I was wondering if someone could advise me on a good routine for building up my leg muscles as I've ruptured my ACL in my left knee and was advised to bulk up the muscles around it before I get it operated on, sometime in mid April.

Anyone been through this before and have a good routine it would be much appreciated.

Did the people who told you to bulk up the muscles around the knee not give you any advice on exercises to do?

If the ACL is really bad and it sounds like it is - suggesting exercises is hard. Try and get some advice off someone who has examined you and your ruptured acl and ask them what they reckon.

    Best of luck mate.

Well I did my cruciate twice and I have never been told to bulk up the muscles around it before an op. To be honest rembering the pain of it I don't know what kind of exercises I could do that would build up any muscle. Your legs not going to be the most flexible nor is it going to withstand much weight so I can't really see how your going to do this.

That said, you have me interested now.

Injury happened about 6 months ago, it was diagnosed as cartilege damage and I was given excercises to do to try and get it going again, exercises were going great but once I got back running again I started falling over any time I took a sharpe bend or even if I turned sideways too quickly while walking, so went to another physio, who straight away referred me to a consultant, Mr. Ray Moran, he had a look at it and said he's 90% certain its ruptured and sent me for an MRI on it, awaiting the results, but he told me to start work on it straight away and start bulking it up because the recovery rate is much higher + quicker the more muscle mass that is around the knee.

Yeah heard that too, was told by a physio friend he did Padraig Harringtons knee a couple of years ago, would have to imagine he's one of the best if thats the case

Testing for ACL rupture is not difficult.....repairing and rehab is a nightmare. Ring Ray Moran's office and ask for the physio he deals with and get an appt with them. They will know what to show you to do.

Ray Moran is brilliant, he did my knee twice. Once was almost a complete reconstruction (the aul robo kop brace for 8 weeks), the second time was a much more straight forward cruciate tear. He is actually Kevin Morans brother and is the top knee person in the country. If your looking for a good knee psyhio I can highly recommend Spillane who at the time I was going to him was in clondalkin swimming pool. No idea if he is still there. He is one of the guys that Moran uses and vice versa.
