Warm ups

Ok so I've started training with a friend, which means I can start lifting a lot heavier. It also means I'm getting wicked doms and stiff muscles. I used to do a few minutes rowing before lifting, but I want to keep my cardio and lifting seperate for a while. What can I do to loosen up and get me ready for working out? (I know I should probably know this but I was never too bothered with warming up-I know, I know)

It depends on what exercises you are planning on doing, stretching is the most important. But before you start stretching you need to warm up, which can be anything really hell even jumping jacks, a few press ups, sit-ups, 5 minute jog. Try get your heart rate up for a while before hand.

I think it's important to do both. Particularly as it's very easy to overstretch cold. I usually just Warm-up for 5-10 mins, then stretch.
But OP, it's important to cool down which involves doing the same. This helps remove waste, such as lactic acid, which can be responsible for a bit of the pain.
Incidentally, I kinda like that tight, painy feeling you get after a High intensity work-out.

What I do to get the blood flowing is dynamic stretches. I just move the body parts around, get the blood circulating, do no static stretches until the end of a workout. I also give 5-10 minutes time at either end of a session, it's important for me.

Dave and aedh are nail on the head there. Dynamic is the way to go. Before a workout anyway. Nice site dave, btw.

I don't do much working out as such, but what sort of dynamic exercises do ye do for weightlifting? I can only relate to football in this sense so that's why I'm asking.

And can anyone explain to me the benefits of static post training rather than pre? I know it's the correct thing to do, but just need some reasoning.
