I did the two year restriction thing the year it came in. My restrictors spent most of their life sewn onto the bike jacket I was wearing. Dangerous things, not being able to overtake anything, and power tailing off at 65mph! Not that I'd recommend that type of thing though, it being illegal and all that.

i apologise for my ignorance but, how is that??? how do they actually work?
is there any papers proving that the bike is restricted , in case i get stopped by the garda??? it would be really nice if you could shed some light on to this subject.

Ok, without going into too much detail, there are several ways to restrict a bike. Two ways in particular are used:
    1) ECU restriction, where the manufacturer developes a specific ECU Fuel map so the bike just doesnt get the power
    2) Washers that restrict the airflow across the fuel bowl. Less airflow = less air/fuel mixture = less power.

Both the ECU can be replaced with a "proper" fuel map = full power and the washers can be removed (or fall out ;););) from the enclosed space) resulting in full air flow across the fuel bowl = full power.

"factory restricted" bikes are ones that leave the manufacturer with a known ECU code/Frame number or Washers/Frame number so insurers can simply ring up the manufacturer with the frame number (which you supply to them) and they confirm that yes it is "factory restricted".

No paperwork in my case anyway.

"Dealer restricted" are aftermarket restrictions placed onto a normally full power bike in order for the rider to comply with the licencing arrangements (max 25kw and .16kw/kg).

Generally insurance companies do not take account of the Dealer restricted bikes for lower insurance groupings/loadings, and they may or may not take Factory restriction into account.

In the event of a claim against you, the insurance company is entitled to examine the bike for evidence that you may not be complying with the insurance provisions (for example if a set of 4 washers happened to be found in a neat pile beside the bike, or if the ECU serial number did not correspond to the one registered to that bike by the manufacturer).
In such a case, they would honour claims against you, but they would probably seek costs for any of these costs in a civil case against you (and would probably win).

There is plenty of discussion about these topics here on this site and on www.IrishBikerForum.com and www.Biker.ie amongst others.

This question might shock a few but do all bikes in Ireland need to be resticted to 33BHP or is it only for the first 2 years?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 1,863 Mod ✭✭✭✭Slaanesh

When you get your full license you are restricted to 33BHP for the first 2 years.
Nought to do with the bike, just licensing and also if you want cheaper insurance, meaning when you get older, build up NCB and gain immaculate riding wisom when turning 25.

Or in my case they send you a full 10 year unrestricted.

So basically, no restrictions whatsoever once you've done the 2 years. Correct?

In France, not only do you have to restrict the bike to 33BHP for the first 2 years but all bikes over 100BHP must be restricted to 100BHP max!

Nope, nothing like that.. The Gardai can't even verify the bhp of your bike for the two year purgatory after getting your license, so policing a 100bhp restriction for everyone would be pretty much impossible for them.. It would also prove too costly for the manufacturers to provide restricted models for the small Irish market (with the steering on the left hand side :D )

Still a red (under all that muck, even though I foolishly washed and waxed it last week) '03 VFR 800. Being red, she reminds me of that character from Buffy, so I christened her Willow. Being mucky, she reminds me of the hot lez bean action Willow used to engage in. Which explains why I generally wobble down the road at 20 km/h.

Great bike, I love it, as an alround bike you can't go far wrong. Upgraded from a 1150GS. Great protection from the weather considering there's no fairing. Also, I commute through rush hour traffic with panniers on without major difficulity. Good luck!

Do you have the knobbley tires or the road ones?

    MrP

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,397 ✭✭✭Paparazzo

I got road tyres. Metzeler tourances. Obviously road tyres give better grip, but the main reason i got them was that the off roas ones like in the picture last about 2000km, but the tourances last about 15,000km.

Want to replace the front end of my SV with a Gixxer one. I love the black/gold upsidedown forks with the radial brakes.
