    Be the Best Around!

March 10th (March 11th Juniors), 2007 UCD Sports Hall.

This promises to be quite simply the most rocking submission tournament we've ever held!

    Weight classes:
    62Kg
    68Kg
    75Kg
    83Kg
    92Kg
    Open

New "Skill" divisions: Novice; Intermediate; Advanced

Novice: Recommended for all those under 8 months or first competition.

Intermediate: If you've won or placed in a previous Sub Championship Ireland event at 6 months or below (beginner level) you will be placed in Intermediate. Going forward, if you win or place at Novice Level you move up to Intermediate.

Advanced: If you've won or placed in a previous Sub Championship Ireland event at 6 months plus (beginner/intermediate level) you will be placed in Advanced. Going forward, if you win or place twice at Intermediate Level you move up to Advanced.

You may enter into a level higher than that you've 'qualified' for if you've never competed before. For example if you're a purple belt (or t-shirt!) who has just moved to Ireland you can go straight into Advanced. Once you compete at one level you cannot go down a level at future competitions.

We feel over time this will make competitions more evenly matched and exciting.

If you've any questions please post them here. We'll have entry forms up by the end of the week hopefully.

In the meantime, this video should get you pumped for training!

"But you couldn't leave well enough alone, could ya?" You are Johnny. You have a strong and dominating nature that makes it easy for people to want to follow you. But you don't always use your influence for good, and at times you force your petty problems onto your friends (who will do just about anything you say). You usually know what the right thing to do is, but you don't always care. You are agile, capable, and very masculine -- and most likely extremely attractive -- but your over-developed sense of revenge hints at a hidden insecurity. Some advice? Try to put your looks and popularity toward something worthwhile for a change. Quit trying so hard to be a bad ass, you already are one. So just act natural. And don't let the little dweebs get you down.

    Which Cobra Kai are you?

This sounds like a super tournament. For the record

"Come on, come on, make a move!" You are Dutch. Not many good things can be said about a prick like you except that you're extremely loyal to your friends. This most likely indicates that you had a bad childhood and/or were abandoned by one or both parents. Intelligent people should feel sorry for you, but most people are just plain terrified. You are malicious, violent, and impatient, so you make either a tremendous ally or a frightening enemy. Some advice? Hmmm. You could try laughing more (out of joy, not spite). Maybe get yourself laid.

"But Sensei, I can beat this guy." You are Bobby. Though physically tough, you are a kind and sensitive person stuck in the midst of a pack of wolves. However, your desire to fit in and impress people often causes you to do things you regret immediately. This duality provokes fits of explosive rage that you have a hard time controlling. Nevertheless, your sweet and soft nature attracks people to you, especially the ladies. Some advice? Learn to channel your anger in a healthy way, and you will have the world at your feet. And stay away from those bully types. They're cramping your style.

Damn - don't want to be the sensitive guy a tthis event!

    Colm a quick question,

a friend of mine competed before in - 6 mnth comp but never plced and has been training off and on (more off) for about 1yr 6mnth. Which division would he be eligable for? Novice(for -8mnths as u stated)? Intermediate?

There Maybe an obvious answer but just need confirmation as he has no access to a computer. He's trying to get back into it. Thanx in advance.

Consider the ethos more than any hard and fast rule. And this isn't an official line until I discuss it with the competition committee.

The idea behind the Novice section is to give people who either don't train that often, haven't been training very long, or aren't that good overall to have a chance to compete. I imagine that someone shouldn't compete in a Novice division more than twice really.

Intermediate should hold most of the competitors, and should ideally hold the journeymen of the sub wrestling world. Those guys who are good but not superstars.

Ideally, the Advanced should hold the highest levels.

Short answer: We presume everyone who competes wants to compete, and doesn't just want a medal. So we presume people are honest in their amount of training, experience and skill level.

There will be bugs in this system, but with support it will be a much better system. It's loosely modelled off the Irish amateur rowing system.

We've to redesign the entry forms to better accomodate these changes and gray areas.

Thanks for your question. If anyone else has one please let me know.

    Information for Junior Events:

    Age Limitations
If you are 15 years old or younger on 01/01/2007 you may enter Junior Sub Championship Ireland events for the entire calendar year (despite the official season running from Sept-May/Jun).

However, if you compete at adult level in any national or international competition (which includes BJJ/Jacket Sub Wrestling) you are ineligible to compete as a junior from that point onwards.

For the purposes of backward qualification: If you have competed in any Sub Championship Ireland events in 2006 at junior level only but have competed in another event at adult level you may still compete as a Junior in 2007.

Competition is 5 weeks from Saturday, so put down the bagel and start squatting!

Best of luck to all competitors!

What kind of rampant communist would eat bagels?

I for one am making the commitment to get to 83kg, I may need to amputate.

That or I'm going to be the most dehydrated guy in sub 92kg.

Look at it this way, without Judo Mick - anyone could win.

    Now for some weights.

3 predictions for this event. The Shane will be:

    1. 83kg
    2. Ripped
    3. Victorious

Are there going to be opens in all 3 skill divisions? Will it be straight knock out or 2nd chances?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

This is a Round Robin tournament, like all Sub Championship Ireland events to date.

btw if anyone knows of other clubs who mightn't have a member who posts here, or posts on another forum, can they pass on notification of this event? Obviously the more people we have competing, the richer a tournament for everyone.

