Nay. It's a Gibson. Faffoos to Gibson tbh.

You do realise that for €1500, Ran could make you one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,144 ✭✭✭LundiMardi

I'd say yay, on the condition that you've played it and you are happy that it is in good condition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I'd say yay, even I wouldn't do it myself, I just don't get the LP hype at all. It's about average for a second hand LP. You're not going to lose money on it should it suck balls and you sell it on. People will alwys buy on the strength of the name on the headstock rather than the quality of the guitar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

nay for me... Think of what you could get for €1500 from ibanez or custom for that matter. U could fly to japan and buy a deadly guitar for that price.

although its like buyin a honda car your not sure about you will get your money back in 6 months if your not happy as doc mentioned

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

Lads here will tell you if it's a good price or not, but sure only you can decide whether you want it...

Im not into the whole vintage thing, so i'd sooner buy one that was only a couple of years old....but I guess the whole Gibson thing and vintage thing go hand in hand..so if you like it, go ahead

For that money, i'd probably get a Jap copy (edwards or tokai or whatever), and a nice amp, but different strokes..

I'd say you should go for it, or at least go for something. Tokai maybe?

    loooks lovely

You wouldnt believe it but thats the cheapest standard i can find anywhere... I know how good japanese guitars are myself being an advocate of Fender Japan but i just want to buy a guitar from the UK/ireland that wont be impossible to sell in a few years... Even if half the price would get me an Edwards LP custom, i'd prefer to make my money back on the gibson in a few years than lose a couple of hundred on an Edwards/tokai/ran/whatever. Im settled on gibson pretty much to be honest and the price isnt the issue... i have the money to spare so depreciation is more of a concern (well parents are paying half as its a gift for my 18th and they feel bad coz im on a break from the missus, they think im distraught over it haha)

Ih ****... just noticed an issue that may be concerning...

Seems like a decent job done though?? They fairly detailed pics.. looks like straight scarf joint snap glued up with a neck refin

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Still wouldn't touch it. Not for that price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Any cheaper gibson LP standards out there?? Thats the best i can find from a few hours searchin.. eBay arent really any cheaper and i'd prefer to buy from a dealer.. Might even get a cheap flight over to the UK if i see one i like just to see how it plays before parting with the cash.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yeah, I wouldn't touch that either tbh.

Would a decent copy not do it for you, freak? Tokai do make excellent instruments, and this is a real beauty. ;)

Nope not doin it... has to be cherry sunburst... the heritage burst is ick

Save yourself a few squids man and go for an Edwards - i mean, c'mon, its the same wood, same shape, put together the same way, same (or better) quality, who gives a fiddlers whats on the headstock, when its exactly the same in most other ways..?

I'd wager this plays as good as the Jimmy Page ones Gibson put out a while ago - and they cost a bloody fortune if I remember right

    Eww relic!!!
Aye, well it doesnt matter if you like relics or not, they've a good oul range, customs, standards, goldtops those fancy ones with all the binding...and these are Jap made guitars, quality stuff. For the price difference between one of those, and even a used Gibson, it'd be a pretty easy choice for me.

I think you should get a Gretsch... :p

if you're shallow enough to want the Gibson name on the headstock, then by all means go for it. broken headstock not an issue for me. The price isn't bad, and it does look nice.

but for 1500, you could do so, so, so much better than a used Gibson if you want a Les Paul. Really.

    gibsonkurzerundlangerhazb5.jpg
    swisscheese8je.jpg

The top pic is of a gibson LP standard neck joint (the top one)
The second one is of a gibson LP standard with weight relief holes.

I'm damned if i'd pay 1500 for a guitar with cheap heavy wood that needs weight relief holes, to me that's unnacceptable. 1500 quid and you get cheap wood, a japanese guitar at half the price uses better woods that don't need lightening. Sorry, but this pisses me off, and i'm not even going to go near the sloppy neck joint (formerly posted on the gibson website to show the difference in construction between the standard and historic series.

Go for Tokai/Edwards/Greco/Burny/whatever, but going for a gibson unless you need that name on the headstock, is just plain stupid.

you know electromatics are korean imports, right?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 936 ✭✭✭Beecher

Id vote nay. For that price you could get a new classic which wouldn't have a possible neck issue.

Even better though and what I would do if I didnt pretty much buy Ibanez's only these days. I would use the €1,500 to get a second hand Tokai/Edwards Les Paul, and a second hand Tokai/Edwards 335 style guitar and still have a few hundred change in my pocket. Since they are second hand if for any reason I wanted to sell them I shouldn't lose anything as they've already depreciated.

    LP classic for €1500?? Where?

    LP classic for €1500?? Where?

I could have sworn they used to be £1050 on GAK, seems to be £1150 (€1700) now.

classics have gone way up in price, i got mine from gak for £999 two years ago.

Quote for a Shamray LP, with mahogany neck and body, rosewood fretboard, AAA Maple top, Chernyshev pickups: US$1818.00

I'd see about putting an extra couple of hundred in and going the custom made route.

the problem with anything without the big G on it is resale, didn't someone try to sell a beautifull 70's tokai reborn on here a while back? took forever!!
i'd suggest herritage as the way to go,but once again they lose out on resale!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

If you keep your eye on eBay, you should get one. Could take a while, I was sniping for mine for a good while, but you can get them alright, for as little as a grand sometimes.

Yup that was mine. Fantastic guitar if a little on the heavy side. Highly recommend checking out some of the ealier models. A guy flew over from london for one day to buy the guitar and he loves it. Had a lot of collectors interested in it too. You're right though, if it doesnt have gibson on the headstock people are too stubborn to acknowledge a good guitar. Personally if you really want a les paul then I wouldnt be worried about resale value. Get a second hand tokai and even if you do decide to resell you shouldnt lose too much on it. These are made to the same spec as the old les pauls so none of that weight relief crap. One piece solid back, 2 piece carved maple top, bone nut etc

i was sorely tempted to buy that at the time but i'd just bought a guitar(can't even remember which one) and couldn't afford it,another one that got away!

    Explain how, please.

    Flight: €1000
Expenses in airport (food, etc): €30
Travel to & from Dublin & Tokyo airports: €60 min
    Accomodation: €120
Food & transport in Tokyo: €100
Cost of same guitar in Tokyo: €800 min

Total Time if you only stay 1 night: 38 hrs min + horrendous hassle.
    Total Expenses: €2110
    Money Saved: -€610

Other than that, it's a fantastic idea! Will you be by new financial advisor?

Futureman, if you are not going to post helpful comments, do not post at all. While jcoote's comments may not have been directly helpful, he had a fair point to make. Above all, it was a joke. If the OP or any other poster on this forum had a problem with jcoote's comments, they know the correct way to report it - with the report button report.gif

You know, it's far cheaper to fly to Osaka than Tokyo, and they've got some fantastic guitar shops there.

Reguardless of saving money or not, a trip to Japan should be on every single guitar enthusiast's to-do list.

F*ck me pink  !...i dont go for LP's but they are some smokin tops...esp the second one...

Actually, the likes of Gibson should be ashamed of themselves for not putting tops that that on their guitars.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

I'm not mad on the bling tops myself though... I much prefer something subtle like this

    DS00214054.jpg

You can just make out the "hand made" logo on the pickups. I love that symbol :D
