small errors, there is the feeling that if the writers keep making these mistakes and start making major mistakes, it will make them look like they almost don't know what they are doing anymore.

With respect (I like your posts on this board ;)) this was a lot more than a small error, this is huge if its a fúckup imho.

Hey, come on lads, dry your eyes. :) I'm sure this has been brought to the attention of the writers and they have a fix for it or it was something deliberate. Maybe the next Desmond flashback will show how he was court-martialled and there'll be a scene where Penny gives him back the photo so he has something to look at during his long, lonely nights in the slammer.

The writers definitely know about this and in fact made reference to it in a podcast shortly after the episode aired. I don't think the fans had even noticed it at that stage. They seemed to hint it was to do with some change Desmond had made in the past. If anyone wants I'll try and dig up the quote.

Either that or Desmond made a copy and sent it to Penny before leaving. We haven't seen all of Desmond's backstory yet. This may be answered next week.

I think it probably on purpose. Don't know what it means but it seems to be another reference to the thematic motif of black and white running through the show with the two different shirts penny has on. I know its a different scenario but the whole picture continuity error, also reminds me of the picture of hurley and his mate the docter showed him in the asylem which was clearly differnent to when it was taken.

What so Desmond was with two different woman? In on of his stories he is with Penny and in another he is with Penny, but not the Penny we know.

I was talking about the photographer only giving Des and Penny one copy even though they both have it later on.

As far as there being a different actress in the original season 2 photograph well that's hardly a continuity error. We can't expect them to cast a talented actress (like Sonya Walger) and tell her "ok Sonya we're gonna take a picture of you and, who knows, next season you might get some lines, see ya." The Penny in the original photograph probably wasn't even an actress but a no name model. Most of her face was deliberately obscured in shadow anyway so they knew they'd have to find a real actress later, it was just too early to cast the role.

Penny wearing a different colour shirt was just a mistake but since there was a totally different face wearing that shirt it's not a big deal imo :D

That makes alot more sense. I was thinking along the lines of something else.

    I agree with Sad Prof,
    its just casting,
thes errors happen the whole time in TV shows, and nobody notices,
because lost is surrounded by theories they all get found out,
it was a different actress and a wardrobe mess up, they might bring it in to shut people up, but id rather they didnt change the story because of mistakes like this,

Possible explanation - It's a Paradox - Desmond altered the timeline in his post turning the key flash back. Something similar occurs in the Steven King saga The Dark Tower. Spoilered for those who haven't read it.

    Book 1 : The Gunslinger
Roland (The Gunslinger) is chasing the man in black, while doing so he encounters a boy called Jake. Roland learns that Jake was pushed in front of a car in his world and encountered the man in black as a priest giving him the final rite. Jake then woke in Roland's world suffering from a form of amnesia. Roland presumed the boy was some sort of trap set by the man in black. In the final pursuit of the man in black, Jake dies. Roland could have saved him but chose to pursue the man in black instead.

Book 2 : The Drawing Of The Three
Roland goes through a door to Jake's world moments before Jake is pushed in front of the car and stops it so he never encounters Jake in his world.

    Book 3 : The Wastelands
The paradox gives Roland two sets of memories. One without Jake, One with Jake. This sends him on the road to insanity - the trap is sprung.

Desmond could have changed something/behaved differently in the flashback, causing Penny to change her mood and select a different sweater to wear that day they had the photograph taken. In which case he would have two sets of memories which could potentially make him a bit insane.

Really interesting theory, supose it could have some truth to it.

    Not I, for one.
The closest Lost has come to driving me away is the writers expecting me to accept that Eko was killed by a cloud of smoke. At the minute, I've resolved that in my own mind because I believe the Others control the monster outright, despite what Juliet said to Kate, and they obviously needed to take Eko out of the picture for their own reasons...

They took Eko out when he refused to accept what he had done. He believed that her had done everything for his brother and that he did not have to say sorry for anything he had done in the past.

I don’t know weather the Others used to control the Smoke before. I don’t think they are in control of the Smoke now though. Then again, they may never have controlled it in the first place.

The writers have said that the intention was to kill Eko towards the end of the season but he wanted to leave the show earlier so it was rushed in to the first six episodes of the season.

Ah right, i wonder did he get another part in a movie or something. He has been in:

Ace Ventura Pet Detective: When Nature Calls
    Bourne Supremecy

    I liked him in LOST.

Me too, not the best actor ever but he had been given a difficult role (a Buddhist actor playing a Roman Catholic priest/Nigerian druglord) but his screen "hardiness" impressed me I have to say.

Yeah there was parts where he looked and acted damn evil. He brought something else to LOST.

He was in Oz too I think.
His accent is great too, I never would've suspected he would have such a strong English accent in real life!

His accent in LOST is what made his character. It was firm and deep, made him sound evil and wise at the same time.

I loved Eko and was really angry when he got killed off. But in retrospect I think they handled it well. I like his speech to Yemi/Smokey about not being sorry for the life he was given, etc. Still wish he was around a bit longer. Damn those Tailies had very bad luck :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,854 ✭✭✭Sinfonia

    Hurley: "So...Rose's husband's white....Didn't see that coming" :D

Just as we're on the subject of tailies

Officially he left because he didn't want a long term commitment to the show and the writers agreed to write him out after a year. Unofficially there were rumours of his bad off-screen behaviour perhaps stemming from his parents death the previous year—he was arrested in Hawaii for driving without a license (charges were later dropped) and was said to be difficult to work with—so bye bye Eko.

The other two departed tailies were arrested for drunk driving on the same night. Of course, officially, they left for other reasons.

ABC isn't very forgiving to actors for messing up their show's reputation :D

I have to say that i'd be pretty pissed off if the Other's were in control of the Black Smoke. Its still one of the big mysteries, and if it turns out that some guy is sitting as a computer, using his ps2 joypad to kill anyone (bar Locke) that it comes in contact with, then that will drive away fans in droves.

As for the picture...if its an error, big deal. Its only a different jumper. If it is the time paradox thing, then thats cool too.

Nah i think it is safe to say that the smoke is not being controlled by the others. It may be the result of some experiement. The fence is there to keep it out. No one would build a fence like that if they controlled the one thing that the fence was there to keep out.

Not after the slating they got last time :).
