I realise that maybe you're just starting a thread to be discussed, but jeez man, Wikipedia!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Bale

He went without proper rest for prolonged periods, and placed himself on a crash diet that saw his weight dropping by a startling sixty pounds in a matter of months (see List of actors who gained or lost weight for a role).[20] He was compared to Robert DeNiro, whose alternate weight-gaining regimen saw him putting on fifty-five pounds for his role as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull.

Still fresh from The Machinist, it became necessary for Bale to bulk up to match the powerful physique of Batman. He was given a deadline of six months to do this. Bale recalled it as far from a simple accomplishment: “…when it actually came to building muscle, I was useless. I couldn’t do one push up the first day. All of the muscles were gone, so I had a real tough time rebuilding all of that.”[20] With the help of a personal trainer, Bale succeeded in meeting the deadline, gaining exactly one hundred pounds in six months. He then worked toward converting most of it into muscle.[24]

    Bale is an absolute legend.

If that's a direct quote from Wikipedia it's a prime example of how you shouldn't believe everything you read. You gain muscle or fat, you can't convert one into another.

But yes, Bale is an absolute legend :D

Bale is king, simple as. The guy has freaky control over his build.

Yes, these myths are the reason you get posters here saying- "I am really thin should I become overweight before I even think of lifting weights"

I heard the "stop doing weights and turning muscle into fat" thing too recently, from a FOAF who is captain of a football team. I think it might be a league of ireland team (I dont follow soccer, but have heard his name on the radio a few times)

No, you misunderstand. Apparently he just bulked his ass off, to basically give his emaciated body every opportunity to rebuild muscle. I think maybe he put on 100lb in total, but about 60 of which was muscle; 40 fat - and then went on a serious 'cut' about 6 weeks before filming. Also, I think the lines quoted in the above wikipedia sample were direct quotes from Bale himself, to be fair.

He is a Legend though. :)

I never noticed that the article said that. Pity, because it is well written otherwise.

The article references the "Bale succeeded in meeting the deadline, gaining exactly one hundred pounds in six months. He then worked toward converting most of it into muscle"

    to

I can't read it because of content filter here in work.

They also did a great job of setting locations and shoots to ensure that it was well into filming before any of scene where he would have his shirt off, to give him as much time as possible to get his build where they wanted it to be.

Well, a fat Matthew McConnaughy wouldn't earn as much as a well-built Matthew McConnaughy, in fairness. Good motivation.

Dont suppose anybody has a link to or knows the training/nutrition program that Christian Bale went through to get his body from how it was in The machinist to Batman Begins??

He really is dedicated to the roles he portrays, and fair play to him in alternating his weight so much..
I feel really skinny now considering i'm the same height as him (6'), yet weigh only around 150 lb:(

jesus Christian Bale is 31 years old

So what rough weight would he be in stone ?About 12-13 ?

What he did was impressive, but also pretty stupid. Going to the extreme of the machinist must have been really bad for his body, I mean I saw him in interview saying he had no energy to do anything that wasn't essential. Apparently it made him quite zen.

Then to go back up and become batman, while its a change most men would dream about, again I can't help thinking he must have put huge stress on his body.

Tbh, not sure if I should admire him more or less for it all!

Totally admire him, legend. Just highlighting the two extremes you can bring the human body to, but in a dangerous way, yes.

    His choice in the end.

With allextraordinary feats of endeavour, there comes a great risk. The first man to reach the South Pole would have put his body through worse, and it's hard to deny him admiration. Bale's not an explorer, but he puts more into his line of work, than any other actor there has been. Did you know, when he plays an American, he speaks with an American accent for the entire time it takes to shoot and promote the film, so as not to waver from the character.

He's not american?? I definitely admire the man, I just hope it doesn't become part of his schtick that he changes body shape drastically (or as drastically as the obvious two roles) cause he could damage his body over time and that would be a shame.

Well supposing he didn't lose anymore than 25 pounds after bulking up I would say 14 stone.

It doesn't matter. You need to find your own diet and routine that works for you, not what worked for Bale. ;)
