good spot, one of the other signals is Rte 2 but I'm only getting sound:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭Zaphod

With the last few weeks, the signal on 11159 has gone up 10-15% although the other TPs used by RTÉ on I903 are still weak enough. So a 90cm is fine for having a look.

The ones with audio and no video are in the 4:2:2 broadcast format which require a PCI card.

Anyone know why they use this satellite in the first place and will it be FTA for the foreseeable future?

Speaking of which, when did RTE own some of Intelsat?? http://www.rte.ie/about/ar2005/english/note11.html

    Hi, first post here.

Im in Wales and have been watching these RTE feeds on 34.5w for sometime now.

Actually it was first reported in mid October 06.

That certain transponder has been known to carry other things other than RTE One or Two which ive seen there.

Sports coverage, news gathering, and random nonsense like last night about how RTE was boasting about a new system with all network based content internally.

Theres also a RTE LDN HBR on that satellite which im guessing is thier London offices and uplink thats in 4:2:2, it often seen carrying BBC Two England.

They've used this sat and its predecessor since the era of Tara TV. They owned 0.086% of Intelsat until 2005, one of their small number of investments out in to other ventures. Or they may have got them cause they were a member of the cooperative Intelsat that existed pre privatisation.

It's not unknown for one company to buy shares in another company because they get their hands on detailed sets of accounts available only to shareholders and are entitled to privileged information regarding strategy / direction of the company. Basically you get to know about anything that has to be put to the shareholders even though this information is not publically known.

Rare to spend over a million notes on them for that purpose though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Spending other people's money comes easy to some people.:D

I think you have to have a certain percentage of shares before the above mentioned applies.
I'm speaking from limited knowledge so am open to correction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,120 ✭✭✭✭L1011

I've a feeling RTE were a member of Intelsat when it was a broadcaster cooperative and got those shares in exchange when it privatised in 2001.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 107 ✭✭jeffred

Has this changed to RTE 2?

I deleted it and when I rescanned today I only get RTE 2.

They are continually chopping and changing. They've even been carrying Reuters news feeds on it in the clear, despite them being encrypted on most other satellites.

You reminded me..... UTV were a shareholder in Astra since the early 80's... I think they "cashed in" in the late 1990's. At the time, Thames and TSW as well as UTV were major shareholders in Astra.

Thats nothing compaired to a certain commerical channel that has a Pint glass in the bottom right hand corner on Saturday's ive seen broadcasted over on 34.5w in the clear and regular standard MPEG-2 to boot, no fancy professional stuff that thier London offices are using.

Still 15w and the other satellites past 34.5w are more fun to watch for random feeds and stuff.

    Still nice to see RTE.

is rte 1 still on this sat?
also anyone else know what the other channels are that encoded in 422

& do you think I can receive the signal with a 1.2 metre from Madrid, Spain??

Having seen this thread, it gives me a small hope to be able to see RTE as I cannot put a 2m antenna on my property to get the SKY RTE channels. As a result, I'm thinking of giving up the idea of getting rte in spain, cancelling my sky subscription (seeing as I can't get the 2D channels)........or should I keep my hope up with what you mention in this thread?

    Any help gratefully received.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭Zaphod

Possible with a 1.2M but it's little or no use for viewing RTÉ. OK for news/sport uplinks and news/nuacht are carried regularly (and Jigs and Reels!) but nothing much else. They do leave BBC1/2 on for long periods FTA for some reason.

If you have space then camouflage is one option. Adventureglass manufacture fibreglass rocks which can cover large dishes.
    http://www.adventureglass.com/rocks1.htm

Clearsat used to manufacture customer parasol covers for large dishes but no longer seem to manfacture them. It shouldn't be particularly difficult to make a DIY version.

sorry for delaying in responding. Thanks a lot Zaphod for your feedback. Certainly while I don't know whether or not I'll buy such a camouflage cover for the satellite dish it's amazing to see that they actually exist.

Finally, to respond to your first paragraph, so you are saying that RTÉ is still shown (although with not so much programmes on offer) and getting BBC is possible. Is the transponder information provided earlier in this message thread still applicable?

Again thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated,

I did a Blind Search on Wednesday and got an RTE channel with a still picture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭remlap

That's been common recently, I feel sorry for the monitor the actual feed is using.

They had the same face / mug shot for days I guess it was a wind up maybe at RTE play out centre?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭remlap

Looks like the constant feed is gone now from 34.5w and I have seen the London feed active only once in a while.

27.5w might be the new home for RTE feeds me thinks one was reported today and its owned by Intelsat.

Last Sunday there were 3 TPs on 34.5W active plus 2 on 27.5W. It looked like they needed extra capacity for the elections coverage. But now it appears that they've abandoned 34W and moved entirely to 27W. Haven't seen any activity on 34W this weekend despite all the political comings and goings.

Can you list the frequencies please Zaphod on 27.5w for future reference?

    Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭Zaphod

    11553, V, 3720
    11542, V, 3720
    Both in 4:2:2.

For anyone who hasn't 27.5W locked in, there is an "Intelsat" labelled encrypted channel which is on 24/7 and is very strong to align your dish @ 11518, V, 5632

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭remlap

That transponder carries NBA TV Europe it was FTA for years up until recently it "Bissafied"

    Cheers for the settings mate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,733 ✭✭✭Zaphod

Additional TPs on 27.5W. 34.5W still blank.

Cavan vs Down currently FTA on 11071, V, 6110.

RTÉ2 coverage with commentary for Westmeath vs Longford 11071, V, 6111 in 4:2:2

Another couple of frequencies used for the election, from feedhunter googlegroups:

    11549, V, 3270 Longford Wmeath 4:2:0
    11103, V, 3720 Wexford 4:2:2

Thor @ 1°W also in use by RTE.

    Currently live:

11472 V 6111 ID: "DIGISAT RTE HBR" Horse Racing 4:2:2

11481 V 6111 ID: "DIGITAL SPACE" GAA (studio discussion) 4:2:0
(update: now showing still image of Semple Stadium)

    11508 V 6111 ID: "DLSW" - GAA (Donegal v Armagh at Ballybofey) 4:2:2
    11517 V 6111 ID: "DLSW"

The ID "DLSW" refers to "Donegal South-West". It would appear that the sat uplink van had been used to cover election counts over the weekend and they never changed the ID.

27.5w 11542 V 3720 is bouncing up and down not able to get a lock not sure if its the symbol rates changed or my dish just is not big enough and it cant lock it.

So is there anything currently on 34.5W ?
I got it set up on my motor , but the only thing i could get was a internet provider's TP.

Tried all the feed info from Lyngsat , with no joy.

Ireland’s National broadcaster, RTE, is purchasing two Newswift satellite antennas from Advent Communications. They will be added to the broadcaster’s already-owned Newswift equipment to increase the size of the satellite communications fleet. These new antennas are to be mounted on new radio communications vehicles.

This new order, finalized at the recent IBC exposition, is for two 1.2 meter Ku-band antenna systems with integrated RF and SSPA package. The Newswift antenna is a highly compact system with a specially shaped offset feed antenna made from carbon fibre—Lewisville, Texas

I903 at 34.5W has been a desert for many months since RTÉ left, apart from a few data carriers, but Spanish feeds have started appearing with the last few weeks. Today there were also 2 feeds for Digisat doing 'GAA Beo' coverage for TG4 and subsequent interviews for RTÉ. Digisat used to carry these mostly on 1W last year.

    New testcard as well.