Oh, and slightly OT, but if anyone doubts the stance taken by us at the Dublin Open, here's further proof we were right - Nothing Beats Rock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Lovin' the "Which Cobra Kai are you?" thing. :D

Colm....could a muppet like me who has basically no experience, but is up for it, go in for the novice level? Or would that just be karate kid v's cobra kai stupid?

One way or the other, I'll probably head along to this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Nothingcompares

I'm talking about the Open. Is there an Open Weight category in all 3 skill divisions or is the Open an open weight and open skill category so there is only 1. Either way, is it a round robin like the other categories. Sorry for drawing this out I just want to be sure

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

There was only one open category at the last two. All weight classes all experience levels in one.

    Khannie,
With basically no experience, I'd advise against going into it. Not only would it perhaps be dangerous, but from running tournaments before, I'm fairly sure that rules stipulate you must be active in an appropriate discipline ie.Judo, wrestling, bjj. afaik you do thai? It would also be a bad precedent to set if just any randomer walked into a tournament and said "giz a go". You might win but the next guy who trys it might get hurt.

how about you start training now khannie? a month of two time a week and you'll be ok to enter. you won't win but you won't get broken in half either.

    On the "Open"

Open weight refers to +92Kg, and is not an absolute division.

There wasn't an absoluto at the Dublin Open, only at the Nationals.

Khannie, you can still purchase a t-shirt and brag about competing, which is the only reason people do it anyway. :D

    Now yer talkin' ;)

NothingCompares: That's not a bad idea. I planned on starting BJJ some time soon anyway. Maybe now's the time. I haven't trained (at all) in around 3 weeks though (new baby.... jesus, my poor tired body).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,923 ✭✭✭Nothingcompares

Where are you situated? North county dublin? If you can make your way to Baldoyle (SBG Northside) or Glasnevin (KO Martial Arts) you'll be able to start straight away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 235 ✭✭The Shane

That said there are no pesky kids around on the day so an impromptu absoluto is on the cards, numbers and time permitting.

I love the comedy. Who could forget Tim Murphy vs John Donnelly?

I went on a junk food bender the other day, I misninterpreted a sign from jesus..... 83kg is far away.

Khannie, some training with subs is necessary. Just to know when you're caught. If you get the training in between now and then though, competition is the absolute best gauge of where you are and what you have learned. I entered my first after only a little training and head squeezed my way into contention.

All of them. If they arrive some other day they won't be able to compete...

I crack me up. I'd say this will be as big as the NSC in May last year, since everyone has good notice of it. I'm looking forward to this now, K.O. should have a few in both the junior and senior sections this time out. The squats start Tuesday!:D

    Major Pimpage Time!

Just 3 weeks to the All Valley Submission Tournament.

To those who are thinking of not competing, just remember the hassle LaRusso went through when he said he wasn't competing in the All Valley. In the end, he competed and won, so why put yourself through that trauma and get those entries in!

If you're an adult competidor, please feel free to watch the Juniors on Sunday, it's so damn exciting and inspiring it's unreal. And these kids train damn hard for competition so they're psyched for action on the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

    Continued Pimpage Alert

2 weeks to the ALL VALLEY SUBMISSION TOURNAMENT!

Remember, entries received before March 1st (that's this Thursday) receive a €5 discount on entry fee (normally €25). If you email your entry to info [at] spartanmma [dot] com before Thursday you are entitled to your discount, even if you just pay on the day.

Two weeks to go, it's definitely time to stop having that one Mars bar or skip training in favour of Lost.

    Oooh-Rah!

Just looked at the scales, saw 79, looked at a muffin, looked back at the scales, looked at the 75kg category, back at the muffin, then the scales again, then put the muffin back in the press. No guarantees it will stay there, but I would certainly hope to be 74.99kgs again in two weeks.

I just emailed in my entry (intermediate 83). I'm in the same region of weight as roper but like rock, muffin wins everytime.

    Hey all,

Thanks to everyone who's registered so far, particularly all the novices, I know how nerve racking entering your first comp can be. Hopefully the new "skill" structure will allow for more evenly matched divisions at all levels and weights.

Just got the t-shirts today, man I nearly wee'd myself, it's like living your childhood again.

Since I'm so exciting anyone who sends in their application before next Friday can compete for €20 (no late fee)¡

Anyone going to Redz on Sunday who's an official let me know and I can bring your t-shirt. You're going to love 'em!

If I could upload an image I would (sometimes I'm technically inept) but they're black with "COMPETIDOR" on the front and a logo on the back similar to the ref's t-shirts in The Karate Kid but with "SUBMISSION" instead of "KARATE".

I've no kids sizes but I'm sure an adult small would suit you. Just let me know and I'll hold one for Sunday for you.

    whats the weigh in time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Weigh ins 10am. All going well Rules meeting at 11am followed by the competition straight after.

You can weigh in as often as you'd like before weigh ins close to make weight. If you're heavy you'll be moved up to the next weight category. Remember, it's Under 68Kg, Under 75Kg, etc.

Actually can I have all refs there at 10.30 for a ref's meeting so we can make sure we're all singing off the same hymn sheet with regards gray rules?

Best of luck to all those competing, particularly all the novices who are entering! Remember the original All Valley was Daniel LaRusso's first tournament and he won, even beating Johnny from Cobra Kai!
