FatB sent an email around the college to say there was a fourm for students. I arrived 5 years ago this month. Still here waiting for my coke and hookers experience.

I was looking for something to do with history, can't remember what it was now, but up popped a boards.ie thread. I had and have never been on any other forum before, and until boards.ie didn't even go on the internet that much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,165 ✭✭✭DEmeant0r

Went to the first GalwayLan and there were mentions of it, well that's how I remember it anyways, been a member for nearly 6 years.

How long before you started collecting them? :p

Pretty much the same as the OP, had been Googling for something (can't for the life of me remember what, musn't have been too important) and stumbled upon this place.

I actually happened upon a UCD boards beers in the porterhouse one night and they seemed like a nice bunch of people so I thought I'd go see what this forum they were all part of was like!

Googled for guitar pedals or something similar and found it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

humbert, you're just a blow in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

One of the owners of boards is a regular contributer to one of Pigheads favourite websites, (www.nakeddancingmidgetlesbians.com) and he recommended boards.ie to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

I Googled for something or other (can't remember what), stumbled across boards.ie and somehow I ended up with yet another vice. But it does help pass time that would otherwise be boring - especially in work.

Damn you Pighead - I actually tried that link! I should have known better....................

One evening I was walking home drunk from the pub and somebody struck me from behind... when I regained consciousness I found myself here.

A friend recommened it in college. I lurked for about six months on and off before deciding to join up. Of course, it was much smaller back then and having over 1000 posts was scary..

a sibling was delighting in the fact that he could argue with people on the internet in a political forum around the time of the Iraq war and told me to have a look.

    I did.

Indirectly if it hadn't been for boards I would probably have emigrated.

    You b**tards :)

yep i went searching too, was for sky codes. it's one of the best sites out there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,664 ✭✭✭rogue-entity

Someone once told me about the site when I asked them where I could get a free domain name (not having a credit card to pay for one normally), that was back when this place was using UBB. I often found the site again and again when googling for something. I joined in 2005 when I got internet access in the house, and the rest is public knowledge now.

    Fantastic site, when it works.

One boring summer I was forced into joining by Daddio (mod of Jazz and/or Blues) and the infamous, often hated, rarely appreciated, now-banned member Ratboy (yes he is a real person, and isnt quite as trollish in real life). Turned out to be a good time killer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,509 ✭✭✭✭randylonghorn

Also googling for something or other, can't remember what ... just goes to show how much random stuff must pop up somewhere on boards, and is then picked up. A kind of a surreal alternate universe, a la Terry Pratchett!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,564 ✭✭✭✭whiskeyman

    interesting.... I can't remember!
Anyway of finding out what your first ever post was?
    That'll probably remind me then...

I only found it through google! Although when i mentioned it to my friends they said stay away from boards.ie there are plenty of other boards that you get genuine answers without being grudged.
I did a bit of research and found out that a lot of college students in the south are posting on uk boards!
Only trying uk boards about two weeks now and i have to say irish people do hold their values high and when you try to debate it,you get grudged!

I like a good ole debate, but when people get 'sour' over the person who started the thread rather than the thread itself,it tends to be looked over.

Maybe i should start this as a thread....

    I can't remember. I do know I lurked a bit though.

I seen a guy in the place i worked using boards... Ever since that my whole life has fallen appart, I have been unable to leave my job. My family all hate me and I haven't had a drink in hours :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,669 ✭✭✭mukki

i used to read the Usenet news groups (through Google), there was a board for computer problems there, and i used to try and help the guys out

then i found the Irish newsgroups and realized i could help Irish people with their computer problems instead, i just preferred to try to help out Irish people

one day a guy posted about his problem and said "the lads on boards.ie weren't able to help him either", so i was delighted to find yet another place where the helpful computer geeks needed a hand,

wasn't long before i realized that i could find out stuff from experts in other areas (like the mustard forum), so I gave up on Usenet pretty soon after

I was looking up porn on the internet and oddly enough found myself on boards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I was looking up phones and found a thread from boards with my details on it, saying 'this guy emailed me to recommend this guy to me, and he turned out to be a scammer'. Me being the recommender in innocence, not the scammer!

Was a bit surprised, but then joined up after flicking through the website.

I moved to England at the end of 2004, by early 2006, I had started a new job and had time to reflect on how much I really missed the Irish perspective on life in general.

So I searched Google for Irish forums. I found one or two Irish emigrant forums but that wasn't what I wanted...then I discovered boards.ie. Now I'm talkin' :D

I discovered Boards by being very nosey and reading over the shoulder of some ex work colleagues a few years ago (who I have since seen at Boards Beers). I browsed for a couple of weeks to see what all the fuss was about then eventually signed up. I think at one stage pretty much everyone in my work place was posting here :)
