Pain in the Knee

Hey hope someone can help me,

Maybe I'm just not made for running but since January I've been trying to shed a few pounds. I've started running outside with the intention of training for the Dublin City Marathon at the end of the year.

The first two weeks of January were fine until I started to get a pain just on the outside of my knee, only my left knee. I asked my physio about this but she reckoned I just wasn't made for running and I should quit running and try swimming or something with less impact. I really enjoyed the running and don't get the same feeling of acomplishment when I swim, do I have to give up running?

Your physio is an idiot! I stand by that....if she said what you say she said. Get a good physio to look you over. Your self diagnosis is just too vague to be any use.

    Where do you live?

I have to agree with Footfax on this. Such a terse diagnosis is of no help at all. What if you get a shoulder pain from swimming (as i used to from an old rotator cuff injury) will he tell you you're not made for physical exercise, and to sit at a couch watching T.V.?
Your physio is either an idiot, or lazy, or both. Get a second opinion, and if it turns out that your running days are behind you (which would be surprising indeed) then find out why!

I have the very same problem as the OP. It doesn't get swollen. Just very very sore. To the point where I have to stop running for a few days. Keep meaning to get to a physio but haven't got round to it yet.

Go to your doctor, you probably have cartilage damage. Some anti inflammatory tablets will work wonders.

That's ludacris, unprofessional and inconsiderate. I would have refused to pay a physio if that's the "professional" diagnosis. Some people take what doctors say as Gospel, and for th emost part thats a good thing, but for a patient to hear a physio telling them that they will never be a good runner cos genetically they aren't good enough, which is essentially what she said, is a ridiculous.

What if someones current max was to dead 100lbs, and their personal trainer tells them that that's all their body can ever lift cos they aren't made to lift more, that'd be a serious morale crusher.

Name and shame this (what more can u expect from a...)..... woman. ;) jk

I've treated many a knee problem successfully in my time, but it would be impossible to provide you with a diagnosis over the net. That said, if you could pm they answers to these questions I may be able to offer some advice and temporary relief.
    • How would you describe the type of pain in your knee? Is it sharp or dull?
    • Is it always there or only on impact?
    • Does it get better in hot or cold envirments?
    • Have you noticed anything that esaes the pain?
    • Was it precipitated by a fal or injury?
    • Is there any other areas of pain or discomfort on you body?

I forgot to explain earlier, I'm a qualified acupuncturist specialising in sports injuries, knee problems and sciatica. I'm also a fitness instructor so I'm familiar with many of the injuries sustained through training. Hope I can be of some help.

hi i hope someone can help, or if not at least keep me sane!!

i had a crash in Aug, 18yr old boy racer:mad: drove into the back of me car on main rood as he hadnt seen me stopped waiting to turn right, bright spark that he was and everything, drove his death trap with two bald tyres on the front and 2 brand new ones on the back:confused:

Anyway, i suffered what my doctor says is sprained back sprained neck and my phsio also said i "shunted my pelvis", but that was in August, i have had to teach myself how to get out of chairs, how to get out of bed on my own, and how to get dressed. But 5 months on i am still no nearer to leading a normal life,

i religiously do my exercises 3 times a day, i sit on a ball for 5 minutes to strengthen core muscles, lie on my belly and try and raise my leg and arm to try and reach my toes, neck and shoulder rolls, making a c shape with my back while sitting on my ball - also on ball, hands together and behind and try to raise them up and i round it of with crossing my arms so my hands are on either shoulder and twisting from left to right.

problem is i am still on 2 difene 50, and shed load of tylex every day, i got a christmas present from my doctor of a perscription of diazepan so i had some resemblance of normality for a few days and was able to endure the 1 hour drive to my parents,

i dont really have a question, but i am so upset in myself for not being able to do anything, i feel like i am failing as a person, a wife and mother, for gods sake i have to get my five year old to load the washing machine as i cant go down on my hunches for more than a couple of seconds otherwise i freeze in that position,

I realised over christmas that since august i have improved - but that there was no way i could go back to my job anytime soon, as i couldnt even sit out the christmas dinner in one go without having to get up and stretch, so if i cant sit at a computer all day long the only other thing i could do would be make tea as i can now lift my kettle when it is full, and i dont really think of myself as the next Mrs Doyle,

anyway, as everyone on this thread was talking about phsios and exercise and such does anyone have anything they want to suggest, or a different thread they want to throw me onto that might be more appropriate!!

Serious injuries like that take time to recover from. Your making progress, even though you may find it slow - it is STILL an improvement, and as long as you continue to follow the medical advice you have been provided with and give due diligence and attention to your exercises I have no doubt you will continue to improve at a steady rate and regain your full quality of life.

The fact is no one, including medically qualified people like me should be advising you over an internet forum. We don’t have a full medical history to work from nor independent verification e.g. first hand palpitation of the area. As such it would be most irresponsible for us to offer any advice other than our heartfelt support, which you most assuredly have.

At the end of the day, the advice you have been given by the qualified professionals who are directly treating you is working. The best advice anyone here can give is that you keep it up. Don't lose faith, it may take time, but I have no doubt you will achieve a full recovery. Your children will thank you when they're older for looking after your health now and being responsible with your treatment plan, rather than rushing things and risking greater damage.

If you do have any questions or concerns regarding alternate or complimentary therapies that could aid in accelerating your recovery please contact your primary care physician to discuss your options and if they would be appropriate.

I wish you all the best with your recovery.

your last physio was most definetly an idiot ( i am also a physio). Its unlikely to be cartilage problem and is most likely ilio-tibial band syndrome ( See links below). But it does need to be checked out and diagnosed for sure and you need proper advice and rehab. There are previous treads looking for good physios that you can go to
