Don't get me wrong but...

...out of curiosity, what do you think happens us when we die?..

Do you think we enter a nothingness that we have no power over or do you think we feel something that is unimaginable in this life?

I guess what i'm asking is what do you think happens when our time is up?...

Just something i've thought about as noone seems to know; and probably will never know unless someone comes back. we're still waiting for you messiah..

And i don't want this to necessarily turn into a religious discussion.

i'm just wondering what people think will happen to them..

    Serious question.

When I die I become worm food or a science experiement. Thats it. No soul, no angels will bring me to heaven. No hell if santa thought I was bold at christmas. A dead body rotting in the ground or getting cut up by some medical students in a lab. That is "life" after death fo me.

Once electrical activity in the brain ceases permanently there is no way for your consciousness to continue. What you think of as your 'self' doesn't exist any more and your body decays.

If there was a process involving consciousness moving onto another place then it would be an observable act.

Ruu, i knew we turned yellow after death but for fs!

what do you guys really think or do you think anything about it? i know it's hard to think about but surely we all have some sort of opinion?..

If our universe is billions of years old then I cant see our short time here being for nothing. We'll eventually come back as something or someone else. God bless them Buddists lol

Of course the Buddist could just be as right as the guys who thought up the Matrix.

Or we're all destined for wormfood.

Only advice ill give is dont get cremated as in the future some TV show like Time Team 4500AD might re-incarnate you with DNA from your bones!

If you get cremated you can have the carbon extracted and turned into a diamond... that's pretty cool.

Imagine having your dead wife turned into a diamond for an engagement ring for a new wife.

I'm sure she'd just love that.

We die and that's it, no heaven, no hell. It's difficult to imagine sometimes, but the easiest way to put it is that it's like before you were born, you're nothing.

Great to see so many people thinking along the same lines as myself!

    Wormfood ftw!

i think we end and that is it. nothingness i know its hard to comprehend but there is such a thing nothingness. we cese to exist and there is nothing

i would like to think we ascend to a higher plane of existence but religion has corrupted that idea for me

    Reincarnation

Hopefully something higher but it's more of a hope rather then a firm belief.

I hate the idea of simply ceasing to exist, but at least, like before you were born, it's not like you're going to be around to wallow in 'nothingless'...you just won't be there. Horrible idea though.

I hope there's a heaven. I like the idea of reincarnation too though.....anything but "nothing" :(

I wonder how many people would hope that there's nothing instead of something...

I think just about the only thing anyone can say for sure is that we honestly have no idea.

I've studied all sorts of religious texts and doctrines at one stage or another, the Torah, the Hebrew Oral traditions, the various versions of the old and new testaments, the Quran, the Tao te Ching, sutras of the Buddhists, the Bhagavadgiitaa, even animist beliefs of people in third world countries and what most people would call "witchcraft" and "sorcery", to use blanket terms.

Now while I'd never claim to be an expert in any of them, the message I get from them is that there is something, and its largely dependent on our own thoughts and actions to determine our own fates in the hereafter.

Of course theres a decent possibility that they are all cracked efforts to deal with the reality of death that got warped into means to exert influence over other people...

For myself, my thinking on it is that earth was once a ball of mud rolling around space, lifeless, and then from that mud sprang life. How and why that mud jumped up and started building McDonalds outlets we just don't know. This is a fact.

Its the same mud as is all around us even today, and when we die, our bodies will return to that mud. The animating force that makes us alive goes somewhere, whether dissipating into the atmosphere or somewhere else, but it doesn't just cease to be.

So while we may not be aware of it, we'll all be around forever in one form or another. Then again we may well be aware of it in some sense or another. The jury is still out on that one. Thats not all of what I believe, but its a good portion of it... If you want to look at the end of life, look for its beginnings.

I find it quite depressing that so many of you believe that there's nothing afterwards, that we just become worm food. You can go on about electrical energy ceasing in your body, signalling the end of your conciousness, but what about your soul? A quick disclaimer, I'm not in the least bit religious. I haven't been to mass of my own free will in many years. I am a scientist and firmly believe in Evolution and all that.

But I still believe in a soul. For me, it is the essence of your being. It is different to your conciousness. Your soul makes you who you are. It gives you humanity and compassion and all those things. I think it has to go somewhere after death. I couldn't handle the idea of there being nothing after life. What would be the point in life then? I believe that, after death, your soul goes to a nice place. Not necessarily Heaven, or somewhere with God, but just a happy place, where you don't have a phsyical form, but where you are happy and at peace. I don't know about Hell though, I guess I don't believe in it.

But I have to believe that there's something after death. Life seems pointless enough as it is.

Without meaning to sound too rude, wheres the science in the 'soul'?

I never said that there was any. At least, as far as I know, there is no scientific basis for it. My point was that I'm a scientist, but I believe in souls, not I'm a scientist so I believe in souls.
