One of our cats has been doing it for a long time.

In fact, the house that my wife previously lived in had a push down handle on the front door and she could open that if it wasn't locked. We actually spotted her trying to open a neighbour's door a few times. :D

is it common for cats to have the ability to open doors by jumping up and grabbing the handle?

Last night my cat managed to open the living room door so he is learning!
